Impairments due to tooth loss and prosthetic expectations in patients from an urban area and a rural area in Sweden. A qualitative study.

Objectives: To explore impairments due to tooth loss and expectations of prosthetic replacements in an urban group and a rural group of patients in Sweden.

Material And Methods: Semi-structured interviews were performed on 35 partially edentulous patients from prosthodontic specialist clinics located in an urban area and a rural area in Sweden. The interviews focused on impairments due to tooth loss and expectations of prosthetic restorations.

Patient-generated aspects in oral rehabilitation decision making. II. Comparison of an individual systematic interview method and the oral health impact profile.

Purpose: The effect of impaired oral functions is best described by the patient, and a shift toward a patient-oriented decision-making process in oral rehabilitation is evident. The Oral Health Impact Profile-49 (OHIP-49) questionnaire has been the most commonly used method to measure oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in dentistry. An individualized method, the Schedule for the Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life-Direct Weighing (SEIQoL-DW), has proven to fulfill most of the criteria for a method to assist in the decision-making process.

'Inadequate' dietary habits and mastication in elderly men.

Objective: The aim of this study was to re-evaluate data about oral status, mastication and nutrition in elderly men in Malmö, Sweden, recorded in 1985-1987, to assess associations between inadequate dietary habits, oral conditions and masticatory function.

Materials And Methods: Four hundred and eighty-one men, aged 67-68, participated in a comprehensive health examination, including tooth and denture status and masticatory tests. A separate study of dietary habits and nutritional status was made.

Specialisation and specialist education in prosthetic dentistry in Europe.

This presentation reports on the results of a meeting of prosthodontists from selected European countries. The aim of the meeting was to analyse and promote specialisation and specialist education in Prosthetic Dentistry in Europe. Representatives for Europe were selected from the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA) board, the Education and Research Committee of International College of Prosthodontists (ICP), countries with a legally recognised speciality, countries without a recognised speciality but organised training programmes and countries with neither of these situations.

Indications for removable partial dentures: a literature review.

Purpose: The purpose of this report was to evaluate indications for the use of removable partial dentures based on a comprehensive literature review.

Materials And Methods: Using a model similar to a Delphi process, the literature relating to the indications and contraindications for the prescription of removable partial dentures was discussed by seven experienced educators in a 2.5-day workshop.

The masticatory handicap of wearing removable dentures in elderly men.

Objective: This study aimed at describing the masticatory handicap of wearing removable dentures measured by some masticatory tests and the intake of hard and soft foods.

Materials And Methods: The subjects were participants in a comprehensive health examination of 67-68-year-old men living in Malmö, Sweden. Four hundred eighty-three men took part in a clinical oral examination which recorded the number of teeth and removable dentures.

A prospective randomized clinical study comparing implant-supported fixed prostheses and overdentures in the edentulous mandible: prosthodontic production time and costs.

Purpose: This work compared implant-supported fixed prostheses and overdentures in the edentulous mandible in a randomized prospective study of treatment results, clinical working hours, laboratory working hours, and laboratory costs including materials.

Materials And Methods: Seventeen subjects agreed to participate. Three standard Brånemark implants were placed between the mental foramina in each patient.

The combination syndrome: a literature review.

Although combination syndrome is recognized by many clinicians, documented observations seem to be rare. The aim of this article was to critically review the literature regarding combination syndrome to evaluate the evidence for this concept. A search of the dental literature with Medline/PubMed through July 2002, focusing on the combination syndrome and related features, was undertaken and combined with a hand search of older references and textbooks on removable prosthodontics.

Removable partial denture design: a need to focus on hygienic principles?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to critically analyze important hygienic/secondary prophylactic and biomechanical aspects of removable partial denture (RPD) design.

Materials And Methods: The literature related to traditional biomechanical design and open/hygienic design of RPDs was discussed by the authors at a 2.5-day workshop.
