To evaluate the usefulness of the Phalen test and the Tinel sign in the prognosis and the impact on quality of life in the clinical course of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome undergoing surgical treatment through the traditional open approach.  The present is a cohort study on prognosis. We included 115 patients with high probability of receiving a clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome with indication for surgical treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study investigated anatomical variations in 115 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome who underwent traditional open release surgery, confirming diagnoses with electroneuromyography and ultrasound.
  • - The study found a high prevalence of anatomical variations, with 63.5% of patients showing variations either within or outside the carpal tunnel, particularly noting a 57.4% occurrence of the carpal transverse muscle.
  • - The research highlighted that finding extra-carpal variations, like the transverse carpal muscle, may signal the presence of more complex intra-carpal variations, including a bifid median nerve and persistent median artery.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two diagnostic tests routinely used for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)-ultrasonography (US) and nerve conduction studies (NCS)-by comparing their accuracy based on surgical results, with the remission of paresthesia as the reference standard.

Methods: We enrolled 115 patients, all of the female gender with a high probability of a clinical diagnosis of CTS. All patients underwent US and NCS for a diagnosis and subsequent surgical treatment.
