The aim of this study was to deepen the assessment of the environmental impacts of a white wine produced in Sardinia (FU 750 ml), performing an attributional LCA. The system boundaries were extended, from 'cradle to gate' (partial LCA) of a previous study, to 'cradle to grave' (total LCA), in order to identify the environmental impacts occurring along the wine life cycle stages (vine planting, grape production, wine production, bottling and packaging, distribution, final disposal of the glass bottle). Some assumptions were made in order to quantify the environmental impact of the transportation phase, regarding the few data which were available.

Homologous recombination (HR) is essential for accurate genome duplication and maintenance of genome stability. In eukaryotes, chromosomal double strand breaks (DSBs) are central to HR during specialized developmental programs of meiosis and antigen receptor gene rearrangements, and form at unusual DNA structures and stalled replication forks. DSBs also result from exposure to ionizing radiation, reactive oxygen species, some anti-cancer agents, or inhibitors of topoisomerase II.

We report the case of a 46-year-old male hospitalized for abdominal pain and fever with history of a David procedure followed by an aortic valve replacement due to severe aortic regurgitation. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and computed tomography showed a large mass floating in the aorta. After surgical excision of the vegetation, attached to the Dacron prosthesis, histological examination revealed Candida hyphae and spores confirming the diagnosis of a mycetoma in an ascending aorta tubular graft.

While mitochondrial Ca(2+) homeostasis has been studied for several decades and many of the functional roles of Ca(2+) accumulation within the matrix have been at least partially clarified, the possibility of modulation of the organelle functions by cAMP remains largely unknown. In this contribution we briefly summarize the key aspects of Ca(2+) and cAMP signalling pathways in mitochondria. In particular, we focus on recent findings concerning the discovery of an autonomous cAMP toolkit within the mitochondrial matrix, its crossroad with mitochondrial Ca(2+) signalling and its role in controlling ATP synthesis.

While the role of mitochondrial Ca²⁺ homeostasis in cell pathophysiology is widely accepted, the possibility that cAMP regulates mitochondrial functions has only recently received experimental support. The site of cAMP production, its targets, and its functions in the organelles remain uncertain. Using a variety of genetic/pharmacological tools, we here demonstrate that the mitochondrial inner membrane is impermeable to cytosolic cAMP, while an autonomous cAMP signaling toolkit is expressed in the matrix.

Although there is growing evidence that the plasma membrane Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent ATPase 4 (PMCA4) is a regulator of neuronal nitric-oxide synthase, the physiological consequence of this regulation is unclear. Regulated changes in mitochondrial morphology and ultrastructure regulate several cellular processes, including apoptosis and, as we recently described, autophagy. Elongated mitochondria are spared from autophagic degradation and possess more cristae, where activity of the ATP synthase is increased, maintaining ATP levels in periods of nutrient depletion. We report a case of type A intramural aortic hematoma (IMH) occurred in a 78 years old female. The clinical scenario (medical history of hypertension, severe substernal chest pain, early diastolic decrescendo murmur as for aortic insufficiency), the laboratory results (no significant troponin level), ECG and transthoracic echocardiography findings (no signs of myocardial ischemia) shifted the initial diagnostic suspicion from acute coronary syndrome to the acute aortic syndrome (AAS) and triggered further imaging tests. Computed tomography revealed an aneurismatic dilatation with thickening of the wall of the ascending aorta without intimal flap.
