In the present work, we report the synthesis and the characterization of a new chiral nucleoaminoacid, in which a diaminobutyric moiety is connected to the DNA nucleobase by an amidic bond, and its oligomerization to give the corresponding nucleo-gamma-peptide. The ability of this synthetic polymer to bind complementary DNA was studied in order to explore its possible use in antigene/antisense or diagnostic applications. Our interest in the presented DNA analogue was also supported by the importance of gamma-aminoacid-containing compounds in natural products of biological activity and by the known stability of gamma-peptides to enzymatic degradation.

Prion diseases are characterized by the conversion of the physiological cellular form of the prion protein (PrP(C)) into an insoluble, partially protease-resistant abnormal scrapie form (PrP(Sc)). PrP(C) is normally expressed in mammalian cell and is highly conserved among species, although its role in cellular function remains elusive. The conversion of PrP(C) to PrP(Sc) parallels a conformational change of the polypeptide from a predominantly alpha-helical to a highly beta-sheet secondary structure.

Materials And Methods: From April 1998 to October 2004, 12 living donor intestinal transplants were performed in 11 patients (7 males, 4 females; average age, 26 years).
We generated single-cycle isolated attosecond pulses around approximately 36 electron volts using phase-stabilized 5-femtosecond driving pulses with a modulated polarization state. Using a complete temporal characterization technique, we demonstrated the compression of the generated pulses for as low as 130 attoseconds, corresponding to less than 1.2 optical cycles.

To examine whether a neuronal cell suspension can be held in vitro for a relatively short period without compromising survival rates and functionality, we have set up an experimental protocol planning 24 h of suspension culture in a rotary wall vessel (RWV) bioreactor before plating in a conventional adherent system. Apoptosis measurement and activated caspase-8, -9, and -3 detection have demonstrated that survey of the cells was not affected. The activity of major antioxidant enzymes (AOE), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT), was significantly decreased in RWV-maintained cells.

Morphometric analyses and the application of immunocytochemical techniques revealed that in Cx46 knockout lens (Cx46 -/-), where Cx50 is expressed alone, the postnatal differentiation of secondary fiber cells proceeds faster and is characterized by an increased number of smaller fiber cells. Conversely, in Cx50 knockout mice (Cx50 -/-), the lenticular mass is considerably reduced and characterized by a small number of fiber cells added during the postnatal period.
