Introduction: Intraductal papillary mucinous tumours (IPMT) were described as a distinct entity in I982. The extent of surgical resection for this disease remains controversial.

Methods: Twelve patients with a diagnosis of IPMT were included in the present retrospective study.

The structure of a manganese(II) complex of terpyridine functionalized with acetylsulfanyl-terminated hexyloxy chains, [Mn(C(23)H(25)N(3)O(2)S)(2)](PF(6))(2), is described. This type of complex is of interest in the study of single-molecule transport properties in open-shell systems. The manganese coordination environment is distorted octahedral but, importantly, with no larger deviations from the idealized geometry than those observed for other metal-terpyridine complexes.

Endolithic photosynthetic microorganisms like cyanobacteria and algae are well known from savannas and deserts of the world, the high Arctic, and also Antarctic habitats like the Dry Valleys in the Ross Dependency. These endolithic microbial communities are thought to be at the limits of life with reported ages in the order of thousands of years. Here we report on an extensive chasmoendolithic cyanobacterial community inside granite rocks of Mt.

The electronic structures of the compounds K[(5-Brsalen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)-Mn(2)M(III)(CN)(6)].2H(2)O (M(III) = Co(III), Cr(III), Fe(III)) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and magnetic susceptibility studies, revealing the manganese(III) single-ion anisotropy and exchange interactions that define the low-lying states of the Mn-M(III)-Mn trimeric units. Despite the presence of an antiferromagnetic intertrimer interaction, the experimental evidence supports the classification of both the Cr(III) and Fe(III) compounds as single-molecule magnets.

Background: Retroperitoneal packing in patients with severe haemorrhage is a cornerstone of modern pelvic fracture management. However, few Danish trauma surgeons have experience with this procedure, and trauma audits show that many hesitate to perform the procedure, indicating a need for hands-on training for this simple and potentially lifesaving procedure.

Materials And Methods: During a six-month period, trauma surgeons were taught the retroperitoneal packing procedure using human corpses at the Department of Pathology at Aarhus University Hospital.

Objective: The overall mortality for patients undergoing surgery for perforated peptic ulcer has increased despite improvements in perioperative monitoring and treatment. The objective of this study was to identify and describe perioperative risk factors in order to identify ways of optimizing the treatment and to improve the outcome of patients with perforated peptic ulcer.

Material And Methods: Three hundred and ninety-eight patients undergoing emergency surgery in four university hospitals in Denmark were included in the study.

Experimental data for antiferromagnetic nanoparticles are often analyzed as if the particles were ferromagnetic. However, due to the volume dependence of the magnetization resulting from uncompensated spins, such analysis will yield erroneous results. This is demonstrated as we analyze ac and dc magnetization data as well as Mössbauer spectra obtained for ferritin.

A ligand field analysis of two structurally related hexanuclear Mn(iii) coordination complexes reveals that the observed difference in their ground spin-state anisotropy originates from the difference in projection coefficients of the single-ion anisotropy to spin states of different total spin quantum-number, S, rather than the geometrical distortions of the metal ions. Furthermore we show that the single-ion second order anisotropy induces fourth and higher order anisotropy terms to the ground spin states of the studied systems, as a consequence of spin-state mixing effects due to the comparable magnitude of the single-ion second order anisotropy and the isotropic exchange parameters.

Background: In 2005, The Danish National Indicator Project (DNIP) reported findings on patients hospitalized with perforated ulcer. The indicator "30-days mortality" showed major discrepancy between the observed mortality of 28% and the chosen standard (10%).

Rationale: An audit committee was appointed to examine quality problems linked to the high mortality.

The title complex, [CrF(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)]ClO(4)·H(2)O, displays a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry around the central chromium(III) ion. The Cr environment is composed of a cis arrangement of two 1,10-phenanthroline [average Cr(III)-N = 2.0726 (10) Å] and two fluoride [average Cr(III)-F = 1.

High-valent Mn-oxo species have been suggested to have a catalytically important role in the water splitting reaction which occurs in the Photosystem II membrane protein. In this study, five- and six-coordinate mononuclear Mn(V) compounds were investigated by polarized X-ray absorption spectroscopy in order to understand the electronic structure and spectroscopic characteristics of high-valent Mn species. Single crystals of the Mn(V)-nitrido and Mn(V)-oxo compounds were aligned along selected molecular vectors with respect to the X-ray polarization vector using X-ray diffraction.

Objective: To investigate treatment practice in non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) caused by gastroduodenal ulcer and how it adheres to the best evidence as documented in randomized studies and meta-analyses.

Material And Methods: The literature was surveyed to identify appropriate practices, and a structured multiple choice questionnaire developed and mailed to all departments in Denmark treating UGIB.

Results: All 42 departments responded.

Zinc ions influence adipose tissue metabolism by regulating leptin secretion and by promoting free fatty acid release and glucose uptake. The mechanisms controlling zinc metabolism in adipose tissue are unknown. We therefore examined the gene-expression levels of a number of zinc-transporting proteins in adipose tissue, comparing subcutaneous fat with visceral fat from lean and obese humans.

Flowering and fruiting as phenological events of 12 tree species in an evergreen tropical mountain rain forest in southern Ecuador were examined over a period of 3-4 years. Leaf shedding of two species was observed for 12 months. Parallel to the phenological recordings, meteorological parameters were monitored in detail and related to the flowering and fruiting activity of the trees.
