Background: Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a hallmark of cardiac dysfunction in patients with aortic stenosis (AS), and can be triggered by left ventricular (LV) pressure overload in mice by aortic banding (AB). Syndecan-4 is a transmembrane heparan sulphate proteoglycan which is found increased in the myocardium of AS patients and AB mice. The role of syndecan-4 in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is not well understood.

A 4D continuous representation of myocardial velocity fields from tissue phase mapping magnetic resonance imaging.

Myocardial velocities carry important diagnostic information in a range of cardiac diseases, and play an important role in diagnosing and grading left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Tissue Phase Mapping (TPM) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) enables discrete sampling of the myocardium's underlying smooth and continuous velocity field. This paper presents a post-processing framework for constructing a spatially and temporally smooth and continuous representation of the myocardium's velocity field from TPM data.

Sacubitril/valsartan ameliorates cardiac hypertrophy and preserves diastolic function in cardiac pressure overload.

Aims: Sacubitril/valsartan (sac/val) has shown superior effect compared with blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. We aimed to investigate effects of sac/val compared with valsartan in a pressure overload model of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Methods And Results: Sprague-Dawley rats underwent aortic banding or sham (n = 16) surgery and were randomized to sac/val (n = 28), valsartan (n = 29), or vehicle (n = 26) treatment for 8 weeks.

The association between physical complications following female genital cutting and the mental health of 12-year-old Gambian girls: A community-based cross-sectional study.

Background: Female genital cutting (FGC) involve an acute physical trauma that hold a potential risk for immediate and long-term complications and mental health problems. The aim of this study was to examine the prediction of depressive symptoms and psychological distress by the immediate and current physical complications following FGC. Further, to examine whether the age at which 12-year-old Gambian girls had undergone the procedure affected mental health outcomes.

Analysis of right ventricular mass from magnetic resonance imaging data: a simple post-processing algorithm for correction of partial-volume effects.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the right ventricle (RV) offers important diagnostic information, but the accuracy of this information is hampered by the complex geometry of the RV. Here, we propose a novel postprocessing algorithm that corrects for partial-volume effects in the analysis of standard MRI cine images of RV mass (RVm) and evaluate the method in clinical and preclinical data. Self-corrected RVm measurement was compared with conventionally measured RVm in 16 patients who showed different clinical indications for cardiac MRI and in 17 Wistar rats with different degrees of pulmonary congestion.

Assessment of cardiac structure and function in a murine model of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a significant cause of premature seizure-related death. An association between SUDEP and cardiac remodeling has been suggested. However, whether SUDEP is a direct consequence of acute or recurrent seizures is unsettled.

NLRP3 Inflammasome Promotes Myocardial Remodeling During Diet-Induced Obesity.

Obesity is an increasingly prevalent metabolic disorder in the modern world and is associated with structural and functional changes in the heart. The NLRP3 inflammasome is an innate immune sensor that can be activated in response to endogenous danger signals and triggers activation of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18. Increasing evidence points to the involvement of the NLRP3 inflammasome in obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance, and we hypothesized that it also could play a role in the development of obesity induced cardiac alterations.

Accelerated magnetic resonance imaging tissue phase mapping of the rat myocardium using compressed sensing with iterative soft-thresholding.

Introduction: Tissue Phase Mapping (TPM) MRI can accurately measure regional myocardial velocities and strain. The lengthy data acquisition, however, renders TPM prone to errors due to variations in physiological parameters, and reduces data yield and experimental throughput. The purpose of the present study is to examine the quality of functional measures (velocity and strain) obtained by highly undersampled TPM data using compressed sensing reconstruction in infarcted and non-infarcted rat hearts.

Lung diseases with hypoxia are complicated by pulmonary hypertension, leading to heart failure and death. No pharmacological treatment exists. Increased proinflammatory cytokines are found in hypoxic patients, suggesting an inflammatory pathogenesis.

Comorbid psychiatric disorders in a clinical sample of adults with ADHD, and associations with education, work and social characteristics: a cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Adults with attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) report high rates of comorbid disorders, educational and occupational failure, and family instability. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders in a clinical population of adults with ADHD and to examine associations between educational level, work participation, social characteristics and the rates of psychiatric comorbidity.

Methods: Out of 796 patients diagnosed with ADHD in a specialised outpatient clinic in Oslo, Norway, 548 (68%) agreed to participate in this cross-sectional study: 277 women and 271 men.

Overexpression of integrin α11 induces cardiac fibrosis in mice.

Aim: To understand the role of the collagen-binding integrin α11 in vivo, we have used a classical approach of creating a mouse strain overexpressing integrin α11. A transgenic mouse strain overexpressing α11 in muscle tissues was analysed in the current study with special reference to the heart tissue.

Methods: We generated and phenotyped integrin α11 transgenic (TG) mice by echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging and histology.
