Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on embedding fullerenes into a chiral environment to create unique materials with applications in chiroptical technology and enantioselective catalysts, as well as understanding chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS).
  • - Researchers designed a chiral Pd2L4 capsule using a special 'ribbon-shaped' ligand derived from Tröger's base naphthalimide, which offers a compact structure with a significant inner cavity for hosting fullerenes.
  • - The binding of fullerenes like C60, C70, and corannulenes in acetonitrile results in measurable changes in their optical properties, demonstrating the induction of circular dichroism (CD) that was confirmed through X-ray

Here, we report the synthesis of a family of chiral ZnL tetrahedral cages by subcomponent self-assembly. These cages contain a flexible trialdehyde subcomponent that allows them to adopt stereochemically distinct configurations. The incorporation of enantiopure 1-phenylethylamine produced Δ and Λ enantiopure cages, in contrast to the racemates that resulted from the incorporation of achiral 4-methoxyaniline.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces two new structural types in heteroleptic PdAB assemblies: syn-cis-PdAB bowls and cis-PdAB rings that can be bowl-shaped (syn) or saddle-shaped (anti), built upon a common longer fluorenone-based bis-monodentate ligand.
  • The size and shape of the rings are influenced by shorter ligands with various para-pyridine donors and aromatic backbones, which affect the assembly's nuclearity through changes in ligand angles and bulk.
  • The luminescent properties of the fluorenone ligand are preserved in these assemblies, which can bind chiral guest molecules and generate significant guest-induced circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL

Introduction: To study digestive system cancer risks in individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) in the biologic era.

Methods: We used population-level administrative and cancer registry data from Ontario, Canada, (1994-2020) to compare people with IBD to matched controls (1:10 by sex and birth year) on trends in age-sex standardized cancer incidence and risk ratios of incident cancers and cancer-related deaths.

Results: Among 110,919 people with IBD and 1,109,190 controls, colorectal cancer incidence (per 100,000 person-years) declined similarly in people with ulcerative colitis (average annual percentage change [AAPC] -1.

Molecular building blocks, capable of adopting several strongly deviating conformations, are of particular interest in the development of stimuli-responsive self-assemblies. The pronounced structural flexibility of a short acridone-based bridging ligand, equipped with two monodentate isoquinoline donors, is herein exploited to assemble a surprisingly diverse series of coordination-driven Pd(II) architectures. First, it can form a highly twisted PdL helicate, transformable into the corresponding mesocate, controlled by temperature, counter anion and choice of solvent.

Background And Aims: There is an incomplete understanding of the full safety profiles of repeated COVID-19 vaccinations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Among individuals with IBD, we assessed whether COVID-19 vaccines were associated with serious adverse events of special interest (AESI) and health care utilization [all-cause hospitalizations, Emergency Department (ED) visits, gastroenterology visits, IBD-related visits].

Methods: Using comprehensive administrative health data from Ontario, Canada, adults with IBD who received at least one COVID-19 vaccine from December 2020-January 2022 were included.

Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exhibit considerable interindividual variability in medication response, highlighting the need for precision medicine approaches to optimize and tailor treatment. Pharmacogenetics (PGx) offers the ability to individualize dosing by examining genetic factors underlying the metabolism of medications such as thiopurines. Pharmacogenetic testing can identify individuals who may be at risk for thiopurine dose-dependent adverse reactions including myelosuppression.

Clinicians, researchers, regulators, and other decision-makers increasingly rely on evidence from real-world data (RWD), including data routinely accumulating in health and administrative databases. RWD studies often rely on algorithms to operationalize variable definitions. An algorithm is a combination of codes or concepts used to identify persons with a specific health condition or characteristic.

Objectives: Health administrative data can be used to improve the health of people who inject drugs by informing public health surveillance and program planning, monitoring, and evaluation. However, methodological gaps in the use of these data persist due to challenges in accurately identifying injection drug use (IDU) at the population level. In this study, we validated case-ascertainment algorithms for identifying people who inject drugs using health administrative data in Ontario, Canada.

Heteroleptic coordination cages, nonstatistically assembled from a set of matching ligands, can be obtained by mixing individual components or via cage-to-cage transformations from homoleptic precursors. Based on the latter approach, we here describe a new level of self-sorting in coordination cage systems, namely, 'heteromeric completive self-sorting'. Here, two heteroleptic assemblies of type PdAB and PdAC, sharing one common ligand component A but differing in the other, are shown to coexist in solution.

Self-assembled hosts, inspired by biological receptors and catalysts, show application potential in sustainable synthesis, energy conversion and medicine. Implementing multiple functionalities in the form of distinguishable building blocks, however, is difficult without risking narcissistic self-sorting or a statistical mess. Here we report a systematic series of integratively self-assembled heteroleptic cages in which two square-planar Pd cations are bridged by four different bis-pyridyl ligands, A, B, C and D, via synergistic effects to exclusively form a single isomer-the lantern-shaped cage [PdABCD].

Article Synopsis
  • Israel has a significant Jewish immigrant population and a high rate of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), prompting a study to compare IBD prevalence among immigrants and Israel-born Jews.
  • A total of 33,544 IBD patients were analyzed, revealing that 15% were immigrants, with ulcerative colitis (UC) being more common in this group, particularly among those who immigrated before 1990.
  • The results indicate that the longer immigrants stay in Israel, the higher their prevalence of IBD, which is influenced by the risk associated with their country of origin.

Stimuli-responsive behaviour is key to the design of smart materials, surfaces, nano-systems and effector molecules, allowing their application as switchable catalysts, molecular transporters, bioimaging probes or caged drugs. Supramolecular chemistry has embraced the widespread integration of photoswitches because of their precise spatiotemporal addressability and waste-free nature. In the vibrant area of discrete metal-mediated self-assembly, however, photoswitches are still rarely employed.
