Acute Kidney Injury Complicating Critical Forms of COVID-19: risk Factors and Prognostic Impact.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) mainly affects the respiratory tract, but different organs may be involved including the kidney. Data on acute kidney injury (AKI) in critical forms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are scarce. We aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors and prognostic impact of AKI complicating critical forms of COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Beaver Farm, Mongolia, 2021.

We report an outbreak of COVID-19 in a beaver farm in Mongolia in 2021. Genomic characterization revealed a unique combination of mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 of the infected beavers. Based on these findings, increased surveillance of farmed beavers should be encouraged.

Effect of Micronutrients and L-Carnitine as Antioxidant on Sperm Parameters, Genome Integrity, and ICSI Outcomes: Randomized, Double-Blind, and Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

The evaluation of sperm DNA integrity is recommended in the sixth edition of the 2021 World Health Organization guidelines. Oxidative stress has been identified as a crucial factor leading to genome decay, lipid peroxidation, and nucleoprotein oxidation. This double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of oral antioxidant treatment (Fertilis), which contains L-carnitine and some micronutrients, in the improvement of conventional sperm parameters, sperm DNA integrity and in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) outcomes.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals and male fertility: from physiological to molecular effects.

The deleterious effects of chemical or non-chemical endocrine disruptors (EDs) on male fertility potential is well documented but still not fully elucidated. For example, the detection of industrial chemicals' metabolites in seminal plasma and follicular fluid can affect efficiency of the gametogenesis, the maturation and competency of gametes and has guided scientists to hypothesize that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may disrupt hormonal homoeostasis by leading to a wide range of hormonal control impairments. The effects of EDCs exposure on reproductive health are highly dependent on factors including the type of EDCs, the duration of exposure, individual susceptibility, and the presence of other co-factors.

Paternal Age Matters: Association with Sperm Criteria's- Spermatozoa DNA Integrity and Methylation Profile.

Advanced age has been reported to negatively affect sperm parameters and spermatozoa DNA integrity. A decline in sperm criteria was also associated with altered epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation with a potential downstream impact on in vitro fertilization success and clinical outcomes. The aim of the present retrospective study was to clarify the association between advanced paternal age (APA) and sperm parameters, DNA integrity and DNA methylation profile.

Acute presentation of Chiari malformation type I in adulthood with arm swelling, a case report and literature review.

Introduction: Chiari malformation type I (CM-I) with cervicothoracic syringomyelia can progress slowly this condition which is very common in clinical practice, particularly in children.

Case Presentation: Patients typically present with chronic complaints, including headache, dizziness, and numbness, although are few reports in the literature describing pediatric patients who developed acute neurological deficits caused by CM-I. Here, we report an unusual presentation of this condition; the patient presented with sudden onset arm swelling with no precipitating factors that could explain the diagnosis.

Case Report: Tropical sprue, diagnostic challenges of an old but unrecognized disease.

Tropical sprue (TS) is a post-infective disease of the small bowel characterized by a malabsorption syndrome affecting tropics inhabitants and visitors. Diagnosis of TS remains challenging since it can be confused with common diarrheal diseases, especially in non-endemic areas. We report a Tunisian case of latent TS.

Evaluation of individual and combined NLR, LMR and CLR ratio for prognosis disease severity and outcomes in patients with COVID-19.

Object: The study aimed to utilize the peripheral blood immunological parameters and resulting individual and combined inflammatory indices [neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) and C-reactive protein/lymphocyte ratio (CLR)] in predicting the prognosis and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Materials And Methods: The measurements of individual and combined inflammatory indices (NLR, LMR and CLR) were performed at hospital admission and at last day of hospitalization for COVID-19 patients.

Results: Prominent elevation of NLR and CLR among patients with refractory disease admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and deceased patients was found when compared with moderate ill patients and healthy controls.

Unusual presentation of a giant thoracic spinal cord lipoma.

Introduction: Non-dysraphic intradural spinal cord lipomas are rare, and true intramedullary cervical-thoracic lipomas are extremely rare. Spinal lipomas usually present with chronic, progressive myelopathic features. Unlike dysraphic lipomas, which are usually located in the lumbo-sacral region, non-dysraphic lipomas are usually located in the cervical or thoracic spine.

Phenytoin Seizure Prophylaxis Therapy Resulting in Severe Thrombocytopenia After Brain Tumor Debulking Surgery.

BACKGROUND Phenytoin is an antiepileptic drug that is usually prescribed as a prevention treatment for tonic-clonic seizures or partial seizures, and as a prophylaxis for the neurosurgical related seizures. Phenytoin administration has several drawbacks; one drawback phenytoin-induced thrombocytopenia, which is a rare and significant adverse event. We report a rare adverse event after phenytoin prophylaxis therapy after a brain tumor debulking surgery, which resulted in severe unpredicted thrombocytopenia.

Salinity and low temperature effects on the performance of column biochemical reactors for the treatment of acidic and neutral mine drainage.

Passive biochemical reactors (PBRs) represent a promising option for the treatment of mine drainage. In this study, the influence of temperature (22 and 5 °C), salinity (0 and 20 g/L) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the efficiency of PBRs for the treatment of acidic and neutral mine drainage (AMD and NMD) was evaluated. To do so, eight 11 L PBRs were set-up and operated with vertically upward flow.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the PureSperm density gradient centrifugation on the selecting sperm with less chromosomal aneuploidy. Semen samples were obtained from 30 infertile men with teratozoospermia and 15 fertile men with normal semen parameters. The frequencies of numerical chromosomes aberrations were simultaneously identified in neat semen and in the different fractions of the density gradient centrifugation from the same samples.
