-
- In a review of 227 patients who underwent lung cancer surgery, 20.7% were identified as having SMPLC, primarily with distinct tumors and good survival rates over four years.*

Article Synopsis
- Accurate staging of lung cancer is essential for effective treatment, prompting a study to evaluate the prevalence of synchronous multiple primary lung cancers (SMPLC) at a large academic center after an audit showed unexpectedly high rates of SMPLC.
- Out of 83 patients who had surgery for non-small cell lung cancer, 20.5% were found to have SMPLCs, significantly higher than typical findings, while others had single lung cancers or metastatic lesions.
- The study highlights the importance of identifying SMPLCs to avoid under treatment and improve patient outcomes, especially since many of those with SMPLCs also had a history of previous cancers.
