We report quality of life and indirect costs from patient reported outcomes from the ROSEL randomized control trial comparing stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR, also known as stereotactic body radiotherapy or SBRT) versus surgical resection for medically operable stage IA non-small cell lung cancer. ROSEL closed prematurely after accruing and randomizing 22 patients. This exploratory analysis found the global health related quality of life and indirect costs to be significantly favorable and cheaper, with SABR.

Objectives: As suggested by in-vitro data, we hypothesize that subtypes of KRAS mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) respond differently to chemotherapy regimens.

Methods: Patients with advanced NSCLC and known KRAS mutation, treated with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy, were retrieved from hospital databases.

Background: The standard of care for operable, stage I, non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection or sampling. Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for inoperable stage I NSCLC has shown promising results, but two independent, randomised, phase 3 trials of SABR in patients with operable stage I NSCLC (STARS and ROSEL) closed early due to slow accrual. Introduction: We evaluated the trends in the prevalence of comorbidity and its prognostic impact in a cohort of unselected patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Patients And Methods: All patients (n = 4142) diagnosed with SCLC from 1995 to 2012 were identified from the population-based Netherlands Cancer Registry in the Eindhoven region.

Results: The prevalence of comorbidity increased from 55% in 1995 to 1998 to 76% in 2011 to 2012 and multimorbidity (ie, ≥ 2 concomitant diseases) from 23% to 51%.

Pulmonary carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumors histopathologically subclassified into typical (TC; no necrosis, <2 mitoses per 2 mm) and atypical (AC; necrosis or 2 to 10 mitoses per 2 mm). The reproducibility of lung carcinoid classification, however, has not been extensively studied and may be hampered by the presence of pyknotic apoptosis mimicking mitotic figures. The prevalence of osteoporosis is high in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is bone mineral density (BMD) measurements as assessed by dual energy absorptiometry (DXA) scanning as well as vertebral fractures as assessed by instant vertebral assessment (IVA). Purpose: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) may be not only a prognostic marker but also predictive for COX-2 inhibition.
