A multicenter study comparing the bacterial reduction on flexible endoscopes without a working channel between UV-C light disinfection versus standard endoscope Washer Disinfection: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: To prevent cross-contamination between patients, adequate reprocessing is necessary when using flexible endoscopes (FEs) without a working channel. The current reprocessing process using an Endoscope Washer Disinfector (EWD) is time-consuming. Ultraviolet light group C (UV-C) exposition is an alternative and fast disinfection method and has previously been shown to adequately reduce Colony Forming Units (CFUs) on FEs without a working channel.

[Temporomandibular joint dysfunction as a result of a condylar metastasis].

An 83-year-old man reported recent temporomandibular joint complaints and a swelling near his ear. The swelling moved whileopening the mouth. Additional imaging showed an osseous deviation of the right condyle with extension into the masticator space.

A Comprehensive Grading System for a Magnetic Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Procedure in Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

A magnetic sentinel lymph node biopsy ((SLN)B) procedure has recently been shown feasible in oral cancer patients. However, a grading system is absent for proper identification and classification, and thus for clinical reporting. Based on data from eight complete magnetic SLNB procedures, we propose a provisional grading system.

A complete magnetic sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure in oral cancer patients: A pilot study.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility and merits of a complete magnetic approach for a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) procedure in oral cancer patients.

Materials And Methods: This study included ten oral cancer patients (stage cT1-T2N0M0) scheduled for elective neck dissection (END). Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) were administered peritumorally prior to surgery.

Conversion to reverse shoulder arthroplasty fifty-one years after shoulder arthrodesis: A case report.

Background: Patients with a shoulder arthrodesis generally experience restriction in range of motion and limitations in activities of daily living. In addition, up to one-third of the patients deals with serious peri scapular pain. The conversion of a shoulder arthrodesis in a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has been described as an effective treatment to achieve better function and decreased pain, although literature is sparse.

New insights in the treatment of acromioclavicular separation.

A direct force on the superior aspect of the shoulder may cause acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation or separation. Severe dislocations can lead to chronic impairment, especially in the athlete and high-demand manual laborer. The dislocation is classified according to Rockwood.

Validity and Reliability of the Achillometer(®): An Ankle Dorsiflexion Measurement Device.

Limited ankle dorsiflexion is closely related to important foot and ankle pathologies. Various measurement devices and methods have been examined, but these have demonstrated limited validity and reliability. The purpose of the present study was to assess the validity and intra- and interobserver reliability of the Achillometer(®).

Effects of momentary self-monitoring on empowerment in a randomized controlled trial in patients with depression.

Background: Interventions based on the experience sampling method (ESM) are ideally suited to provide insight into personal, contextualized affective patterns in the flow of daily life. Recently, we showed that an ESM-intervention focusing on positive affect was associated with a decrease in symptoms in patients with depression. The aim of the present study was to examine whether ESM-intervention increased patient empowerment.

Imaging findings of the orbital and intracranial complications of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis.

Unlabelled: In patients with acute bacterial rhinosinusitis severe orbital and intracranial complications can occur. This review will illustrate the anatomic relationship between the paranasal sinuses and the orbital and intracranial compartments. Subsequently, the spectrum of orbital and intracranial complications of rhinosinusitis and related imaging findings will be discussed and illustrated by case material from daily practice.

Experience sampling-based personalized feedback and positive affect: a randomized controlled trial in depressed patients.

Objectives: Positive affect (PA) plays a crucial role in the development, course, and recovery of depression. Recently, we showed that a therapeutic application of the experience sampling method (ESM), consisting of feedback focusing on PA in daily life, was associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms. The present study investigated whether the experience of PA increased during the course of this intervention.

Correlation of human papillomavirus status with apparent diffusion coefficient of diffusion-weighted MRI in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Background: Identification of prognostic patient characteristics in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is of great importance. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive HNSCCs have favorable response to (chemo)radiotherapy. Apparent diffusion coefficient, derived from diffusion-weighted MRI, has also shown to predict treatment response.

[An ill woman with persisting globus].

We report a 56-year-old woman with a migrating foreign body in the digestive tract, eventually located at the prevertebral space. The foreign body was missed during outpatient flexible endoscopy. Most important complication is mediastinitis, clinically presenting as malaise, fever and pain between the scapulae.

[Sleep-wake disorders and DSM-5].

Background: Most individuals with mental disorders complain about the problems they experience with sleeping and waking. It is becoming evident that careful diagnosis of sleep-wake disorders is of great importance for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders. Since the introduction of the DSM-IV, clinical scientific research has provided important new insights in this field.

A therapeutic application of the experience sampling method in the treatment of depression: a randomized controlled trial.

In depression, the ability to experience daily life positive affect predicts recovery and reduces relapse rates. Interventions based on the experience sampling method (ESM-I) are ideally suited to provide insight in personal, contextualized patterns of positive affect. The aim of this study was to examine whether add-on ESM-derived feedback on personalized patterns of positive affect is feasible and useful to patients, and results in a reduction of depressive symptomatology.

The serotonin transporter 5-HTTLPR polymorphism in the association between sleep quality and affect.

A link between sleep and affect is well-known. Serotonin (5-HT) is associated with the regulation of affective as well as sleep-related processes. A functional polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with serotonergic functioning.

Outcome after conservative and operative treatment of children with idiopathic toe walking: a systematic review of literature.

When toe walking persists after the age of 2 years in the absence of any neurological or orthopedic abnormalities, it is referred to as idiopathic toe walking (ITW). When the plantar flexion persists, an equinus contracture can develop. There is inconsistency in the treatment of choice of this condition.

Day-to-day associations between subjective sleep and affect in regard to future depression in a female population-based sample.

Background: Poor sleep is a risk factor for depression, but little is known about the underlying mechanisms.

Aims: Disentangling potential mechanisms by which sleep may be related to depression by zooming down to the 'micro-level' of within-person daily life patterns of subjective sleep and affect using the experience sampling method (ESM).

Method: A population-based twin sample consisting of 553 women underwent a 5-day baseline ESM protocol assessing subjective sleep and affect together with four follow-up assessments of depression.

Preliminary results of 97 percutaneous gastrocnemius muscular lengthening operations in neurologically healthy children with an equinus contracture.

Background: We report a gastrocnemius lengthening in neurologically healthy children, whose gastrocnemius equinus could not be corrected non-operatively.

Methods: Fifty-five children with an equinus contracture were included in this study. Ninety-seven operations were performed in these patients.

Background: The curriculum for the Academic Training Course in Psychiatry in South- Limburg (UOP-ZL) needed to be modernised. There were widely differing views about the purpose and function of psychiatry and about the structure of the curriculum. Trainees failed to attend regularly because of their daily duties.

Hook plate fixation of acute displaced lateral clavicle fractures: mid-term results and a brief literature overview.

Background: The clavicle hook plate achieves like most other operative techniques, a high percentage of union and a low percentage of complications however concerns about long term complications still exist, particularly the involvement of the acromioclavicular joint.

Methods: To evaluate the results and long term effects in use of this plate we performed a retrospective analysis with a mean follow up of 65 months (5.4 years) of 28 consecutive patients with acute displaced lateral clavicle fractures, treated with the clavicle hook plate.

Prevention of seroma formation after axillary dissection in breast cancer: a systematic review.

Background: The most common complication after breast cancer surgery is seroma formation. It is a source of significant morbidity and discomfort. Many articles have been published describing risk factors and preventive measures.

Momentary assessment technology as a tool to help patients with depression help themselves.

Objective: Given high relapse rates and residual symptoms in depression, new strategies to increase treatment effectiveness are required. A promising avenue is to investigate how electronic momentary assessment technology may contribute to clinical assessment and interventions in depression.

Method: A literature search was conducted focusing on the potential contribution of momentary assessments to clinical applications in depression.

Handlebar hernia: a case report and literature review on traumatic abdominal wall hernia in children.

A rare case of abdominal trauma, a handlebar hernia, is described, as well as a review of the pertinent literature. A 7-year-old boy presented to our emergency room after sustaining blunt force to the abdomen; he fell on the handlebar of his bicycle. Immediately after the accident, a bulge was noticeable at the point of impact.

Cognitive functioning in young and middle-aged unmedicated out-patients with major depression: testing the effort and cognitive speed hypotheses.

Background: Cognitive deficits are common in major depressive disorder, but their nature is unclear. The effort hypothesis states that performance on effortful tasks is disproportionately impaired compared with the performance on automatic tasks. The cognitive speed hypothesis states that depression is characterized by cognitive slowness, which is a source of cognitive dysfunctioning.

Salivary cortisol patterns and cognitive speed in major depression: a comparison with allergic rhinitis and healthy control subjects.

Few studies have investigated the relationship between cortisol and cognitive functions other than memory in depression. This study investigated daily salivary cortisol patterns (basal cortisol levels at 08:00, 16:00, and 21:00 h and flatness of the diurnal curve) in relation to cognitive speed and memory. Twenty-seven unmedicated outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) were compared with 36 healthy controls and with 20 allergic rhinitis patients, to determine whether effects should be ascribed to MDD or to more general disease-related processes.
