Article Synopsis
  • Renal dysfunction frequently occurs in patients with cirrhosis, either due to acute illness or the progression of liver disease, but comprehensive evaluations of renal function markers have not been thoroughly studied.
  • A retrospective study was conducted on hospitalized cirrhosis patients from January 2021 to June 2023, involving a detailed assessment of renal function across 43 parameters.
  • The findings revealed that most patients exhibited renal abnormalities, with significant overestimations in estimated glomerular filtration rates compared to measured creatinine clearance, highlighting the importance of multiparametric assessments for properly evaluating kidney function in these patients.*

Gene fusions and MET exon skipping drive oncogenesis in 8-9% and 3% of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) respectively. Their detection are essential for the management of patients since they confer sensitivity to specific targeted therapies with significant clinical benefit over conventional chemotherapy. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) account for historical reference techniques however molecular-based technologies (RNA-based sequencing and RT-PCR) are emerging as alternative or complementary methods.

Viral disease outbreaks remain a significant limiting factor for aquaculture. The majority of licensed vaccines used in the industry are administered as oil-adjuvanted formulations carrying inactivated whole pathogens. Cell-mediated immune responses, in particular those based on virus-specific cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs) to conventional inactivated oil-based vaccines, are largely unexplored.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a challenge to the management of non-COVID pathologies such as lymphatic diseases and lipoedema. The use of telemedicine can prevent the spread of the disease. A system is needed to help determine the clinical priority and selection of face-to-face or telemedicine options for each patient and how to carry them out during the pandemic.

The high global burden of over one million annual lethal fungal infections reflects a lack of protective vaccines, late diagnosis and inadequate chemotherapy. Here, we have generated a unique set of fully human anti-Candida monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with diagnostic and therapeutic potential by expressing recombinant antibodies from genes cloned from the B cells of patients suffering from candidiasis. Single class switched memory B cells isolated from donors serum-positive for anti-Candida IgG were differentiated in vitro and screened against recombinant Candida albicans Hyr1 cell wall protein and whole fungal cell wall preparations.

Subdural hematoma (SDH) following labor epidural analgesia is a rare neurological complication. SDH is a late complication of this procedure; it is caused by a leak of cerebrospinal fluid that may damage the vascular structures of the brain. Persistent headache in the days after labor epidural analgesia is a nonspecific clinical symptom caused by hematoma.

Objective: Determine the changes in shoulder strength, shoulder range of motion, and arm volume in breast cancer patients treated with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) METHOD: Sixty-eight SLNB and 44 ALND patients were followed up from pre-surgery to 5 years after surgery. Primary outcomes were the differences between affected and non-affected sides for the following: shoulder strength measured by dynamometry, shoulder range of motion measured by goniometry, and lymphedema measured by volume. As a secondary outcome, health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed by the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for breast cancer (FACT-B+4) questionnaires.

Objectives: The management of patients with recurrent neck cancer invading the carotid artery is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the overall survival and healthy survival years (QALY) as well as the patency of carotid revascularization after enbloc tumor resection followed by complementary radiotherapy.

Methods: From 2000 to 2016, 42 consecutive patients with recurrent neck cancer invading the carotid artery underwent resection of the tumor associated with reconstruction of the carotid artery with a PTFE prosthesis (n=31) or with a saphenous vein graft (n=11).

Most fungal pathogens of humans display robust protective oxidative stress responses that contribute to their pathogenicity. The induction of enzymes that detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an essential component of these responses. We showed previously that ectopic expression of the heme-containing catalase enzyme in Candida albicans enhances resistance to oxidative stress, combinatorial oxidative plus cationic stress, and phagocytic killing.

The management of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) in patients with hypertension has been the topic of great controversy. Major contemporary clinical trials such as the Cardiovascular Outcomes for Renal Artery lesions (CORAL) and Angioplasty and Stenting for Renal Atherosclerotic lesions (ASTRAL) have failed to show significant benefit of revascularization over medical management in controlling blood pressure and preserving renal function. We present here the implications and limitations of these trials and formulate recommendations for management of ARAS.

The overall understanding of the molecular etiologies of intellectual disability (ID) and developmental delay (DD) is increasing as next-generation sequencing technologies identify genetic variants in individuals with such disorders. However, detailed analyses conclusively confirming these variants, as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms explaining the diseases, are often lacking. Here, we report on an ID syndrome caused by de novo heterozygous loss-of-function (LoF) mutations in SON.
