Homeless crack cocaine users: Territories and territorialities in the constitution of social support networks for health.

Homeless crack users are an important segment of the population living in extreme vulnerability in Brazil. In 2011, the Consultório na Rua - CnaR (Street Clinic) was created, to improve access to health care for this population. Considering building up social support networks as a strategy to face life's difficulties, this study aims to analyse how crack users, in Rio de Janeiro, relate to territory and build social support networks to deal with their everyday life challenges and health needs.

HDAC3 Is Required for the Downregulation of RORγt during Thymocyte Positive Selection.

To generate functional peripheral T cells, proper gene regulation during T cell development is critical. In this study, we found that histone deacetylase (HDAC) 3 is required for T cell development. T cell development in CD2-icre HDAC3 conditional knockout (cKO) mice (HDAC3-cKO) was blocked at positive selection, resulting in few CD4 and CD8 T cells, and it could not be rescued by a TCR transgene.

NKAP Regulates Invariant NKT Cell Proliferation and Differentiation into ROR-γt-Expressing NKT17 Cells.

Invariant NKT (iNKT) cells are a unique lineage with characteristics of both adaptive and innate lymphocytes, and they recognize glycolipids presented by an MHC class I-like CD1d molecule. During thymic development, iNKT cells also differentiate into NKT1, NKT2, and NKT17 functional subsets that preferentially produce cytokines IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-17, respectively, upon activation. Newly selected iNKT cells undergo a burst of proliferation, which is defective in mice with a specific deletion of NKAP in the iNKT cell lineage, leading to severe reductions in thymic and peripheral iNKT cell numbers.

An Essential Role for the Transcription Factor Runx1 in T Cell Maturation.

The transcription factor Runx1 has essential roles throughout hematopoiesis. Here, we demonstrate that Runx1 is critical for T cell maturation. Peripheral naïve CD4(+) T cells from CD4-cre Runx1 cKO mice are phenotypically and functionally immature as shown by decreased production of TNF-α upon TCR stimulation.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of urine for prostate cancer detection: a preliminary study.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra were obtained from urine samples from subjects diagnosed with prostate cancer as well as from healthy controls, using Au nanoparticles as substrates. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the spectral data, followed by linear discriminant analysis (LDA), leads to a classification model with a sensitivity of 100 %, a specificity of 89 %, and an overall diagnostic accuracy of 95 %. Even considering the very limited number of samples involved in this report, preliminary results from this approach are extremely promising, encouraging further investigation.

Sex-specific association of the Reelin gene with bipolar disorder.

The Reelin gene (RELN) encodes a secretory glycoprotein critical for brain development and synaptic plasticity. Post-mortem studies have shown lower Reelin protein levels in the brains of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BP) compared with controls. Lessons from 52 patients with leydig cell tumor of the testis: the GUONE (North-Eastern Uro-Oncological Group, Italy) experience.

Introduction: The goal of the study was to define treatment rules for the uncommon, rarely (10%) malignant and chemorefractory Leydig cell tumors (LCT) of the testis.

Methods: The main clinical data of patients treated in centers affiliated to the GUONE (North-Eastern Uro-Oncological Group, Italy) were reviewed. We considered 52 patients (54 tumors, 2 bilateral) whose ages ranged from 13 to 70 years (mean 36).

The Neuregulin 1 gene (NRG1) has been associated with schizophrenia, and, to a lesser extent, with bipolar disorder (BP). We investigated the association of NRG1 with BP in a large family sample, and then performed analyses according to the presence of psychotic features or mood-incongruent psychotic features. AIMS OF THE STUDY: Carcinosarcomas (sarcomatoid carcinomas) are controversial, biphasic tumors composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. Uptake and intracellular distribution of idarubicin in secondary cultures of normal and neoplastic urothelium.

This study analyzes the uptake and endocellular distribution of idarubicin (IDA) in normal and neoplastic urothelial secondary cultures in relation to the changes in concentration and time of exposure. The urothelial lines were isolated by Freshney's method from biopsy fragments taken from five patients with superficial bladder cancer. Pharmacological experiments were carried out on subcultures previously immunophenotypically characterized and did not exceed ten passages.

Buserelin treatment of advanced prostatic carcinoma: prognostic factor analysis.
