Background: Facial analysis for orthognathic surgery aims to identify facial features and determine how occlusion should be corrected to achieve facial balance. Several artificial neural networks have been developed to detect facial landmarks; however, no publications have reported the application of neural networks to measure facial proportions specifically for orthognathic surgery planning. Objectives: To develop a computer program that automates facial measurements through photograph capture, as well as to present the development stages of the program and the test results evaluating its effectiveness.

This systematic review aims to determine whether the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) influences the immunohistochemical expression of programmed cell death-1 ligand (PD-L1) in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). PD-L1 immunohistochemical expression varies in OPSCC, and the presence of HPV is a plausible explanation for this variability. Comprehending these findings is crucial, as high PD-L1 expression in the tumor microenvironment of OPSCC can help identify patient subgroups that could be suitable for immunotherapy.

Statement Of Problem: Three-dimensional printing is a rapid and cost-effective method that eliminates material waste during the manufacture of indirect restorations. Parameters such as print angle significantly affect the physical properties of the printed material. Several manufacturers suggest using an angle of 45 degrees to perform printing; however, different angles have been used, and the optimum parameters are unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored muscle pain in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) using various diagnostic tools, including thermography, algometry, and EMG, to examine the relationship between muscle pain and muscle activity.
  • Researchers found that symptomatic muscles showed lower temperature and less hyperactivity at rest, indicating that pain may be associated with hypoactivity instead of hyperactivity of the muscles.
  • The study suggests that treatments should focus on addressing the neurophysiological factors that affect muscle recruitment in patients with TMD-related muscle pain.

Statement Of Problem: The demand to streamline workflow while increasing patient comfort and satisfaction in the manufacturing of removable complete dentures (CDs) is growing, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology has gained prominence. However, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the clinical performance and patient-related outcome measures (PROMs) of digitally fabricated complete dentures is lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether digitally fabricated CDs improve the clinical performance and PROMs compared with conventionally fabricated CDs.

Background: In the last decade, tissue-engineering strategies for regenerating the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have been investigated. This may be a promising strategy for the minimally invasive restoration of joint integrity.

Objectives: To evaluate whether dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) loaded in a light-occured hydrogel made of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) enhance the regeneration of osteochondral defects in the rabbit TMJ.

Background: Adequate muscle activity is important for the success of oral rehabilitation: it maintains the integrity of the stomatognathic system and is responsible for chewing movements needed to break, crush and grind food.

Objective: To compare muscle activity using electromyography (EMG) while clenching or chewing soft and/or hard foods among individuals with natural dentition (ND) and edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses.

Methods: This review was conducted until March, 2023, and the research question was "Is the muscle activity of edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses similar to that of dentate individuals?" A search strategy was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Lilacs, Embase and manual journal searches.

The use of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive for surgical wound closure has become increasingly popular in recent years and has shown efficacy. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to compare the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate adhesive as a substitute for conventional suture placement after extraction of impacted third molars. The PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane, and gray literature databases were searched for randomized or controlled prospective clinical trials published up to October 2022 that compared the use of cyanoacrylate adhesive and conventional silk suture in third molar surgeries.

Purpose: Wound closure technique is an operative factor that influences early post-operative complications after third molar surgery. This study investigates and compared the effectiveness of two closure techniques, primary closure and healing by second intention of the oblique incision on postsurgical discomfort after mandibular third molar surgery.

Materials And Methods: This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, split mouth controlled trial.

This systematic review answered the guiding question using the PICO system: "What are the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) on alveolar ridge preservation and tissue gain in reconstructive and jaw graft surgery?" Searches were performed in the PubMed|MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and LILACS|bvs databases. In total, 573 articles were found in the initial search, and 564 were evaluated after the removal of duplicates, of which 5 randomized controlled trials met the eligibility criteria and were included 2 studies investigated the effect of A-PRF on the preservation of the bone ridge, 1 study evaluated the tissue repair after tooth extraction with A-PRF, 1 evaluated the peri-implant gap filling with A-PRF-xenograft mixture, and other the A-PRF on the treatment of alveolar osteitis. Advanced-PRF preparation protocol varied between the included studies from 8 to 13 minutes of centrifugation, at 1300 RPM (200 g ).

Article Synopsis
  • Granular Cell Odontogenic Fibroma (GCOF) is a rare type of oral tumor, previously known by various names, and this study aims to collate and summarize existing literature on it, including a new case report.
  • The review included thirty-nine studies detailing fifty-three GCOF cases, primarily affecting middle-aged women and commonly found in the back area of the mandible, with conservative treatment being the preferred method.
  • There is still debate regarding the origin of GCOF, highlighting the need for further research to clarify its histogenesis and clinical behavior.

Statement Of Problem: Immediately loaded mandibular overdentures are clinically acceptable treatment options that have gained popularity because their use shortens the treatment duration. However, whether the immediate loading of dental implants can match the prosthetic events, satisfaction, and quality of life of delayed loading is still unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the prosthetic events, satisfaction, and quality of life of immediate versus delayed loading implants in patients rehabilitated with mandibular overdentures.

Objective: The objective of this study was 2-fold: (1) to describe the rabbit temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anatomy and (2) to provide a detailed, step-by-step description of a minimally invasive approach to perform a standard osteochondral TMJ defect that can be used to investigate the regenerative potential of biomaterials.

Study Design: This study was performed in 2 steps. In the first, a total of 8 rabbit carcasses (n = 16 joints) were used to study the normal TMJ anatomy and histology to develop a minimally invasive approach to access the articulating surface of the condyle to perform a standard osteochondral defect.
