Spectroscopy of correlated electron pairs was employed to investigate the energy dissipation process, as well as the transport and the emission of low-energy electrons on a polymethylmethacrylate surface, providing secondary electron spectra causally related to the energy loss of the primary. Two groups are identified in the cascade of slow electrons, corresponding to different stages in the energy dissipation process. The characteristic lengths for attenuation due to collective excitations and momentum relaxation are quantified for both groups and are found to be distinctly different: λ_{1}=(12±2)  Å and λ_{2}=(62±11)  Å.

Importance: Although active surveillance for patients with low-risk prostate cancer (LRPC) has been recommended for years, its adoption at the population level is often limited.

Objective: To make active surveillance available for patients with LRPC using a research framework and to compare patient characteristics and clinical outcomes between those who receive active surveillance vs radical treatments at diagnosis.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This population-based, prospective cohort study was designed by a large multidisciplinary group of specialists and patients' representatives.

Hydrogel formulations (masks or patches, without tissue support) represent the new frontier for customizable skin beauty and health. The employment of these materials is becoming popular in wound dressing, to speed up the healing process while protecting the affected area, as well as to provide a moisturizing reservoir, control the inflammatory process and the onset of bacterial development. Most of these hydrogels are acrylic-based at present, not biodegradable and potentially toxic, due to acrylic monomers residues.

Background: This study was designed to demonstrate the non-inferiority (NI) in overall survival (OS) of suspension of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) versus maintenance and intermittent versus continuous docetaxel administration in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients.

Patients And Methods: mCRPC patients were randomised to first-line docetaxel with maintenance or suspension of ADT. Patients attaining a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response after four chemotherapy cycles underwent second randomisation to receive continuous or intermittent docetaxel therapy.

Two-particle spectroscopy with correlated electron pairs is used to establish the causal link between the secondary electron spectrum, the (π+σ) plasmon peak, and the unoccupied band structure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The plasmon spectrum is resolved with respect to the involved interband transitions and clearly exhibits final state effects, in particular due to the energy gap between the interlayer resonances along the ΓA direction. The corresponding final state effects can also be identified in the secondary electron spectrum.

Objective: Although there is considerable speculation that family-based socialization processes influence children's safety and risk behaviors, few studies have addressed this important issue. The present study compared the impact of parent practices and teaching about safety on children's current behaviors and their intended future behaviors when they reach adulthood.

Design And Measures: Children 7 to 12 years of age were interviewed and asked to report on their parents' practices and teachings (discussions, expectations for children's behavior) regarding five common safety behaviors.

In January 2001 the Residency Review Committee (RRC) mandated that all psychiatric training programs must demonstrate competency in five forms of psychotherapy. Assessing competency in psychotherapy is a complex and difficult task, with many conceptual and practical issues needing consideration before programs are implemented. Existing competency-based programs can offer some assistance to institutions struggling with this issue.

Background: Falls are a significant problem for older adults. Individuals who have sustained a fall come to the attention of health care providers and are at risk of further falls. To promote the highest quality of care and reduce variation in care, a practice guideline is needed.

This study assessed the association between parental style, family functioning and adolescent well being, contrasting intact families with those of changed configuration. Eight hundred and one grade 10 general level teenagers in 11 high schools of a single educational system were the subjects. Results indicated that the configuration of the family was not the key determinant of effectiveness of family functioning.

The roles of family, peers, and selected social factors in the origins of depression were assessed in a school-based study of adolescents. Social self-efficacy and social support from family and peers were found to be interrelated in their links with depression. Risk factors are delineated and suggestions for preventive intervention are offered.

In this industrial-based study we compared the blood pressure (BP)-lowering effectiveness of relaxation, a beta blocker, and the combined use of these two treatments in 47 untreated, mildly hypertensive blue collar steel workers. Using a randomized two by two factorial design, patients received either nadolol or placebo drug daily, and either a relaxation training or an education program, each lasting 8 weeks. A pre-intervention and post-intervention stress test measured response of heart rate and BP to mental and physical tasks.

Objective: To determine the proportion and characteristics of mild hypertensives who remain normotensive after withdrawal from drug treatment.

Design: Longitudinal descriptive study.

Setting: A university family practice unit (FPU) and a large steel company (DOFASCO) in Hamilton, Ontario.

Evidence for non-pharmacological effects of hypnotics on sleep is presented. This suggests that behavioural variables may be involved in the regulation of sleep onset in insomnia. Chronic 'true' insomnia is described in terms of precipitating events: fixed behavioural patterns which perpetuate it and the disordered timing of electrophysiological and hormonal events.

Insomnia is a public health problem because of its high prevalence, the risk of hypnotic drug abuse, and self medication combined with alcohol and other nonprescription chemicals. Clinical experience has given rise to a descriptive classification of the insomnias many of which are secondary to medical disease. The information now available allows us to suggest a systematic approach to the assessment of insomnia emphasizing its history, events associated with sleep onset, observable behaviour and experience associated with interruptions in sleep.

One objective of psychiatric education can be to help trainees describe and understand major concerns patients experience in their key relationships, inner conflict and sense of self. A precis of major concepts and principles in this area (usually known as psychodynamics) is presented without the metapsychological framework which makes some of the literature difficult to grasp. This is intended to make learning more efficient and to facilitate the formulation of hypotheses about the presence or absence of specific conflicts, and problems in key relationships.

Communication is the essence of the process of psychotherapy. Understanding the parameters of communication can form the foundations for the development of psychotherapeutic skills in the student therapist. Using learning objectives within the context of teaching psychotherapy, the process of communication in individual psychotherapy is explored in this paper.

This paper constitutes an initial attempt to establish specific end-point objectives for the teaching (and learning) of individual psychotherapy skills. A working framework for teaching psychotherapy, which includes intrapsychic as well as interactional phenomena, is articulated. The framework also tries to achieve an integration of basic concepts of psychotherapy and specific skills for clinical practice.
