Article Synopsis
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is linked to issues like emotional instability, impulsivity, and disrupted relationships, influenced by factors such as autonomic nervous system dysregulation and metabolic changes.
  • Research indicates that altered heart rate variability and HPA axis dysregulation, often due to early trauma, increase chronic inflammation and cardiovascular risk among individuals with BPD.
  • A review of 189 studies revealed key insights but had limitations, such as focusing on only one database and excluding non-English articles, suggesting a need for further research on this topic.

Correct nutrition and diet are directly correlated with mental health, functions of the immune system, and gut microbiota composition. Diets with a high content of some nutrients, such as fibers, phytochemicals, and short-chain fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), seem to have an anti-inflammatory and protective action on the nervous system. Among nutraceuticals, supplementation of probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids plays a role in improving symptoms of several mental disorders.

Deficits in social cognition (SC) interfere with recovery in schizophrenia (SZ) and may be related to resting state brain connectivity. This study aimed at assessing the alterations in the relationship between resting state functional connectivity and the social-cognitive abilities of patients with SZ compared to healthy subjects. We divided the brain into 246 regions of interest (ROI) following the Human Healthy Volunteers Brainnetome Atlas.

Geometric isomerism in mechanically interlocked systems-which arises when the axle of a mechanically interlocked molecule is oriented, and the macrocyclic component is facially dissymmetric-can provide enhanced functionality for directional transport and polymerization catalysis. We now introduce a kinetically controlled strategy to control geometric isomerism in [2]rotaxanes. Our synthesis provides the major geometric isomer with high selectivity, broadening synthetic access to such interlocked structures.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and complex mental disorder that traditionally has been found to be more frequent in the female gender in clinical samples. More recently, epidemiological studies have provided conflicting data about the prevalence of borderline disorder in the two genders in community samples. In order to explain this heterogeneity, some authors hypothesized the presence of a bias in the diagnostic criteria thresholds (more prevalent in one gender than another), in the population sampling (community versus clinical), in the instruments of evaluation (clinician versus self-report measures), and in the diagnostic construct of BPD.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative contributions of visual learning and conceptual disorganization to specific metacognitive domains in a sample of outpatients with stable schizophrenia.

Methods: A total of 92 consecutive outpatients with stable schizophrenia were recruited in a cross-sectional study. We analyzed the data with five path analyses based on multiple regressions to analyze the specific effect of visual learning on metacognitive capacity and metacognitive domains and the possible mediating role of conceptual disorganization.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is among the twenty most disabling diseases worldwide. Subjective quality of life, well-being, and satisfaction are core elements to achieving personal recovery from the disorder. Long-acting injectable second-generation antipsychotics (SGA-LAIs) represent a valid therapeutic option for the treatment of SZ as they guarantee good efficacy and adherence to treatment.

Recent evidence supported the notion that add-on group therapy should be provided to individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who already undergo individual psychotherapy. The present 20 week-study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the adjunction of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) to individual interpersonal psychotherapy adapted for BPD - revised (IPT-BPD-R) in comparison with individual IPT-BPD-R alone in a group of BPD patients. In addition, demographical and clinical characteristics that can be considered predictors of response to add-on group therapy were investigated.

Purpose: Thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a specific biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma, and is commonly used to confirm the pulmonary origin of neuroendocrine tumours (NET). The majority of the available data suggest that TTF-1 is favourable prognostic biomarker for lung adenocarcinomas, whereas its role is more conflicting for lung NET. The main aim of this multicenter retrospective study was to investigate the potentially relevant associations between TTF-1 biomarker and clinical and pathological features of the study population, as well as determine TTF-1 prognostic effect on the clinical outcome of the patients.

Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) are innovative clinical treatments exploiting the pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic properties of cells and/or gene(s) with the aim to restore, correct, or modify a biological function in the recipient. ATMPs are heterogeneous medicinal products, developed mainly as individualized and patient-specific treatments, and represent new opportunities for diseases characterized by a high-unmet medical need, including rare, genetic and neurodegenerative disorders, haematological malignancies, cancer, autoimmune, inflammatory and orthopaedic conditions. Into the European Union (EU) market, the first ATMP has been launched in 2009 and, to date, a total of 24 ATMPs have been approved.

Article Synopsis
  • DRIVE was a European public-private partnership launched in 2017 to estimate influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) for public health, conducting studies until the 2021-2022 season.
  • In 2021-2022, multiple studies across several European countries involved extensive data collection from over 1,000 general practitioners and several hospitals, utilizing a test-negative design to assess vaccine effectiveness.
  • Results showed varying IVE estimates, with notable effectiveness in older adults and children, though sample size limitations impacted precision due to low influenza circulation in Europe that season.

Many illness-related factors contribute to the reduction of the real-life functioning observed in people with schizophrenia (SZ). These include the psychopathological dimensions of the disorder such as positive, negative, disorganization, and depressive symptoms as well as impairment in neurocognition, social cognition, and metacognition. The associations between some of these variables change with the duration of illness (DOI), but this aspect was not explored with a network approach.

The relation between meteorological factors and COVID-19 spread remains uncertain, particularly with regard to the role of temperature, relative humidity and solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. To assess this relation, we investigated disease spread within Italy during 2020. The pandemic had a large and early impact in Italy, and during 2020 the effects of vaccination and viral variants had not yet complicated the dynamics.

Schizophrenia is among the fifteen most disabling diseases worldwide. Negative symptoms (NS) are highly prevalent in schizophrenia, negatively affect the functional outcome of the disorder, and their treatment is difficult and rarely specifically investigated. Serotonin-dopamine activity modulators (SDAMs), of which aripiprazole, cariprazine, brexpiprazole, and lumateperone were approved for schizophrenia treatment, represent a possible therapy to reduce NS.

(1) Background: although studies of cognitive functions are still limited in borderline personality disorder (BPD), the initial evidence suggested that BPD patients have deficits of executive functions and social cognition. In addition, patients who report physical and psychic traumatic experiences in childhood and adolescence show considerable neurocognitive impairment and severe BPD symptoms. The present study has a twofold aim: (1) to evaluate the differences in neurocognitive performances between BPD patients and healthy controls and (2) to verify in the BPD patients group whether neurocognitive deficits have the role of mediating the effect of early traumas on BPD psychopathology.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 continues to have a serious impact on public health worldwide. Most patients develop mild to moderate symptoms and recover without requiring special treatment, but up to 15% develop severe (dyspnea, hypoxia, lung involvement) or critical symptoms (respiratory failure, septic shock, thromboembolism, multiorgan dysfunction). Although vaccination is having a substantial impact on case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths, there remains a need for new effective treatments against COVID-19.

Intrinsic motivation was described as the mental process of pursuing a task or an action because it is enjoyable or interesting in itself and was found to play a central role in the determination of the functional outcome of schizophrenia. Neurocognition is one of the most studied determinants of intrinsic motivation in clinically stable schizophrenia while little is known about the role of insight. Following this need we decided to focus on the contribution of different aspects of insight and of neurocognition to intrinsic motivation in a large sample (n = 176) of patients with stable schizophrenia.
