Yet the differential roles and biological functions of co-targeting transcription factors is poorly understood. In melanoma, three highly-related transcription factors are co-expressed: The mTORC1-regulated TFEB and TFE3, that are key effectors of a wide range of metabolic and microenvironmental cues; and MITF, that controls melanoma phenotypic identity.

Elevated cell-free hemoglobin: A novel early biomarker following traumatic injury.

Background: Cell-free hemoglobin (CFH) and free heme are potent mediators of endotheliopathy and organ injury in sepsis, but their roles in other hemolytic pathologies are not well-defined. A prime example is trauma where early hemolysis may initiate damage and predict outcome. Here, we investigated the presence of plasma CFH, heme, and their major scavengers after traumatic injury.

Crural Diaphragm Density in Respiratory Complications after Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Lobectomy.

Disparities in the Occurrence of Long-Term Effects of Bone Marrow Suppression after Treatment in Adolescent Young Adult Breast Cancer Survivors.

Background: Many adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with breast cancer (BC) receive adjuvant therapy as initial treatment, with long-term bone marrow suppression as a potential complication, but no studies have evaluated the impact of race/ethnicity on the development of bone marrow suppression in AYA BC survivors.

Patients And Methods: Female patients ages 15-39 years diagnosed with BC (2006-2018) and surviving ≥ 2 years were identified from the California Cancer Registry and linked to statewide hospitalization data. We estimated the cumulative incidence of developing late effects of bone marrow suppression, such as leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding, and infection/sepsis, during hospital discharge diagnoses present ≥ 2 years after diagnosis.

Fast-moving stars around an intermediate-mass black hole in ω Centauri.

Black holes have been found over a wide range of masses, from stellar remnants with masses of 5-150 solar masses (M), to those found at the centres of galaxies with M > 10M. However, only a few debated candidate black holes exist between 150M and 10M. Determining the population of these intermediate-mass black holes is an important step towards understanding supermassive black hole formation in the early universe.

In this context, we describe the health measures undertaken by AcToVax4NAM Consortium Countries (Cyprus-Germany-Greece-Italy-Malta-Poland-Romania-Spain) to prevent Vaccine-Preventable Disease (VPD) outbreaks in the context of mass movements of populations that resulted from the crisis in Ukraine. (2) We collected information on the vaccinations offered to Ukrainians in the Consortium Countries.

Pre-Pandemic Predictivity of Anxious-Depressive Symptoms in Post-Surgical Traumatic Distress in Hysterectomy for Benign Disease and COVID-19 Outbreak: A Case-Control Study.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic led to several needed containment measures that conditioned the onset of depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the population. These symptoms, especially if not diagnosed and treated, can also occur in patients undergoing medical care or surgery, with a high impact on people's lives and causing low adherence to treatment. The study evaluates whether the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worsened the onset of post-surgical distress and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a population undergoing hysterectomy for benign disease during the pandemic era, comparing it with a population with the same characteristics but recruited before COVID-19.

Perampanel as an Add-On Therapy in Patients with Refractory Status Epilepticus and Postanoxic Encephalopathy: A Real-Life Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Data on the efficacy of perampanel in refractory status epilepticus (RSE) and postanoxic encephalopathy (PAE) are limited; its use in such conditions is currently off-label.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutive adult patients with RSE, including PAE, exhibiting electroencephalographic patterns indicative of status epilepticus who were treated at our center (January 2018 to December 2022) with assessment of clinical and electroencephalographic outcomes.

Results: Thirty-six patients were included in the study, of whom 29 had nonanoxic RSE and 7 had PAE.

Do serial troponins predict the need for cardiac evaluation in trauma patients after ground-level fall?

Purpose: Troponin T levels are routinely checked in trauma patients after experiencing a ground-level fall to identify potential cardiac causes of syncope. An elevated initial troponin prompts serial testing until the level peaks. However, the high sensitivity of the test may lead to repeat testing that is of little clinical value.

Previous studies have documented that FOLFOX and XELOX therapies negatively impact the metabolism of skeletal muscle and extra-muscle districts. This pilot study tested whether three-month FOLFOX or XELOX therapy produced changes in plasma amino acid levels (PAAL) (an estimation of whole-body amino acid metabolism) and in plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid hyper oxidation. Fourteen ambulatory, resected patients with colorectal cancer scheduled to receive FOLFOX (n = 9) or XELOX (n = 5) therapy, after overnight fasting, underwent peripheral venous blood sampling, to determine PAAL and MDA before, during, and at the end of three-month therapy.

ERS International Congress 2023: highlights from the Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation Assembly.
