Transplacental transmission of bluetongue virus has been shown previously for the North European strain of serotype 8 (BTV-8) and for tissue culture or chicken egg-adapted vaccine strains but not for field strains of other serotypes. In this study, pregnant ewes (6 per group) were inoculated with either field or rescued strains of BTV-2 and BTV-8 in order to determine the ability of these viruses to cross the placental barrier. In previous studies, CDV has been shown to significantly reduce the clinical severity and the viral shedding in primary caprine herpesvirus type-1 (CpHV-1) infection in goats. CpHV-1 is an alpha-herpesvirus showing many biological similarities with human herpesvirus type-2 (HHV-2); therefore, studies conducted on the CpHV-1 goat model could provide useful information on the pathogenesis, therapy and prevention of HHV-2 infection in humans.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies directed to whole Caprine herpesvirus 1 (CpHV-1). Sera from 248 goats were obtained from CpHV-1-free and CpHV-1-infected flocks and were subjected to both IgG ELISA and serum neutralization (SN) assays, with the latter considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of CpHV-1 infection. In flocks where CpHV-1 infection was detected, 57 sera were negative by the SN and the ELISA tests and 97 sera were positive with both tests.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were developed to detect caprine herpervirus-1 (CpHV-1)-specific IgG1 and IgG2 in sera from 43 naturally infected goats. The antigenic relationships among the original canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and the variants CPV-2a, -2b, and -2c were evaluated. Cross-antigenic evaluation revealed clear differences among the CPV variants, which were more appreciable by serum neutralization (SN) than by hemagglutination inhibition. Antigenic differences were found mostly between the original CPV-2 and the variants, but they were also observed among the variants CPV-2a, -2b, and -2c.

Methods: The antiviral activity of cidofovir was assessed in goats infected experimentally, using various therapeutic protocols.

Results: Topic administration of cidofovir 1% cream prevented the onset of virus-induced genital lesions and drastically reduced virus shedding.

Caprine herpesvirus 1 provides a unique virus-animal model to investigate potential tools applicable for the therapy and prophylaxis of genital herpesvirus infections of humans. In order to evaluate the efficacy of mucosal immunization in the goat model, an inactivated CpHV-1 vaccine was adjuvated with the enzymatically inactive mutant of the heat-labile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli, LTK63, and used to immunize goats by the vaginal route, by administering two doses at a 3-week interval. The mucosal vaccine was safe, as neither local nor systemic reactions were associated with the vaccine administration.

Diarrheic fecal specimens collected from porcine herds were screened for the presence of group C rotaviruses using a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. A total of 188 samples were tested and 54 were positive. When compiled these data with diagnostic results on group A rotaviruses and enteric caliciviruses we found that all but 5 group C rotavirus positive samples contained at least one additional virus.
