Alloprosthetic composite is a suitable reconstruction after periacetabular tumor resection.

Background: Resection of a tumor of the pelvis is most disabling when the acetabulum is excised and a durable reconstruction of the defect is hard to achieve. All available methods are associated with frequent complications. Few large series have been published, and fewer have focused entirely on complete resections of the acetabulum.

18F-FDG PET response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma are different.

Objective: Ewing sarcoma (ES) and osteosarcoma (OS) have different biological characteristics and respond differently to chemotherapy. We reviewed (18)F-FDG PET imaging characteristics of ES and OS patients at baseline and following treatment to determine whether this biological variation is reflected in their imaging phenotype.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of ES and OS patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery was done, correlating PET results with histologic response to chemotherapy.

Virtual surgical pathology in underdeveloped countries: The Zambia Project.

Only 1 surgical pathology laboratory is available in Zambia, a country with a population of 12 million people. Since 2004 the Italian association of pathologists Patologi Oltre Frontiera has been working to create a virtual laboratory through the use of telemedicine. The project has involved staining histologic preparations on site, with the interpretation of imaged slides performed abroad through telepathology.

Mesenchymal stem cells and platelet lysate in fibrin or collagen scaffold promote non-cemented hip prosthesis integration.

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and platelet lysate (PL) seeded in a fibrin or collagen scaffold could improve the new bone (NB) formation around an uncemented hip prosthesis stem in a sheep model. In vitro expanded MSC were suspended in PL and either mixed with collagen or fibrin gel as delivery vehicle. The cell-gel composites were inserted inside the femoral canal, then the prosthesis was press-fit inserted inside the femur.

An Early Diagnosis of Gastroepiploic Arterial Aneurysm during a Routine Abdominal Ultrasound Study.

Gastroepiploic arterial aneurysm (GEAA) is a rare condition, but the rupture risk is very high. We report the case of a patient with incidental finding of GEAA during US examination. The diagnosis was confirmed by a computed tomography and an angiographic study.

Pulmonary diseases associated with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Among the extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases, those involving the lung are relatively rare. However, there is a wide array of such manifestations, spanning from drug-related pathologies to airway disease, fistulas, granulomatous diseases, autoimmune and thromboembolic disorders. Although infrequent, people dealing with inflammatory bowel diseases must be aware of these conditions, sometimes life-threatening, to avoid further impairment of the health status of the patients and to alleviate their symptoms by prompt recognition and treatment.

A web-based versus paper questionnaire on alcohol and tobacco in adolescents.

Objective: Our study was aimed at comparing health behavior data collected from a Web-based self-administered questionnaire (Web SAQ) versus a paper-and-pencil self-administered questionnaire and assessing the feasibility of the application.

Materials And Methods: One hundred and ninety (n = 190) pupils (ages 14-16 years) of senior high schools anonymously completed a questionnaire, with demographics and queries about lifestyle, alcohol, and tobacco use. For each class, the adolescents were randomly assigned to complete either the paper version of the questionnaire or the equivalent Web-based one, which used a customized platform developed for the purposes of this survey.

Colonoscopic findings in coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet.

Background: to date, there are few data on colonoscopic findings in patients with celiac disease, and most of these obtained in patients with iron deficiency anaemia.

Aims: we assessed colonoscopic findings in unselected patients with coeliac disease, since there are no studies available also considering morphological aspects, and there is literature suggestion of increased prevalence of colorectal tumours.

Material And Methods: colonoscopies with multiple biopsies were retrospectively analyzed in 42 coeliac disease patients on gluten-free diet above age 40; 16 had clinical or laboratory features of iron deficiency anaemia.

Wolfram syndrome and WFS1 gene.

Wolfram syndrome (WS) (MIM 222300) is a rare multisystem neurodegenerative disorder of autosomal recessive inheritance, also known as DIDMOAD (diabetes insipidus, insulin-deficient diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy and deafness). A Wolfram gene (WFS1) has been mapped to chromosome 4p16.1 which encodes an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane-embedded protein.

Injection of demineralized bone matrix with bone marrow concentrate improves healing in unicameral bone cyst.

Background: Unicameral bone cysts are benign lesions that usually spontaneously regress with skeletal maturity; however, the high risk of pathologic fractures often justifies treatment that could reinforce a weakened bone cortex. Various treatments have been proposed but there is no consensus regarding the best procedure.

Questions/purposes: We compared the healing rates and failures of two methods of cure based on multiple injections of corticosteroid or a single injection of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) in association with bone marrow concentrate (BMC).

Ovine catarrhal fever (Bluetongue): analysis of Culicoides species in seropositive farms.

Bluetongue (BT) is an orbiviral disease of wild and domestic ruminants, mainly sheep. In Sicily, the first Bluetongue outbreak occurred in October 2000; there have been 76 recorded outbreaks so far. The National Surveillance Plan, based on European Union Commission Decision 138/2001/CE, establishes serological and entomological surveys.

Osteogenic protein-1 associated with mesenchymal stem cells promote bone allograft integration.

Limited incorporation and modest bone remodeling can cause allograft failure. We investigated whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and osteogenic protein-1 (OP-1) can improve allograft integration. A 3-cm full-size intercalary bone defect was created in the mid-diaphysis of the metatarsal bone of the sheep and it was replaced with an allograft alone (control group), or with MSCs (MSC group), OP-1 (OP-1 group), or MSCs and OP-1 (MSC + OP-1 group).

TLR4 and NOD2/CARD15 genetic polymorphisms and their possible role in gastric carcinogenesis.

Bone morphogenetic proteins and tissue engineering: future directions.

As long as bone repair and regeneration is considered as a complex clinical condition, the administration of more than one factor involved in fracture healing might be necessary. The effectiveness or not of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in association with other growth factors and with mesenchymal stem cells in bone regeneration for fracture healing and bone allograft integration is of great interest to the scientific community. In this study we point out possible future developments in BMPs, concerning research and clinical applications.

Moraxella catarrhalis-specific Th1 cells in BAL fluids of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients airway mucosa is infiltrated by macrophages and T lymphocytes, potentially reactive to pathogens. We studied the antigen-specificity and the effector functions of in vivo activated T lymphocytes isolated from BAL (Bronchoalveolar lavage) of 5 Moraxella catarrhalis (Mc)-infected and 5 Mc-non-infected COPD patients. Mc-specific T cells were detected only in BAL or peripheral blood of Moraxella catarrhalis-infected patients.

Co-inheritance of Hb Hershey [beta70(E14) Ala-->Gly] and Hb La Pommeraie [beta133(H11)Val-->Met] in a Sicilian subject.

Objectives: This report represents the first observation in Sicily of two rare beta-globin gene variants, Hb Hershey [beta70(E14) Ala-->Gly] and Hb La Pommeraie [beta133(H11)Val-->Met], found in a 35-year-old male patient from Messina, in the north-east of Sicily during population screening for hemoglobinopathies.

Methods: The occurrence of the Hb variants was assessed by cation exchange chromatography while complete blood counts were obtained using automatic cell counters. Red cell lysates were analyzed by electrophoresis at alkaline and acid pH.

Renal hilus paraganglioma: a case report and brief review.

Paraganglioma is a rare tumour that originates from any paraganglia. Among extra-adrenal paraganglioma, renal hilus is a rare location. The authors report a case of a 43-year-old female who was admitted for evaluation of a renal mass detected incidentally by ultrasound imaging.

Surgical treatment of grade I central chondrosarcoma.

Unlabelled: The grade of chondrosarcoma relates to the likelihood of local recurrence and metastases. Many Grade I chondrosarcomas behave benignly if aggressively, and the question arises regarding whether wide resection is essential to control the disease. We therefore asked whether intralesional surgery also could be extended to Grade I chondrosarcomas without an increase in recurrence.

We show that HSCs and HPCs have a comparable pattern of expression of TLR transcripts characterized by the predominance of TLR1, -2, -3, -4 and -6.
