Childhood cancer survivorship care: A qualitative study of healthcare providers' professional preferences.

Purpose: Childhood cancer survivorship care is a complex specialty, though it is increasingly being integrated into the general practitioner's (GP) remit. Establishing the essential components of tertiary- and primary-led care, to maximize the benefits and overcome the challenges inherent to each, is essential to inform the development of survivor-centered, sustainable care models.

Methods: We used the qualitative principles of semi-structured interviewing, verbatim transcription, coding (supported by NVivo12) and thematic analysis, to collect and evaluate the views and preferences of pediatric oncologists, survivorship nurse coordinators, and GPs currently caring for childhood cancer survivors.

As frequently segregated and exploitative environments, workplaces are important sites in driving health and mortality disparities by race and ethnicity. Because many worksites are federally regulated, US workplaces also offer opportunities for effectively intervening to mitigate these disparities. Development of policies for worker safety and equity should be informed by evidence, including results from research studies that use death records and other sources of administrative data.

Balance and Cognition in Male Collegiate Lacrosse Players.

Concussion screening among collegiate lacrosse athletes is a major safety priority. Although attention has been directed at concussion management following injury, less is known about the association between cognition and balance during preseason screening. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between balance and neurocognition among collegiate male lacrosse players and to examine predictive determinants of postural stability.

Microbiome dysbiosis is a feature of diabetes, but how microbial products influence insulin production is poorly understood. We report the mechanism of BefA, a microbiome-derived protein that increases proliferation of insulin-producing β cells during development in gnotobiotic zebrafish and mice. BefA disseminates systemically by multiple anatomic routes to act directly on pancreatic islets.

Chemoradiation therapy alters the PD-L1 score in locoregional recurrent squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck.

PD-L1 testing guides therapeutic decision-making for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We sought to understand whether chemoradiation therapy (CRT) influences the PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) and other biomarkers of response to immunotherapy. PD-L1 expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry, and bulk RNA sequencing was performed on 146 HNSCC patients (65 primary sites, 50 paired local recurrences, and 31 paired regional recurrences).

Negative target stimuli do not influence cross-modal auditory distraction.

The present study served to test whether emotion modulates auditory distraction in a serial-order reconstruction task. If auditory distraction results from an attentional trade-off between the targets and distractors, auditory distraction should decrease when attention is focused on targets with high negative arousal. Two experiments (with a total N of 284 participants) were conducted to test whether auditory distraction is influenced by target emotion.

Indwelling stents cause obstruction and induce ureteral injury and fibrosis in a porcine model.

Objectives: To investigate global changes in ureters at the transcriptional, translational and functional levels, both while stents are indwelling and after removal and recovery, and to study the effects of targeting pathways that play a potential role.

Methods: Pig ureters were stented for varying amounts of time (48 h, 72 h, 14 days) and the impact on peristalsis, dilatation and hydronephrosis were assessed. RNAseq, proteomic, histological and smooth muscle (SM) function analyses were performed on ureteric and kidney tissues to assess changes induced by stenting and recovery.

Effects of a Novel Beta Lactam Compound, MC-100093, on the Expression of Glutamate Transporters/Receptors and Ethanol Drinking Behavior of Alcohol-Preferring Rats.

Chronic ethanol exposure affects the glutamatergic system in several brain reward regions including the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Our laboratory has shown that chronic exposure to ethanol reduced the expression of glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1) and cystine/glutamate exchanger (xCT) and, as a result, increased extracellular glutamate concentrations in the NAc of alcohol-preferring (P) rats. Moreover, previous studies from our laboratory reported that chronic ethanol intake altered the expression of certain metabotropic glutamate receptors in the brain.

The complexity of human milk-feeding behaviours may not be captured using simpler definitions of "exclusive" and "non-exclusive" breastfeeding. New definitions have been suggested to describe variation in these behaviours more fully but have not been widely applied. We applied the new definitions to data derived from 3-day human milk-feeding diaries.

CD8+ Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte Abundance Is a Positive Prognostic Indicator in Nasopharyngeal Cancer.

Purpose: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) are immune cell populations found within tumors, critical in the antigen-specific host immune response. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the prognostic significance of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ TILs in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).

Experimental Design: Immune cell infiltration was quantified in NPC samples (n = 50) using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data based on rearranged T-cell receptor (TCR) reads and the Estimation of Stromal and Immune cells in malignant tumors using expression data (ESTIMATE) immune score tool.

Adaptive immune responses in patients requiring revision after total knee arthroplasty.

Dissatisfaction occurs in nearly 20% of patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA); however, there remains only limited understanding of the biologic mechanisms that may contribute to suboptimal postoperative outcomes requiring revision surgery. Expansion of effector T and B cells, could promote an abnormal healing response via local or peripheral immune system mechanisms and contribute to inferior outcomes necessitating revision TKA. In this pilot study, we hypothesized that patients suffering from complications of arthrofibrosis or instability may exhibit differences in adaptive immune function.

Experimental validation of a multinomial processing tree model for analyzing eyewitness identification decisions.

To improve police protocols for lineup procedures, it is helpful to understand the processes underlying eyewitness identification performance. The two-high threshold (2-HT) eyewitness identification model is a multinomial processing tree model that measures four latent cognitive processes on which eyewitness identification decisions are based: two detection-based processes (the detection of culprit presence and absence) and two non-detection-based processes (biased and guessing-based selection). The model takes into account the full 2 × 3 data structure of lineup procedures, that is, suspect identifications, filler identifications and rejections in both culprit-present and culprit-absent lineups.

Medical, behavioural and social preconception and interconception risk factors among pregnancy planning and recently pregnant Canadian women.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to describe the clustering of medical, behavioural and social preconception and interconception health risk factors and determine demographic factors associated with these risk clusters among Canadian women.

Design: Cross-sectional data were collected via an online questionnaire assessing a range of preconception risk factors. Prevalence of each risk factor and the total number of risk factors present was calculated.

Moving beyond the T cell synapse for combination neoadjuvant immunotherapy in head and neck cancer.

Immunotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a narrative review.

Objective: Provide a narrative review of the literature describing immunological concepts and novel approaches in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: In 2016, two anti-PD1 antibodies, nivolumab and pembrolizumab, were shown to improve overall survival in patients with recurrent/metastatic HNSCC and were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the second line, cisplatin-resistant setting, although the overall response rates were only about 15%. More recently, pembrolizumab was approved for use in the first-line R/M setting as monotherapy in patients with CPS >1 or in combination with chemotherapy regardless of PD-L1 expression.

Effects of N-terminal Acetylation on the Aggregation of Disease-related α-synuclein Variants.

Mutations in the SNCA gene, which encodes the protein α-synuclein, have been linked with early onset Parkinson's disease. The exact nature of this association, however, is still poorly understood. To investigate this problem, we started from the observation that α-synuclein is constitutively N-terminally acetylated, a post-translational modification that alters the charge and structure of α-synuclein molecules and affects their interaction with lipid membranes, as well as their aggregation process.

An Exercise-Induced Metabolic Shield in Distant Organs Blocks Cancer Progression and Metastatic Dissemination.

Unlabelled: Exercise prevents cancer incidence and recurrence, yet the underlying mechanism behind this relationship remains mostly unknown. Here we report that exercise induces the metabolic reprogramming of internal organs that increases nutrient demand and protects against metastatic colonization by limiting nutrient availability to the tumor, generating an exercise-induced metabolic shield. Proteomic and ex vivo metabolic capacity analyses of murine internal organs revealed that exercise induces catabolic processes, glucose uptake, mitochondrial activity, and GLUT expression.

Coping with high advertising exposure: a source-monitoring perspective.

Consumers are exposed to large amounts of advertising every day. One way to avoid being manipulated is to monitor the sources of persuasive messages. In the present study it was tested whether high exposure to advertising affects the memory and guessing processes underlying source attributions.

Impact of unilateral hearing loss in early development.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to provide an update on current literature as it relates to the impact of unilateral hearing loss for the pediatric population.

Recent Findings: Current studies further corroborate past research findings which reveal the potential consequences of unilateral hearing loss on spatial hearing, language, and neurocognitive functioning. Deficits among children with unilateral hearing loss may parallel those seen in children with bilateral hearing loss, further challenging historic views that hearing in one ear in childhood is sufficient for normal development.

Social determinants of mental health in Italy: the role of education in the comparison of migrant and Italian residents.

Mental health is impacted by social, economic, and environmental factors, the Social Determinants of Health (SDH). Migrants experiencing precarious living and working conditions may be more at risk of poor mental health than the majority population.This paper aims to evaluate the relationship of educational attainment and other SDH with depressive symptoms among the resident population, including Italians and migrants.
