In recent decades, EDs have becoming increasingly overcrowded, leading to longer pre-triage waiting times for patients. E-triage interventions like kiosks have been proposed as a solution to overcrowding.

Purpose Of Review: Kidney disease is present in almost half of Canadian patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and it is also the most common first cardiorenal manifestation of T2D. Despite clear guidelines for testing, opportunities are being missed to identify kidney diseases, and many Canadians are therefore not receiving the best available treatments. This has become even more important given recent clinical trials demonstrating improvements in both kidney and cardiovascular (CV) endpoints with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and a nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, finerenone.

Ethene Hydroformylation Catalyzed by Rhodium Dispersed with Zinc or Cobalt in Silanol Nests of Dealuminated Zeolite Beta.

Catalysts for hydroformylation of ethene were prepared by grafting Rh into nests of ≡SiOZn-OH or ≡SiOCo-OH species prepared in dealuminated BEA zeolite. X-ray absorption spectra and infrared spectra of adsorbed CO were used to characterize the dispersion of Rh. The Rh dispersion was found to increase markedly with increasing M/Rh (M = Zn or Co) ratio; further increases in Rh dispersion occurred upon use for ethene hydroformylation catalysis.

Spatial transcriptomics analysis of neoadjuvant cabozantinib and nivolumab in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma identifies independent mechanisms of resistance and recurrence.

Novel immunotherapy combination therapies have improved outcomes for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but responses are limited to a subset of patients and recurrence can also occur. Little is known about the inter- and intra-tumor heterogeneity in cellular signaling networks within the HCC tumor microenvironment (TME) that underlie responses to modern systemic therapy. We applied spatial transcriptomics (ST) profiling to characterize the tumor microenvironment in HCC resection specimens from a clinical trial of neoadjuvant cabozantinib, a multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor that primarily blocks VEGF, and nivolumab, a PD-1 inhibitor in which 5 out of 15 patients were found to have a pathologic response.

Introduction: Arthroscopic labral procedures are frequently undertaken in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). The role of arthroscopic femoral neck osteoplasty is well established, but less is known about labral procedures. This study evaluates the midterm efficacy and feasibility of arthroscopic osteoplasty with concomitant labral debridement for cam impingement in active adults.

Alcohol consumption in adolescence causes multiple acute negative changes in neural and behavioral function that persist well into adulthood and possibly throughout life. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and dorsal hippocampus are critical for executive function and memory and are especially vulnerable to adolescent ethanol exposure. We have reported that astrocytes, particularly in the mPFC, change both in morphology and synaptic proximity during adolescence.

Introduction: In order to understand human hearing, it helps to understand how the ears of lower vertebrates, like, for instance, lizards, function. A key feature in common is that the ears of both humans and lizards emit faint, pure tones known as spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs). More than four decades after their discovery, the mechanism underlying these emissions is still imperfectly understood, although it is known that they are important for improving the sensitivity and sharpness of hearing.

Sedentary Behaviour-A Target for the Prevention and Management of Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is highly prevalent and can lead to disability and premature mortality. Sedentary behaviour, defined as a low energy expenditure while sitting or lying down, has been identified as an independent risk factor for CVD. This article discusses (1) the association of total sedentary time and patterns of accumulating sedentary time with CVD risk markers, CVD incidence and mortality; (2) acute experimental evidence regarding the acute effects of reducing and breaking up sedentary time on CVD risk markers; and (3) the effectiveness of longer-term sedentary behaviour interventions on CVD risk.

Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure enhances adult stress effects in male rats.

Binge patterns of alcohol use, prevalent among adolescents, are associated with a higher probability of developing alcohol use disorders (AUD) and other psychiatric disorders, like anxiety and depression. Additionally, adverse life events strongly predict AUD and other psychiatric disorders. As such, the combined fields of stress and AUD have been well established, and animal models indicate that both binge-like alcohol exposure and stress exposure elevate anxiety-like behaviors.

Outcomes, Return to Sport, and Failures of MPFL Reconstruction Using Autografts in Children and Adolescents with Recurrent Patellofemoral Instability: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: This study systematically reviews and updates the current evidence on the outcomes of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction using autografts in children and adolescents with recurrent patellofemoral instability. The outcomes of interest were improvements in patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs), return to sport rates, and the rates of surgical failure.

Methods: This systematic review was performed according to the 2020 PRISMA guidelines.

Magnetic actuation holds promise for wirelessly controlling small, magnetic surgical tools and may enable the next generation of ultra minimally invasive surgical robotic systems. Precise torque and force exertion are required for safe surgical operations and accurate state control. Dipole field estimation models perform well far from electromagnets but yield large errors near coils.

COVID-19 Adaptations for Biomedical Teaching and Assessment Within the Undergraduate Dental Curriculum.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the provision of teaching and assessment on the undergraduate dental programme in many institutions worldwide, and for a prolonged period resulted in the cessation of face-to-face teaching. This resulted in significant changes in the way that didactic and preclinical skills have been taught and required novel thinking to overcome the issues that COVID-19 restrictions presented.Dentistry is a very practical subject and at this institution, the University of Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, we had to quickly develop new ways of teaching that allowed us to cover teaching and assessment of the required Intended Learning Outcomes.

Insights into Parental Care from Studies on Non-mammalian Vertebrates.

Parental care has attracted attention from both proximate and ultimate perspectives. While understanding the adaptive significance of care has been the focus of work in diverse organisms in behavioral ecology, most of what we know about the proximate mechanisms underlying parental care behavior comes from studies in mammals. Although studies on mammals have greatly improved our understanding of care, viewing parental care solely through a mammalian lens can limit our understanding.

Recently published single-cell sequencing data from individual human sperm (=41,189; 969-3377 cells from each of 25 donors) offer an opportunity to investigate questions of inheritance with improved statistical power, but require new methods tailored to these extremely low-coverage data (∼0.01× per cell). To this end, we developed a method, named rhapsodi, that leverages sparse gamete genotype data to phase the diploid genomes of the donor individuals, impute missing gamete genotypes, and discover meiotic recombination breakpoints, benchmarking its performance across a wide range of study designs.

Allografts as alternative to autografts in primary posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: Following posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) rupture, autografts and allografts are routinely used for its reconstruction. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of allografts for primary PCL reconstruction, comparing them to autografts in terms of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), functional tests, and complications.

Methods: This study followed the PRISMA guidelines.

Background: Technology-aided rehabilitation is well established in the field of neurologic rehabilitation. Despite the widespread availability, the development of technology-based interventions that incorporate perspectives of the people who will use them is lacking.

Objectives: This qualitative study aims to understand how people with chronic motor incomplete cervical spinal cord injury view rehabilitation technology to improve upper extremity function and neuromuscular recovery to inform future intervention development.
