Untreated HCV mono and HCV/HIV coinfected women have lower degrees of liver fibrosis (LF) compared to men. Direct acting antiviral (DAA) therapy attains viral eradication in > 90% of patients with progressive LF decline in parallel. Gender-related differences in LF regression in the long term assessed by non-invasive liver fibrosis markers (NILFM) in HCV mono and HCV/HIV coinfected after DAA treatment have not been explored so far.

Introduction: Standard therapy for HIV treatment has consisted of two nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) paired with a third agent. Use of two-drug regimens (2DR) has been considered for selected patients in part to avoid toxicities associated with the use of NRTIs. This study aimed to compare the real-world outcomes of integrase inhibitor (INSTI)-based three-drug regimens (3DR) versus 2DR of dolutegravir (DTG) + rilpivirine (RPV) or DTG + lamivudine (3TC).

Long term liver fibrosis (LF) changes and their best -monitoring non-invasive markers (NILFM) after effective anti-HCV DAA therapy are little- known. Matrix-metalloproteases (MMPs) and their tissue-inhibitors (TIMPs) are pivotal in liver inflammation repair. Their plasma levels might assess long-term LF changes after therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 1,325 participants, 28.6% tested positive for HCV antibodies, while only 2.2% had active HCV infections, showing a dramatic decline in rates from previous years due to increased treatment uptake.
  • * Despite the heightened use of direct-acting antiviral agents leading to lower infection rates, a notable prevalence of HCV-related cirrhosis still existed, affecting 5.4% of the population studied.

Evidence from clinical practice on the effects of switching from emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF) to emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (F/TAF)-based triple-therapy (TT) regimens on renal parameters is limited. This retrospective analysis evaluated the effects on renal function of switching from F/TDF to F/TAF-based TT regimens with no change in third agent among people living with HIV (PLWH). Data were from a multicenter Spanish PLWH cohort.

BackgroundRecent and reliable estimates on the prevalence of coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Europe are lacking.AimLeveraged on a study designed to assess HIV/HCV coinfection prevalence, we assessed the prevalence of HIV/HBV coinfection in Spain in 2018 and compared the results with five similar studies performed since 2002.MethodsThis cross-sectional prevalence study was carried out in 43 centres, and patients were selected using simple random sampling.

Background: Since 1996, the standard of care (SOC) therapy for HIV treatment has consisted of a backbone of two nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) paired with a third agent. Use of two-drug combinations (2DC) has been considered for selected patients to avoid toxicities associated with the use of NRTIs. This study aimed to compare the real-world outcomes of integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-containing triple therapy (TT) to dolutegravir- (DTG) and/or boosted protease inhibitor (bPI)-based 2DC in a large Spanish cohort of HIV patients.

Objectives: Sex differences in adult cellulitis, a frequent cause of hospitalization, have not been analyzed. These differences were investigated in a large cellulitis series.

Methods: This was a prospective observational study of 606 Spanish hospitalized cellulitis patients.

This study evaluated whether the interval from the first clinic visit until the start of antiretroviral treatment (ART) was correlated with common parameters of immunological recovery among patients with early HIV infection (EHI).We reviewed the medical records of patients with EHI who started ART using integrase strand-transfer inhibitors (ISTIs) within the first 6 months after diagnosis. Simple linear regression analyses were performed to determine whether the interval from the first visit to the start of ART was correlated with 1-year changes in CD4+ cell count, CD8+ cell count, CD4+ percentage, and CD4+/CD8+ ratio.

Background: Cellulitis is a frequent cause of hospital admission of adult patients. Increasing prevalence of multiresistant microorganisms, comorbidities, predisposing factors and medical and surgical therapies might affect cellulitis response and recurrence rate.

Methods: Prospective and observational study of 606 adult patients with cellulitis admitted to several Spanish hospitals.

Background: We assessed the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C virus (HCV-Abs) and active HCV infection in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Spain in 2016 and compared the results with those of similar studies performed in 2002, 2009, and 2015.

Methods: The study was performed in 43 centers during October-November 2016. The sample was estimated for an accuracy of 2% and selected by proportional allocation and simple random sampling.

Objectives: To describe the population targeted for the rapid HIV testing program delivered via socio-culturally adapted services in primary care centers and to assess factors associated with uptake of first-time testing.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. We analyzed consultations between April 29, 2010 and May 31, 2012.

Background: The course over time of different fibrosis parameters in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients who did not suppress HCV during anti-HCV therapy, and in patients who suppressed HCV but relapsed after treatment discontinuation is unclear.

Methods: A total of 248 patients were included in the study (81 non-responders, 49 relapsers, and 118 control, untreated patients). Four primary non-invasive fibrosis indices (transient elastometry, APRI, Forns, and FIB4), as well as other fibrosis parameters, were evaluated in each group at baseline, at the end of anti-HCV therapy and at the end of follow-up (median 39.

To evaluate the course of liver fibrosis, 328 HIV-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients (210 HCV treated and 118 HCV untreated) were followed-up for 38-42 months. Liver fibrosis was assessed by biopsy or elastometry at baseline and by elastometry afterward, in addition to other noninvasive indexes. A combined liver stiffness stage (LSS) was established and evaluated over time.

Background: Reliable non-invasive methods for the evaluation of liver fibrosis are desirable, and the risk factors associated with fibrosis are not fully identified.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of a cohort of 805 HIV-HCV-coinfected patients with active HCV replication, most (95.2%) of whom were intravenous drug users, was conducted.

Objective And Methods: In a cross-sectional study, based on a cohort composed of HIV-infected patients of fifteen tertiary level institutions of Spain, the main data of the entire cohort are described, characteristics of patients with or without hepatitis C coinfection are compared, and the possible association of hepatitis C virus coinfection with socioeconomic, HIV-related, and hepatitis B-related variables is assessed.

Results: A total of 4,709 patients are studied. Median of age is 37 years, 78.

As osteomyelitis (OM) induces the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines and IL-1 mediates bone resorption by osteoclasts we determined if there is an association between certain common polymorphisms of the genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1 alpha and beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha) and OM in adults. The IL-1 alpha (-889) TT genotype was significantly more frequent among 52 OM patients than in 109 healthy controls (13/52, [25.0%] vs.
