Article Synopsis
  • - Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, with a global prevalence of around 1.4%, but limited studies have been done in Latin American populations like Colombia.
  • - This study aimed to assess CD marker prevalence in 228 Colombian blood donors, using tests for specific antibodies (IgA anti-TTG and anti-EMA) and checking for genetic markers (HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8).
  • - The results indicated a 1.32% prevalence of positive CD markers and a higher percentage of European and Native American genetic ancestry among those testing positive, suggesting a notable presence of CD in Colombia compared to prior studies.
