Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War general and twice-elected President of the United States, was highly respected in late-19th century America. Gradually however, it became the conventional wisdom that he was an alcoholic who had only succeeded as a general by using overwhelming force.

The Haitian Orthopaedic Residency Exchange Program.

Unlabelled: After a devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, multiple South Carolinian orthopaedic teams, funded by the South Carolina Orthopedic Association (SCOA), developed an exchange program for Haitian residents.

Methods: SCOA teams have sequentially logged their patient experiences since 2015 for a total of six updates per year. These logs were reviewed in detail to evaluate clinical results in terms of case volumes, cases performed, follow-up obtained, and complications.

Evaluation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic kaolin particle films for peach crop, arthropod and disease management.

Hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic kaolin particle film treatments to peach (Prunus persica (L) Batsch) trees were evaluated for crop and pest management capabilities in six studies from 1997 to 2000. Unsprayed control and standard treatments, the latter consisting of a commercial pesticide program, were included for comparison. Treatments in initial studies were applied via handgun, which resulted in a uniform and heavy deposit of kaolin after the first application.

Basosquamous carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx with sudden death from asphyxia.

Excluding laryngeal papillomas, neoplasms of the hypopharynx rarely cause sudden asphyxial death in adults. We describe the first such death from a carcinoma and review the literature for similar cases since 1966. A high clinical index of suspicion and early laryngoscopy in individuals with symptoms suggestive of hypopharyngeal neoplasia are important.

Relationship Between Apple Fruit Epicuticular Wax and Growth of Peltaster fructicola and Leptodontidium elatius, Two Fungi that Cause Sooty Blotch Disease.

Sooty blotch severity varied among apple cultivars or selections surveyed in 1989 and 1992. No mycelial growth was observed on russetted areas of the cuticle that are considered impermeable. Ursolic acid and n-alkanes were the most prominent components of the epicuticular waxes of the cultivars or selections evaluated.

Diagnostic accuracy of a rural live video telepathology system.

Accuracy of diagnoses rendered using a live video telepathology network was assessed for permanent sections of surgical pathology specimens. To determine accuracy, telepathology diagnoses were compared with those obtained by directly viewing the glass slide using a standard microscope. A total of 294 cases were read via both telepathology and glass slide by attending pathologists at a tertiary care medical center.

An evaluation of the immunochemical LD-1 method in routine clinical practice.

We report our extended clinical experience with the use of an immunochemical method for LD-1 assay in 260 unselected, consecutive patients admitted with the clinical suspicion of recent myocardial infarction (M.I.).

Immunochemical determination of LDH-1.

An evaluation of a new immunochemical method for the heart isoenzyme of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH-1) is described. In this assay, a goat antibody against the M subunit of LDH is added to a patient's serum. Donkey antigoat gamma globulin is then added, which precipitates the M-anti-M complex.

Osteochondral lesions of the talus.

In a retrospective study of thirty-one ankles in twenty-nine patients with osteochondral lesions, we found that lateral lesions were associated with inversion or inversion-dorsiflexion trauma, were morphologically shallow, and were more likely to become displaced in the joint and to have persistent symptoms. Medial lesions were both traumatic and atraumatic in origin, morphologically deep, and less symptomatic. Using the classification system of Berndt and Harty, it appeared that Stage-I and Stage-II lesions should be treated non-operatively, regardless of location.

Elevation of brain-type creatine kinase in serum from patients with carcinoma.

The brain isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CK BB) occurs in trace amounts in normal serum and is moderately increased in only a small number of non-oncological conditions. Although many tissues and tumors contain CK BB, we observed serum elevations only in certain carcinomas. Eleven patients with tissue-proven small cell anaplastic carcinoma (SCAC) of the lung had striking elevations of serum CK BB and no evidence of central nervous system (CNS) metastases.

Synergism of penicillin and gentamicin against Listeria monocytogenes in ex vivo hemodialysis culture.

A new technique of ex vivo hemodialysis culture was used to study the effects against Listeria monocytogenes of penicillin G and gentamicin administered intra-muscular, singly and in combination, in the goat. Bactericidal synergism of the combination was detected despite rapidly diminishing concentrations of the drugs in the blood plasma and dialysate.

Ex vivo hemodialysis culture of microbial and mammalian cells.

A small hemodialysis culture unit was developed which can be attached to an arterial-venous shunt and worn by an animal for days. The unit consists of a blood channel separated by a membrane from a dialysate chamber in which microbial or mammalian cells can be cultured. Bacterial multiplication proceeded first exponentially at the maximal rate and then arithmetically at a lesser, dialysis-limited rate.

Exteriorized carotid-jugular shunt for hemodialysis of the goat.

A surgical technique was developed for the establishment of a permanent exteriorized artificial shunt between a carotid artery and a jugular vein of a goat. The shunt allowed continuous hemodialysis with an artificial kidney for hours or a prosthetic unit for days and intermittent experimental use of the animal for months.

Hemodialysis culture of Serratia marcescens in a goat-artificial kidney-fermentor system.

Hemodialysis was employed to simulate in vivo conditions for growth in mammalian blood, but without phagocytosis, by using the goat and Serratia marcescens as a host-parasite model. The blood stream was shunted surgically via prosthetic tubing from a carotid artery through the hollow-fiber membranes in an artificial kidney hemodialyzer and back into a jugular vein. The dialysate solution concurrently was pumped from a modular fermentor through the hemodialyzer jacket outside of the membranes and back into the fermentor.
