Background: Globally, economically developed countries face similar ageing demographics and the challenge of a 'care gap', yet they vary due to different care and formal support systems, and different cultural and societal norms around illness and care. The aim of this exploratory study was to examine cross-country variations in caregiver motivations, willingness, values, meaning in life, illness beliefs, and experiences of wellbeing, gain, health-related quality of life, burden and depression, across 6 European countries and Israel. Cross-country differences in the above-mentioned informal caregiver experiences are rarely described.

Neonatal epileptic seizures take place in the early childhood years, accounting for a severe condition with several deaths and neurological problems in newborn neonates. Despite the early advancements on the diagnosis and/or treatment of this condition, as a major difficulty accounts the inability of the physicians to identify and characterize a seizure, as one a small percentage gets detected in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). An important step towards any kind of seizure classification is the detection and reduction of non-cerebral activity.

Objectives: We aimed to automate routine extraction of clinically relevant unstructured information from uro-oncological histopathology reports by applying rule-based and machine learning (ML)/deep learning (DL) methods to develop an oncology focused natural language processing (NLP) algorithm.

Methods: Our algorithm employs a combination of a rule-based approach and support vector machines/neural networks (BioBert/Clinical BERT), and is optimised for accuracy. We randomly extracted 5772 uro-oncological histology reports from 2008 to 2018 from electronic health records (EHRs) and split the data into training and validation datasets in an 80:20 ratio.

Amino acid metabolism by microorganisms is a new but important pathway for the formation of NDMA precursors in water. We investigated the properties of nitrosamine precursors produced through microbial metabolism of amino acids by polarity rapid assessment method and molecular weight fractionation by ultrafiltration method. The PRAM results showed that the positively charged fraction and the non-polar fraction accounted for most (45 %-79 % and 6 %-82 %, respectively) of the NDMA precursors.

Radiotranscriptomics is an emerging field that aims to investigate the relationships between the radiomic features extracted from medical images and gene expression profiles that contribute in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis of cancer. This study proposes a methodological framework for the investigation of these associations with application on non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Six publicly available NSCLC datasets with transcriptomics data were used to derive and validate a transcriptomic signature for its ability to differentiate between cancer and non-malignant lung tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal exposure to specific nitrosamines in drinking water during pregnancy may lead to negative birth outcomes, including lower birth weight, small for gestational age, and an increased risk of preterm delivery.
  • - A study involving 2457 mother-infant pairs in central China revealed that higher levels of certain nitrosamines like NDMA and NDEA were significantly correlated with these adverse outcomes.
  • - These initial findings suggest the need for further research in different populations to confirm the risks associated with drinking water nitrosamines during pregnancy.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in western societies. Therefore the identification of novel biomarkers to be used as diagnostic or therapeutic targets is of significant scientific interest. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is one such protein shown to be involved in endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and atherogenesis.

Informal caregivers are at risk of caregiver burden, and physical proximity to the care recipient may add to this negative outcome. Yet, individual differences in emotional proximity to the care recipient such as attachment orientations may contribute to caregivers' comfort towards different degrees of physical proximity, leading to varying levels of burden. The current study is the first to explore the role of physical proximity on caregiver burden as moderated by attachment orientations.

Symptomatic macromastia places a severe physical and psychological burden on patients. Reduction mammaplasty is the primary treatment; however, conventional surgery may lead to postoperative nipple-areolar complex necrosis due to damage to the dominant supplying arteries. In this study, we designed and fabricated an innovative, three-dimensional-printed breast vascular model to provide surgical guidance for reduction mammaplasty.

Informal caregivers are those who provide unpaid care to a relative or friend with a chronic illness, disability or other long-lasting health or care need. Providing informal care in the context of chronic health conditions presents a significant global challenge. Examination of the determinants of informal caregivers' behaviour, especially in terms of motivations and willingness to provide/receive care, is crucial to understanding the nature of caregiver and care recipient experiences.

Introduction: Distance caregivers (DCGs) are a growing population with substantial contribution to informal care. While a reasonable amount is known on the determinants of motives and willingness to provide local informal care, and the local caregiver outcomes, reports for the distance caregiving population are lacking. An evidence synthesis of what motivates and makes DCGs willing to care from a distance and the impact of that care on their mental and physical health would highlight any gaps or consensus in knowledge.
