- Safe cochlear implantation (CI) can be performed successfully in patients with a canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy cavity, with no increased postoperative complications compared to standard procedures.
- A retrospective review of eight patients revealed that most were able to undergo single-stage implantation, with careful management of the external auditory canal and challenges related to ossification.
- Overall outcomes for patients indicated that CI is not only safe but also yields excellent auditory performance, similar to that of the general CI population with profound hearing loss.
