Resonance formation of the electron velocity distribution function (EDF) in an inert gas dc discharge at low pressures and small currents is analyzed on the basis of an accurate numerical solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation in spatially periodic sinusoidally modulated striation-like fields. Calculations are performed for neon at pressures around 1 Torr . The dependences of the EDF, electron density and mean energy, and excitation rate on the electric field spatial period length are investigated.

The physical processes occurring in electrode regions and the positive column of a cylindrical magnetron discharge in crossed electric and magnetic fields are investigated based on the solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation by a multiterm decomposition of the electron phase space distribution function in terms of spherical tensors. The influence of the distribution function anisotropy on the absolute values and radial profiles of the electron density and rates of various transport and collision processes is analyzed. The spiral lines for the directed particle and energy transport are obtained to illustrate the anisotropy effects in dependence on the magnetic field.

A general multiterm representation of the phase space electron distribution function in terms of spherical tensors is used to solve the Boltzmann kinetic equation in crossed electric and magnetic fields. The problem is formulated for an axisymmetric cylindrical magnetron discharge with the homogeneous magnetic field being directed axially and the electric field between the coaxial cathode and anode varying in radius only. A spherical harmonic representation of the velocity distribution function in Cartesian coordinates becomes especially cumbersome in the presence of the magnetic field.

IgG4 has been proposed to act as a 'blocking antibody' due to its ability to compete for the same epitopes as IgE thus preventing IgE-dependent allergic responses. The J and S isolates of Trichuris muris have different infection profiles in C57BL/6 mice; J worms are expelled, S worms survive to chronicity. Building on this, the ability of the J and S isolates to survive, and the quality of the immune response induced was explored in three different strains of mouse. We examined the mechanism of action and compared the anthelmintic efficacy of cysteine proteinases from papaya, pineapple, fig, kiwi fruit and Egyptian milkweed in vitro using the rodent gastrointestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus. Within a 2 h incubation period, all the cysteine proteinases, with the exception of the kiwi fruit extract, caused marked damage to the cuticle of H. polygyrus adult male and female worms, reflected in the loss of surface cuticular layers.

A copro-antigen capture ELISA for the detection of Teladorsagia circumcincta infection in sheep was developed and evaluated. Experiments with faeces from worm-free sheep, that had been spiked with known concentrations of excretory-secretory (E-S) antigen indicated that a positive signal was generated with 180 ng of E-S/ml. Isolates of Cryptosporidium were collected from 3 species of woodland and field rodents (Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus arvalis, and Apodemus flavicollis) and were characterized by polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of fragments of the oocyst wall protein (COWP) gene and of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene.
