Microplastic (MP) contamination in the aquatic ecosystems is a growing global environmental issue that can cause detrimental effects on aquatic species. In this study, MPs in fish (six species, 195 specimens), molluscs (one species, 21 specimens), and crustaceans (three species, 264 specimens) with various biometry, trophic levels, feeding habits, and habitat characteristics were investigated in three habitats: a river, an estuary, and a harbor in the Persian Gulf. Gastrointestinal tracts, gills and skin of targeted samples were chemically digested and the MPs recovered were counted and analyzed with optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and SEM/EDX.

We examined the occurrence and sources of 16 priority PAHs in the water and sediment samples of the Miankaleh Wetland (Coastal Biosphere Reserve), famous for harbouring huge flocks of migrating birds. Amirkalayeh Wetland, listed as wetlands of International Importance in the Ramsar Convention, exposes to severe water quality stress resulted from increase in dissolved ions and nutrients concentrations. In addition to in situ measurements of physicochemical parameters (electrical conductivity, pH, and temperature), a total number of 28 water samples were collected from Amirkalayeh Wetland and surrounding surface and groundwater resources to investigate the most important factors increasing trophic state and decreasing the water quality of the wetland. In this study, we evaluate the geochemistry of macro- (Fe, P, Ca, S, K, Na, Mg) and micronutrients (Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Mn, Cd, Sr, Cr, Hg, Se), along with possible health risks of heavy metals contamination in agricultural soils and vegetables of the Mahshahr industrial port in Iran. Calculation of geochemical coefficients revealed the low pollution load of Mahshahr agricultural soils. Most of the investigated elements exhibited lower concentrations in soil than international standards.

This study investigates, for the first time, the concentration, distribution, fate and chemical composition of microplastics (MPs) in urban and industrial soils of Ahvaz metropolis, SW Iran. MP concentrations ranged from 100 to 3135 and 80 to1220 unit·kg in urban and industrial soils, respectively, with corresponding means of 619 and 390 unit·kg. The potentially toxic elements (PTEs) concentrations in water and sediments were measured in the Hoor Al-Azim wetland to evaluate the spatial distribution, pollution rate, fate, partitioning, and ecological risk and also to recognize the PTEs sources in sediments using MLR-APCs (multiple linear regression-absolute principal component scores) receptor model. The human health risk was investigated based on the seven fish species consumed in the study area. Based on the results, water and sediment contamination was observed at some stations in the southern part of the wetland where agricultural water drains.
