Population-based genome-wide association study of cognitive decline in older adults free of dementia: identification of a novel locus for the attention domain.

To identify novel loci that affect cognitive decline in older adults free of dementia, we conducted genome-wide and gene-based meta-analyses on longitudinal slopes of 5 cognitive domains (memory, executive function, language, attention/processing speed, and visuospatial ability) derived from 2 population-based cohorts. For decline over time in each cognitive domain, we normalized intraindividual slopes within each cohort, accounting for baseline age, sex, and years of education. Normalized slope for each domain was used in cohort-specific genome-wide analyses after including top principal components as covariates followed by genome-wide and gene-based meta-analyses.

Actinic keratoses (AKs) and squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) are precursor lesions for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), the second most common form of cancer. Current topical therapies for AKs and SCCIS promote skin inflammation to eradicate lesions and do not directly target the biological mechanisms driving growth. We hypothesized that topical small molecule inhibitors targeting kinases promoting keratinocyte growth in AKs and SCCIS could induce regression of these lesions with less inflammation.

Comparison of Population Aging in Europe and Asia Using a Time-Consistent and Comparative Aging Measure.

We compare population aging in Europe and Asia using a measure that is both consistent over time and appropriate for cross-country comparison. Sanderson and Scherbov proposed to estimate the old-age threshold by the age at which the remaining life expectancy (RLE) equals 15 years. We propose an adjustment of this measure, taking into account cross-national differences in the exceptionality of reaching that age.

People often worry how others will perceive them if they socially reject others, but do women have more to fear than men? Although previous research has shown that women are perceived negatively for behaving in counter-stereotypical ways, research on backlash has focused on business settings. The present research applies backlash theory to examine how women are perceived for engaging in social rejection. The findings suggest that backlash may operate differently in social rejection because only men punish women for rejecting.
