Background: Nursing faculty vacancies reduce the numbers of students entering the nursing profession, exacerbating the health care workforce crisis. Resilience, known to mitigate occupational burnout, may play a role in retaining existing prelicensure nursing faculty (PNF), a population that has not been extensively studied.

Purpose: We examined compassion satisfaction (CS), perceived support (PS), and associated demographic factors of resilience among PNF.

This study investigated the effectiveness of quitline service intensity (high vs. low) on past 30-day tobacco abstinence at 7-months follow-up, using observational data from the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline (OTH) between April 2020 and December 2021. To assess the impact of loss to follow-up and non-random treatment assignment, we fit the parameters of a marginal structural model to estimate inverse probability weights for censoring (IPCW) and treatment (IPTW) and combined (IPCTW).

The current documented nursing faculty shortage is an important factor affecting our ability to address the nationwide nursing shortage. Occupational burnout is a common phenomenon among nurses that may negatively impact retention of nursing faculty. While research suggests that promoting resilience moderates occupational burnout and relates to occupational satisfaction in practicing nurses, very few investigations have examined resilience among nursing faculty.

Background: Tobacco quitlines provide effective resources (eg, nicotine replacement therapy, smoking cessation counseling, and text and web-based support) for those who want to quit smoking in the United States. However, quitlines reach approximately only 1%-3% of people who smoke each year. Novel, smartphone-based, and low-burden interventions that offer 24/7 access to smoking cessation resources that are tailored to current readiness to quit may increase appeal, reach, and effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions.

Gun violence is a leading public health concern in the US; subsequently, firearm-related violence prevention is a top priority for policymakers. Extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws are a state-level attempt to reduce gun-related injuries and deaths. These court-issued orders prohibit people found to be dangerous to themselves or others from temporarily purchasing or possessing a firearm.

Background: Extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) are one policy mechanism to address the critical public health problem of gun violence. The inclusion of healthcare professionals with ERPOs is a promising approach to expanding ERPO utilization, yet early evidence has not been examined.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to synthesize the current research on healthcare professionals and ERPOs.

Evaluating the impact of non-randomized treatment on various health outcomes is difficult in observational studies because of the presence of covariates that may affect both the treatment or exposure received and the outcome of interest. In the present study, we develop a semiparametric multiply robust multiple imputation method for estimating average treatment effects in such studies. Our method combines information from multiple propensity score models and outcome regression models, and is multiply robust in that it produces consistent estimators for the average causal effects if at least one of the models is correctly specified.

The COVID-19 pandemic halted progress in global vaccine coverage and disrupted routine childhood vaccination practices worldwide. While there is ample evidence of the vaccination decline experienced during the pandemic, it is less clear how low-income countries were affected. We executed a systematic review to synthesize the current literature on the impacts of routine childhood vaccinations in low-income countries from 1 January 2020 to 8 February 2023.

Green Care therapies are defined as the engagement of a patient with the nature, exposing patients to a nature based therapeutic setting that may facilitate their recovery. Such therapies became popular at the end of the twentieth century. This therapeutic approach may include therapeutic horticulture, nature therapies, care farming, facilitated exercise, and animal-assisted therapies with farm animals (AATF).

The provision of nursing care has shifted toward integrated primary care (provision of community health services by an interprofessional team), requiring that nurse educators take steps to ensure students have opportunities to learn and practice the leadership and professional skills required to function as members and leaders of interdisciplinary teams. We developed the Transforming RN Roles in Community Based Integrated Primary Care (TRIP) program for undergraduate nursing students to facilitate this learning. During clinical immersion, students participated in academic service learning (ASL) activities consisting of a minimum of 25 h of clinical agency service each semester.

Green care is an umbrella term that includes numerous therapeutic interventions that immerse the patient into nature and natural environments. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) with farm animals is a component of green care that may benefit patients with mental health disorders. While the majority of research exploring farm AATs originated in Europe, interest in this therapeutic intervention is emerging in the United States.

Introduction: Although the effectiveness of tobacco quitline services for people who smoke cigarettes is well established, less is known about other forms of tobacco. This study aimed to compare quit rates and factors contributing to tobacco abstinence in men reporting dual use (smokeless tobacco and one additional combustible tobacco product), smokeless tobacco use only, and cigarette use only.

Methods: Self-reported 30-day point-prevalence tobacco abstinence at the 7-month follow-up was calculated in males who registered with the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline and completed a 7-month follow-up survey (N=3,721) (July 2015-November 2021).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the factors linked to recent cannabis use among cancer survivors versus non-cancer individuals, finding notable differences in usage patterns.
  • Cancer survivors had lower overall cannabis use (7.57%) than those without cancer (10.83%), but a higher rate of medical use (82.23% vs. 62.58%).
  • Current smoking and binge drinking were common risk factors for cannabis use in both groups, indicating the need for further research to guide cannabis use for medical purposes and develop standardized education and clinical guidelines.

It is estimated that the prevalence of smoking among adults with MHDs ranges between 40-60%, as compared to about 17% among those without an MHD. In addition, smokers with MHDs smoke more cigarettes, are more nicotine dependent, and experience more difficulty quitting, compared to other smokers. The uniquely high smoking prevalence among the MHD population is a serious public health concern; unfortunately, a majority of individuals experiencing difficulty receive no treatment.

As an anti-inflammatory strategy, MAPK-activated protein kinase-2 (MK2) inhibition can potentially avoid the clinical failures seen for direct p38 inhibitors, especially tachyphylaxis. CC-99677, a selective targeted covalent MK2 inhibitor, employs a rare chloropyrimidine that bonds to the sulfur of cysteine 140 in the ATP binding site via a nucleophilic aromatic substitutions (SAr) mechanism. This irreversible mechanism translates biochemical potency to cells shown by potent inhibition of heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) phosphorylation in LPS-activated monocytic THP-1 cells.
