Background: Endoscopic pituitary surgery might yield better endocrine outcomes compared to microscopic resection. We conducted a prospective, randomized, single-blinded study to compare the endocrine outcome and quality of life (QoL) of patients with newly diagnosed pituitary adenoma who underwent either endoscopic or microscopic transsphenoidal surgery (NCT03515603).
Methods: Due to slow recruitment, this study had to be stopped prematurely.
Background: Hyperkalemia, generally defined as serum potassium levels greater than 5.0 mEq/L, poses significant clinical risks, including cardiac toxicity and muscle weakness. Its prevalence and severity increase in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and heart failure (HF), particularly when compounded by medications like Angiotensin converting inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium sparing diuretics.

This study aims to collect data on performance-based knee function using inertial measurement units (IMUs) worn by participants both preoperatively and postoperatively. PROMs will be completed by the patients before and after surgery to assess their ability to detect the same changes in performance-based knee function measured by the sensors.

While computed tomography (CT) is considered the gold standard for regular imaging, its frequent use could be linked to adverse clinical outcomes. This study aimed to assess bedside transcranial ultrasound (TUS) to capture intracranial anatomical structures and pathologies.

We examined the current evidence on the relationship between pica practices, anemia, and oral health outcomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLittle is known about the potential impact of point source contamination from seed treatment pesticide residues and degradation products in waste products in treated seed. The presence of these pesticides and their degradation products in the environment has been associated with toxic effects on non-target organisms including bees, aquatic organisms and humans. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of twenty-two pesticide residues and their degradation products in two streams receiving runoff from land-applied wet cake, applied and spilled wastewater originating at a biofuels production facility using pesticide-treated seed as a feedstock.

Originally, orthopaedic surgeons were trained to address a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions. However, increasing complexity and specialization in knowledge have driven a progressive narrowing of focus within orthopaedics.

Introduction: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two methods for non-invasive mechanical ventilation in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) - using a helmet interface with a flow meter and positive end-expiratory pressure valve versus a traditional mechanical ventilator.
Material And Methods: We conducted a single-center randomized clinical trial involving 100 adult SARS-CoV-2 patients in a specialized private hospital. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one using the helmet interface with a flow meter and positive end-expiratory pressure valve and the other employing conventional mechanical ventilation.

Aims: The transepicondylar axis is a well-established reference for the determination of femoral component rotation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, when severe bone loss is present in the femoral condyles, rotational alignment can be more complicated. There is a lack of validated landmarks in the supracondylar region of the distal femur.

Alternatively, gelatin can be in droplet form or as a section, which is a more recent development. In this study, we report on investigations where hot multi-element gelatin solutions are placed in a linear fashion on microscopic slides to conduct comparative statistical observations between doped tissue homogenates from the liver and lung.

Secukinumab (SEC), a monoclonal anti-interleukin-17A antibody, efficiently controls signs of psoriasis, but the effect on pruritus and cutaneous neuroanatomy remained unknown. The primary objective of this study (NCT02362789) was to evaluate the superiority of SEC treatment vs placebo on pruritus intensity (visual analogue scale; VAS).

To determine the current prevalence and type of fast-food outlets at medical-school-affiliated hospitals and compare them to previous findings to assess progress in improving the hospital food environment. We invited medical students at 192 medical and osteopathic schools to complete Sogolytics surveys reporting on fast-food restaurants that are affiliated with their main teaching hospital or medical centers. Of 192 medical and osteopathic schools, 255 individual completed surveys were received from 146 schools.

Methods: A survey was developed, piloted, and distributed to self-declared interested stakeholders in the PERFORM trial. The survey targeted orthopedic oncologists and was designed to assess patient and bone lesion characteristics that drive surgical decision-making in the treatment of skeletal metastases in the proximal femur.
Since Jane Goodall's famous observations of stick tool use by chimpanzees, animal tool use has been observed in numerous species, including many primates, dolphins, and birds. Some animals, such as New Caledonian crows, even craft tools. Elephants frequently use tools and also modify them.

Objectives: to identify oncological-orthopedic studies published in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira over three decades; to classify them according to the type and level of evidence (LE); to observe the inter-rater agreement in the classification of studies; to analyze the studies retrospectively, according to levels of evidence; and to outline the evolution of the evidence in the study period.
Methods: Descriptive analyses were performed with absolute and relative frequencies of studies published between 1993 and 2022. Inter-rater agreement was analyzed by percentage of agreement and Kappa statistic (95%CI).
Background: Digital tools are being increasingly used worldwide in primary knee arthroplasty. This study aimed to analyze the utilization density of digital tools, the preferred alignment strategies, and the obstacles and benefits of implementing these technologies in German-speaking countries.
Materials And Methods: An online survey with 57 questions about digital tools in primary knee arthroplasty and their usage was conducted among members of the Arthroplasty Working Group (AE).
Aims: This project aimed to improve physicians' adherence to evidence-based practices regarding the selection and administration of intra-articular knee injections for patients with osteoarthritis. The project also aimed to empower patients by increasing their awareness of these evidence-based practices.
Introduction: In the management of knee osteoarthritis, intra-articular injections are commonly used when initial treatments prove inadequate.
