Maternal consumption of coffee during pregnancy and stillbirth and infant death in first year of life: prospective study.

Objective: To study the association between coffee consumption during pregnancy and the risk of stillbirth and infant death in the first year of life.

Design: Prospective follow up study.

Setting: Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, 1989-96.

Effects of inhaled plasminogen activator on the balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis in traumatized pigs.

A profibrinolytic state is normal in the alveoli, but this may change as a result of trauma, possibly leading to fibrin deposition, a characteristic of acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome. Therefore, the present study investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled manner the effect of severe trauma on the alveolar fibrinolytic/coagulation balance, and the effect here-upon of inhalation of single-chain urokinase plasminogen activator (scu-PA) in pigs. The study shows an increased concentration of scu-PA in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of the treated animals in association with an increased plasmin-dependent fibrinolytic activity without increased systemic fibrinolytic activity, the transient increase in the concentration of scu-PA in the plasma being minimal.

Activation of blood coagulation in pigs following lower limb gunshot trauma.

A standardized, quantifiable gunshot trauma to one hind leg of fourteen anaesthetized and sedated pigs was used to investigate the extent to which an isolated gunshot trauma causes activation of blood coagulation. The traumatized pigs were mechanically ventilated in intensive care for 48 h before they were euthanized. Blood samples were drawn at baseline (t = 0), 24, 27 and 48 h after trauma to examine the late effects on haemostasis.

Resumption of mitosis during post-thaw culture: a key parameter in selecting the right embryos for transfer.

This retrospective study of 701 thaw cycles analysed the clinical importance of whether or not embryos resumed mitosis during 24 h of post-thaw culture. A total of 3360 frozen embryos were thawed; 1922 embryos survived the freeze-thaw procedure with at least one intact blastomere and were then cultured for 24 h before transfer. All transfers were registered into either the 'cleaved embryo group' (n = 459), which was defined as transfers where at least one of the transferred embryos cleaved during the post-thaw culture period, or the 'non-cleaved embryo group' (n = 153), where none of the transferred embryos cleaved during the post-thaw culture period.

Serotonin1A receptor autoradiography during alcohol-withdrawal kindling.

A series of autoradiography experiments were conducted in order to test the theory that the serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtype 5-HT(1a) is involved in alcohol-withdrawal kindled convulsive behaviour. Alcohol-withdrawal kindling was performed by subjecting male Wistar rats to multiple episodes consisting of 2 days of alcohol intoxication and 5 days of alcohol withdrawal. In the first episode alcohol intoxication led to focal downregulation of [3H]-8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin ([3H]-8-OH-DPAT) binding sites in septum and subregions of frontal cortex, hippocampus, and entorhinal cortex.

Hearing in the elderly > or = 80 years of age. Prevalence of problems and sensitivity.

This article is part of an epidemiological study on hearing in an urban population > or = 80 years of age, and concentrates on the prevalence of hearing problems and hearing sensitivity as a function of age and gender. Prior to the study, 2915 residents aged 80+ from the Valby area in Copenhagen were selected for investigation and subdivided into two groups. The first group, comprising n = 859 subjects previously provided with HA, and the second group, resulting from an invitation mailed to n = 565 subjects, were matched according to the age and gender distribution of the population, i.

Glutamate and benzodiazepine receptor autoradiography in rat brain after repetition of alcohol dependence.

During repeated alcohol withdrawal, convulsive withdrawal behavior has been shown to be increased in a kindling-like manner in both clinical and experimental studies. In the present experiment, quantitative autoradiography was used to investigate binding of tritiated ligands to glutamate receptor subtypes and the benzodiazepine/GABA (BZ/GABA) receptor complex in rats exposed to 14 episodes of alcohol withdrawal. Seizures were detected in 25% of the animals during withdrawal episode 10-13.

The Valby Project. A survey of the hearing in the elderly > or = 80 years of age-provided with hearing aids.

This contribution forms part of an epidemiological study of the hearing in the elderly > or = 80 years of age and describes some of the rehabilitative aspects. The sample is defined according to an age > or = 80 years of age, living in the Valby district at the time of data collection (November 1993), and provided with a hearing aid (HA) during this period 1988-1993. All information in this part of the survey is obtained from the records in the Department.

Ketamine anaesthesia for electrocochleography in children. Are psychic side effects really rare?

Retrospectively, we have studied the occurrence of psychic side effects in 121 children (median age 2.25 years) who have had ketamine anaesthesia for electrocochleography. For comparison, the same questionnaire was given to 66 children who had had ketamine for the surgery of squints.

Diazepam prevents progression of kindled alcohol withdrawal behaviour.

The purpose of the present experiment was to study the "kindling" hypothesis of alcohol withdrawal stating that exposure to repeated episodes of alcohol withdrawal results in an increased severity of subsequent withdrawal reactions. Two groups of male Wistar rats were subjected to 13 episodes of 2 days severe alcohol intoxication and 5 days alcohol withdrawal. Animals in the control group (n = 80) developed clinical withdrawal signs following each intoxication episode.

Early prenatal diagnosis of the fragile site at Xq27.3 associated with Martin-Bell syndrome.

Early prenatal diagnosis of the fragile X was attempted in 44 pregnancies, including one twin pregnancy at risk of Martin-Bell (MB) syndrome. The sex ratio was 24M:21F. The fragile site was reproducibly demonstrated in cultured chorionic villus (CV) cells in eight male and five female fetuses.

Data on the HL-A linkage group.

Lod scores from a study in 229 families of the linkage relations of HL-A-PGM3 to 19 marker loci and cystic fibrosis are reported. The data exclude that ADA belongs to this linkage group while they give weak support for the inclusion of P. There is weak evidence for linkage of cystic fibrosis to PGM3, but none for linkage to HL-A.
