Introduction: Chronic diseases are a public health problem, and 80% of them are related to modifiable risk factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and risky alcohol consumption. Although the intervention in smoking and hazardous alcohol drinking has proven to be effective in Primary Care, it is unknown whether it works in the same way in the hospital setting.

AFM and Fluorescence Microscopy of Single Cells with Simultaneous Mechanical Stimulation via Electrically Stretchable Substrates.

We have developed a novel experimental set-up that simultaneously, (i) applies static and dynamic deformations to adherent cells in culture, (ii) allows the visualization of cells under fluorescence microscopy, and (iii) allows atomic force microscopy nanoindentation measurements of the mechanical properties of the cells. The cell stretcher device relies on a dielectric elastomer film that can be electro-actuated and acts as the cell culture substrate. The shape and position of the electrodes actuating the film can be controlled by design in order to obtain specific deformations across the cell culture chamber.

Fibrin is a protein-based hydrogel formed during blood coagulation. It can also be produced from human blood plasma, and it is capable of resisting high deformations. However, after each deformation process, it loses high amounts of water, which subsequently makes it mechanically unstable and, finally, difficult to manipulate.

Nonviral Expression of LL-37 in a Human Skin Equivalent to Prevent Infection in Skin Wounds.

Inefficient autologous tissue recovery in skin wounds increases the susceptibility of patients to infections caused by multidrug resistant microorganisms, resulting in a high mortality rate. Genetic modification of skin cells has become an important field of study because it could lead to the construction of more functional skin grafts, through the overexpression of antimicrobial peptides that would prevent early contamination and infection with bacteria. In this study, we produce and evaluate human skin equivalents (HSEs) containing transfected human primary fibroblasts and keratinocytes by polyplexes to express the antimicrobial peptide LL-37.

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a secreted cytokine that is an important mediator of the immune response in numerous tissues, including skeletal muscle. IL-6 is considered a myokine as it can be secreted by muscle. IL-6 is secreted following exercise, where it exerts both pro-myogenic effects as well as anti-myogenic effects such as promoting atrophy and muscle wasting.

[Effects of electronic cigarettes on health. A literature review].

Objective: To identify the most recent literature on electronic cigarettes (EC) available in the market, in order to characterize their composition, current use, health risks associated with their use, as well as their possible use as smoking cessation therapy. To generate a greater understanding of EC and their importance in the field of public health.

Materials And Methods: A literature review was performed in indexed databases using MeSH and DeCS terms, finding 55 articles that met the inclusion criteria and five additional reviews of companies or governmental bodies.

Dermo-epidermal organotypic cultures for in vitro evaluation of skin irritation and corrosion.

In recent years, in-vitro skin models for chemical hazard identification have been developed. Most of them consist only of human keratinocytes, neglecting the contribution of other skin constituents. Cultures containing the dermal and epidermal component provide an attractive system to investigate, in a more realistic model, toxicological responses, which represents a distinct advantage over keratinocytes-based models that do not mimic faithfully the in vivo environment.

Efficacy and Safety of Micropulse® Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation in Glaucoma.

Objective: To report the results using Micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (Iridex) in the treatment of glaucoma.

Methods: Retrospective study in adult patients with glaucoma with at least 6 months of follow-up, and only one session of Micropulse. The same surgical technique was used in all cases.

Objective: This study uses polysomnography and the Epworth sleepiness scale to assess the efficiency of the OcluchMAD in patients with Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS), on overall respiratory disturbance indices (RDI), supine respiratory disturbance index (SRDI), minimum oxygen saturation, microarousals, CT90 (or ID90), sleep efficacy and snoring. These data are associated with skeletal class and facial biotype in order to establish predictive parameters for its effectiveness according to craniofacial morphology.

Methods: 22 adult patients (between 38 and 60 years of age) of both sexes (7 women, 15 men) diagnosed with OSAS in the Hospital de Carabineros de Chile (HOSCAR) Neurology Unit were recruited and given the Ocluch MAD in the hospital's dental clinic, for its use during a three-month period.

Serum levels of interleukin-6 are linked to the severity of the disease caused by Andes Virus.

Andes virus (ANDV) is the etiological agent of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome in Chile. In this study, we evaluated the profile of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-12p70, IL-21, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10 and IL-6 in serum samples of ANDV-infected patients at the time of hospitalization. The mean levels of circulating cytokines were determined by a Bead-Based Multiplex assay coupled with Luminex detection technology, in order to compare 43 serum samples of healthy controls and 43 samples of ANDV-infected patients that had been categorized according to the severity of disease.

Obstructive sleep apnea: Is it a biomarker of metabolic health in obesity.

Context: The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases with obesity, and OSA has been linked to increased cardiovascular risk via hypoxemia and sleep disruption.

Objective And Main Outcome Measures: We hypothesized that if OSA contributes to cardio-metabolic risk, then 1) obese individuals with OSA will have more cardio-metabolic disease, and 2) patients with OSA who are non-adherent to CPAP treatment will have a greater incidence of cardio-metabolic abnormalities.

Design Setting And Patients: We prospectively recruited obese patients (n = 83; BMI 49 ± 9 kg/m).
