Low complexity regions (LCRs) are sequences of nucleic acids or proteins defined by a compositional bias. The absence of the hydrophobic norvaline and norleucine in the inventory of protein amino acids is readdressed. The well-documented intracellular accumulation of these two amino acids results from the low-substrate specificity of the branched-chain amino acid biosynthetic enzymes that act over a number of related α-ketoacids. Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2) mediates transcriptional silencing by catalyzing histone H3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3), but its role in the maturation of postmitotic mammalian neurons remains largely unknown. We report that the PRC2 paralogs Ezh1 and Ezh2 are differentially expressed during hippocampal development. We show that depletion of Ezh2 leads to increased expression of PSD-95, a critical plasticity gene, and that reduced PSD-95 gene transcription is correlated with enrichment of Ezh2 at the PSD-95 gene promoter; however, the H3K27me3 epigenetic mark is not present at the PSD-95 gene promoter, likely due to the antagonizing effects of the H3S28P and H3K27Ac marks and the activity of the H3K27 demethylases JMJD3 and UTX.

Condensation of homochiral primary amines with 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carbaldehyde affords the corresponding imidazolyl-imine compounds (L1-L3) which have been employed as ligands for the preparation of half-sandwich rhodium and iridium complexes of the formula [(η(5)-C5Me5)MClLn][SbF6]. Treatment of these chloride compounds with AgSbF6 renders dicationic aqua-complexes [(η(5)-C5Me5)MLn(H2O)] [SbF6]2 which act as catalysts for the Diels-Alder reaction between methacrolein and cyclopentadiene. Catalysis occurs with good exo:endo selectivity and poor enantioselectivity.

Background: The objective of this study was to clarify the intermolecular interaction between antibacterial copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) and sodium alginate (NaAlg) by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and to process the spectra applying two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) correlation analysis. To our knowledge, the addition of NaAlg as a stabilizer of copper nanoparticles has not been previously reported. It is expected that the obtained results will provide valuable additional information on: (1) the influence of reducing agent ratio on the formation of copper nanoparticles in order to design functional nanomaterials with increased antibacterial activity, and (2) structural changes related to the incorporation of Cu NPs into the polymer matrix.

Following primary infection, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) establishes a persistent infection for life. HHV-6 reactivation has been associated with transplant rejection, delayed engraftment, encephalitis, muscular dystrophy, and drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome. The results of a detailed bioinformatic search for ribonucleotidyl coenzyme biosynthetic sequences in DNA- and RNA viral genomes are presented. No RNA viral genome sequence available as of April 2011 appears to encode for sequences involved in coenzyme biosynthesis. In both single- and double-stranded DNA viruses a diverse array of coenzyme biosynthetic genes has been identified, but none of the viral genomes examined here encodes for a complete pathway.

Aims: To assess the mechanisms involved in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuronal cell death, we examined the cellular consequences of LPS exposure in differentiated PC12 neurons and primary hippocampal neurons.

Results: Our data show that LPS is able to induce PC12 neuronal cell death without the participation of glial cells. Neuronal cell death was mediated by an increase in cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels.

We critically examine the proposal by Wächtershäuser (Prokaryotes 1:275-283, 2006a, Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci 361: 787-1808, 2006b) that putative transition metal binding sites in protein components of the translation machinery of hyperthermophiles provide evidence of a direct relationship with the FeS clusters of pyrite and thus indicate an autotrophic origin of life in volcanic environments. Analysis of completely sequenced cellular genomes of Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya does not support the suggestion by Wächtershäuser (Prokaryotes 1:275-283, 2006a, Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci 361: 787-1808, 2006b) that aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and ribosomal proteins bear sequence signatures typical of strong covalent metal bonding whose absence in mesophilic species reveals a process of adaptation towards less extreme environments.

A 50-kDa-polypeptide band peripherally bound to retinal rod outer segment (ROS) membranes was purified by anion-exchange chromatography. When the 50-kDa protein was compared with purified arrestin-1, it was observed that: (1) both proteins comigrated on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and were recognized by either anti-50-kDa protein polyclonal antibodies or anti-arrestin-1 monoclonal antibodies; (2) protein fragments and peptide fingerprint maps obtained following limited and complete proteolysis with specific proteases were very similar for both molecules; and (3) several chromatographically-purified tryptic peptides from the 50-kDa protein possessed the same amino acid composition as tryptic peptides deduced from the reported arrestin-1 primary structure. Consequently, arrestin-1 and the purified 50-kDa protein must correspond to variants of the same molecule.

The objective of this study was to describe the morphological and anatomical features of five unidentified ectomycorrhizal types of Alnus acuminata and to complement their identification based on ITS-rDNA sequence analysis. The combined approach of morphotyping and sequence analysis based on ITS sequence comparison with sequences contained in GenBank and the UNITE database let us assign three of the five field-collected ectomycorrhiza morphotypes to the tomentella-thelephora lineage that closely matched European and North American species.
