Trans-ε-viniferin, a resveratrol dimer found mainly in grapevine wood, has shown protective capacities against hepatic steatosis in vivo. Nevertheless, this compound is very poorly bioavailable. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the potential anti-steatotic properties of 1 and 10 µM of trans-ε-viniferin and its four glucuronide metabolites in AML-12 cells treated with palmitic acid as an in vitro model of hepatic steatosis.

Objectives: Strength assessment and comparison to normative values are an important benchmarking tool in human health and performance. However, population specific normative data are several decades old, lack information about adolescent and adult strength levels and are not representative of the strength levels of strength trained individuals. The purpose of this study was to develop contemporary strength norms for the squat, bench press, and deadlift using powerlifters competing in un-equipped, drug-tested competitions.

End of life care at home: The role of critical care transfer services.

Background: Most people would rather die at home than in hospital but only 18% of patients do so. Palliative care focuses on the physical, spiritual and psychosocial wellbeing of patients and their families, which should include facilitating transfers home when possible. Patients can have more autonomy over their care and be surrounded by loved ones which can have a significant impact on their quality of life.

Performance Enhancement of the Polarimetric Fibre Optical Current Sensor at JET Using Polarisation Optimisation.

To achieve optimal operation of the polarimetry-based FOCS, the light polarisation state at the input of the sensing fibre part must be close to a linear one. In the case of a FOCS deployed on a tokamak, the Joint European Torus (JET) in the present work, the long fibre optics link between the laser source and the sensing fibre modifies the polarisation in an unpredictable way, making it unclear which source polarisation state is to be set. A method for performing the necessary polarisation adjustment in a systematic way is proposed based on the FOCS analysis.

Distributed Poloidal Magnetic Field Measurement in Tokamaks Using Polarization-Sensitive Reflectometric Fiber Optic Sensor.

Determination of the poloidal magnetic field distribution in tokamaks is of prime importance for the successful operation of tokamaks. In this paper, we propose a polarization-sensitive reflectometry-based optical fiber sensor for measuring the spatial distribution of the poloidal magnetic field in tokamaks. The measurement method exploits the Rayleigh backscattering and Faraday magneto-optic effect in optical fibers.

Beneficial Effects of ε-Viniferin on Obesity and Related Health Alterations.

Viniferin is a phenolic compound belonging to the group of stilbenoids. In particular, ε-viniferin is a dimer of resveratrol, found in many plant genders, among which grapes () are a primary source. Due to the fact that ε-viniferin is mainly present in the woody parts of plants, their use as a source of this bioactive compound is a very interesting issue in a circular economy.

Food anaphylaxis in the elderly: Analysis of allergy vigilance network data from 2002 to 2021.

Background: Few studies have focused on food allergies in the elderly, even though it may persist or appear de novo.

Methods: We reviewed data for all cases of food-induced anaphylaxis in people age ≥ 60 reported to the French "Allergy Vigilance Network" (RAV) between 2002 and 2021. RAV collates data reported by French-speaking allergists regarding cases of anaphylaxis graded II to IV according to the Ring and Messmer classification.

Fusion product measurements by nuclear diagnostics in the Joint European Torus deuterium-tritium 2 campaign (invited).

A new deuterium-tritium experimental, DTE2, campaign has been conducted at the Joint European Torus (JET) between August 2021 and late December 2021. Motivated by significant enhancements in the past decade at JET, such as the ITER-like wall and enhanced auxiliary heating power, the campaign achieved a new fusion energy world record and performed a broad range of fundamental experiments to inform ITER physics scenarios and operations. New capabilities in the area of fusion product measurements by nuclear diagnostics were available as a result of a decade long enhancement program.

One of them, trans-epsilon-viniferin (ε-viniferin), is a trans-resveratrol dimer that arouses the interest of researchers in the field of human health.

Its bioavailability being low, the development of encapsulation methods would be used to overcome this issue. The aim of this study was to measure the consequences of the encapsulation of εVin in multilamellar liposomes on its pharmacokinetic parameters, metabolism and tissue distribution in rats.

Upgrade and absolute calibration of the JET scintillator-based fast-ion loss detector.

The JET FILD is a scintillator-based Fast-ion Loss Detector optimized to measure fusion-born alpha-particle losses. This work covers its upgrade and absolute calibration in preparation for the following JET DT experiments. A fast scintillator material (TG-Green) has been installed in the JET FILD.

Encapsulation of ε-Viniferin into Multi-Lamellar Liposomes: Development of a Rapid, Easy and Cost-Efficient Separation Method to Determine the Encapsulation Efficiency.

Onion-type multi-lamellar liposomes (MLLs), composed of a mixture of phosphatidylcholine and Tween 80, were analyzed for their ability to encapsulate ε-Viniferin (εVin), a resveratrol dimer. Their encapsulation efficiency (EE) was measured by UV-VIS spectroscopy using three different separation methods-ultracentrifugation, size exclusion chromatography, and a more original and advantageous one, based on adsorption filtration. The adsorption filtration method consists indeed of using syringe filters to retain the molecule of interest, and not the liposomes as usually performed.

In Vivo Genotoxicity Evaluation of a Stilbene Extract Prior to Its Use as a Natural Additive: A Combination of the Micronucleus Test and the Comet Assay.

Genotoxic data of substances that could be used as food additives are required by the European Food Safety Authority. In this sense, the use of an extract from grapevine shoots containing a stilbene richness of 99% (ST-99), due to its antioxidant and antibacterial activities, has been proposed as an alternative to sulfur dioxide in wine. The aim of this work was to study, for the first time, the in vivo genotoxic effects produced in rats orally exposed to 90, 180, or 360 mg ST-99/kg body weight at 0, 24, and 45 h.

Local delivery of corticosteroids in clinical ophthalmology: A review.

Locally administered steroids have a long history in ophthalmology for the treatment of inflammatory conditions. Anterior segment conditions tend to be treated with topical steroids whilst posterior segment conditions generally require periocular, intravitreal or systemic administration for penetration. Over recent decades, the clinical applications of periocular steroid delivery have expanded to a wide range of conditions including macular oedema from retino-vascular conditions.

Food-induced anaphylaxis in infancy compared to preschool age: A retrospective analysis.

Objective: Little is known regarding food anaphylaxis in infancy. We aimed to describe specificities of food anaphylaxis in infants (≤12 months) as compared to preschool children (1-6 years).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all food anaphylaxis cases recorded by the Allergy Vigilance Network from 2002 to 2018, in preschool children focusing on infants.
