The volume plasmon modes of a confined electron gas are engineered in a step-like semiconductor potential, which induces the formation of adjacent regions of different charge density. Each region supports spatially localized collective modes. Adjacent modes are theoretically demonstrated to couple, forming delocalized modes, which are well-described with a hybridization picture.

Tailoring the losses of optical systems within the frame of non-Hermitian physics has appeared very fruitful in the past few years. In particular, the description of exceptional points (EPs) with coupled resonators has become widespread. The on-chip realization of these functionalities is crucial for integrated nanophotonics but requires fine control techniques of the nanodevice properties.

We show that nearly-degenerate Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers may emit a set of tilted beams of individually addressable mode-locked pulses. These time localized beams feature a Gaussian profile and they are emitted in pairs with opposite transverse k-vector. Because they are phase locked, their interference leads to a non homothetic pattern in the near-field emission of the laser.

Copper-chlorophyllin is a water-soluble derivative of chlorophylls and shows low cytotoxicity and antimutagenic properties in cultured cells. It has multiple applications, including its use as a photosensitizer in photothermal therapy because of its green light-activated photothermal performance. In this work, it was copolymerized with a poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylic monomer to yield random copolymers by free radical polymerization, which showed dual temperature- and pH-dependent phase transitions in aqueous solutions.

We theoretically and experimentally study the noise correlations in an array of lasers based on a VECSEL (Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) architecture. The array of two or three lasers is created inside a planar degenerate cavity with a mask placed in a self-imaging position. Injection from each laser to its neighbors is created by diffraction, which creates a controllable complex coupling coefficient.

We report on a new approach of a low phase noise electro-optomechanical oscillator directly working in the GHz frequency range. The developed nanoscale oscillator is a one-dimensional photonic crystal made of gallium phosphide (GaP), heterogeneously integrated on silicon-on-insulator circuitry. Based on the strong interaction between the optical mode at the telecommunication wavelength and the mechanical mode in GHz, ultra-pure mechanical oscillations are enabled and directly imprinted on an optical carrier.

This review summarizes recent progress in the synergistic design strategy for thermoresponsive polymers possessing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in aqueous systems. To achieve precise control of the responsive behavior of the UCST polymers, their molecular design can benefit from a synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding with other interactions or modification of the chemical structures. The combination of UCST behavior with other stimuli-responsive properties of the polymers may yield new functional materials with potential applications such as sensors, actuators, and controlled release devices.

Emission dynamics of a multimode broadband interband semiconductor laser have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. Non-linear dynamics of a III-V semiconductor quantum well surface-emitting laser reveal the existence of a modulational instability, observed in the anomalous dispersion regime. An additional unstable region arises in the normal dispersion regime, owing to carrier dynamics, and has no analogy in systems with fast gain recovery.

Excitability, encountered in numerous fields from biology to neurosciences and optics, is a general phenomenon characterized by an all-or-none response of a system to an external perturbation of a given strength. When subject to delayed feedback, excitable systems can sustain multistable pulsing regimes, which are either regular or irregular time sequences of pulses reappearing every delay time. Here, we investigate an excitable microlaser subject to delayed optical feedback and study the emergence of complex pulsing dynamics, including periodic, quasiperiodic, and irregular pulsing regimes.

Mechanical resonators can act as excellent intermediaries to interface single photons in the microwave and optical domains due to their high quality factors. Nevertheless, the optical pump required to overcome the large energy difference between the frequencies can add significant noise to the transduced signal. Here we exploit the remarkable properties of thin-film gallium phosphide to demonstrate bi-directional on-chip conversion between microwave and optical frequencies, realized by piezoelectric actuation of a Gigahertz-frequency optomechanical resonator.

Metamaterials have played a major role in the development of optoelectronic devices due to their capability of coupling free-space radiation with active materials at the nanometer scale. In particular, unipolar photodetectors display highly improved performances when implemented into patch-antenna arrays. We study light-coupling and absorption in patch-antenna metamaterials by combining an experimental investigation, an analytical approach based on coupled mode theory and numerical simulations in order to understand how the geometrical parameters influence the electromagnetic energy transfer from the free-space to the active material.

Analysis of the genes retained in the minimized JCVI-Syn3A genome established that systems that repair or preempt metabolite damage are essential to life. Several genes known to have such functions were identified and experimentally validated, including 5-formyltetrahydrofolate cycloligase, coenzyme A (CoA) disulfide reductase, and certain hydrolases. Furthermore, we discovered that an enigmatic YqeK hydrolase domain fused to NadD has a novel proofreading function in NAD synthesis and could double as a MutT-like sanitizing enzyme for the nucleotide pool.

Significance: The primary method of COVID-19 detection is reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing. PCR test sensitivity may decrease as more variants of concern arise and reagents may become less specific to the virus.

Aim: We aimed to develop a reagent-free way to detect COVID-19 in a real-world setting with minimal constraints on sample acquisition.

While electron microscopy represents the gold standard for detection of synapses, a number of limitations prevent its broad applicability. A key method for detecting synapses is immunostaining for markers of pre- and post-synaptic proteins, which can infer a synapse based upon the apposition of the two markers. While immunostaining and imaging techniques have improved to allow for identification of synapses in tissue, analysis and identification of these appositions are not facile, and there has been a lack of tools to accurately identify these appositions.

We analyze the effect of optical feedback on the dynamics of an external-cavity passively mode-locked surface-emitting laser operating in the regime of temporal localized structures. Depending on the ratio between the cavity round trip time and the feedback delay, we show experimentally that feedback acts as a solution selector that either reinforces or hinders the appearance of one of the multistable harmonic arrangements of pulses. Our theoretical analysis reproduces well the experiment and allows us to evidence asymmetrical resonance tongues due to the parity symmetry-breaking induced by gain depletion.

Recent years have seen extraordinary progress in creating quantum states of mechanical oscillators, leading to great interest in potential applications for such systems in both fundamental as well as applied quantum science. One example is the use of these devices as transducers between otherwise disparate quantum systems. In this regard, a promising approach is to build integrated piezoelectric optomechanical devices that are then coupled to microwave circuits.
