Effects of chronic lithium treatment on retinal electrophysiologic function.

Some hypotheses suggest that lithium produces its therapeutic effect by reducing sensitivity to light at the level of the retina. In humans, acute administration of lithium is associated with a reduction in retinal light sensitivity. To determine whether similar retinal light sensitivity changes occur with chronic use, we studied 24 euthymic bipolar patients on chronic lithium treatment and 21 age- and sex-matched normal comparison subjects using electroretinography (ERG) and electro-oculography (EOG).

A second-generation linkage map of the bovine genome.

We report a bovine linkage map constructed with 1236 polymorphic DNA markers and 14 erythrocyte antigens and serum proteins. The 2990-cM map consists of a sex-specific, X chromosome linkage group and 29 sex-averaged, autosomal linkage groups with an average interval size of 2.5 cM.

Chromosomal localization of six bovine microsatellite markers.

Six lambda genomic clones containing polymorphic microsatellite (MS) markers were assigned to bovine chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 7, 13 and 24 by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Linkage data for four MS markers were presented earlier and linkage data for the remaining two on chromosome 7 and 24 are presented here. All assignments either orient or confirm the orientation of linkage groups relative to the centromere.

Notochord alters the permissiveness of myotome for pathfinding by an identified motoneuron in embryonic zebrafish.

During zebrafish development, identified motoneurons innervate cell-specific regions of each trunk myotome. One motoneuron, CaP, extends an axon along the medial surface of the ventral myotome. To learn how this pathway is established during development, the CaP axon was used as an assay to ask whether other regions of the myotome were permissive for normal CaP pathfinding.

A chromosome-specific microdissected library increases marker density on bovine chromosome 1.

Genetic resolution of bovine chromosome 1 (BTA1) linkage group was significantly increased by screening for microsatellite clones a microdissected library constructed from a bovine cell line carrying a t(1;29) translocation. Eighty-five percent of the microsatellites (ms) (46/54) identified were informative in the USDA/MARC mapping population, and 96% of these ms (44/46) linked to BTA1 (LOD > 3.0).

An integrated genetic and physical map of the bovine X chromosome.

Genotypic data for 56 microsatellites (ms) generated from maternal full sib families nested within paternal half sib pedigrees were used to construct a linkage map of the bovine X Chromosome (Chr) (BTX) that spans 150 cM (ave. interval 2.7 cM).

Changes in cerebrospinal fluid pressure and lactate concentrations during thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.

Background: Although ischemic injury to the spinal cord is a well-known complication of aortic surgery, no metabolic markers have been identified as predictors of an adverse outcome. This study evaluated the effect of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage, with and without distal femoral perfusion or moderate hypothermia on blood and CSF lactate concentrations and CSF pressure during thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.

Methods: Three nonconcurrent groups of patients were studied prospectively: patients with normal body temperature (35 degrees C) but without distal femoral bypass (n = 6), patients with normal body temperature with bypass (n = 7), and patients with hypothermia (30 degrees C) and bypass (n = 8).

Cloning and characterization of 414 polymorphic porcine microsatellites.

We report the sequences, sizes, and number of alleles of 414 new porcine microsatellites that were cloned in our laboratory and 21 microsatellites derived from GenBank DNA sequences. We also confirm the usefulness of porcine microsatellite primer pairs derived from short interdispersed elements.

Cloning and chromosomal mapping of bovine interleukin-2 receptor gamma gene.

Interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) gamma chain, a member of the cytokine receptor superfamily, forms a high-affinity receptor with IL-2R alpha and beta chains that plays an important role in interleukin-2 (IL-2) signal transduction. We have cloned and characterized the bovine IL-2Rgamma gene and corresponding cDNA. Bovine IL-2Rgamma is a single-copy gene that contains 8 exons and spans approximately 3.

Genomic organization and chromosomal mapping of the bovine Fas/APO-1 gene.

The cell-surface protein Fas (APO-1) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily and transduces apoptosis following binding of Fas ligand or exposure to certain anti-Fas antibodies. We have isolated the bovine Fas (bFas) gene and determined its genomic organization and chromosomal location. Our data indicate that bFas is a single-copy gene that contains 9 exons and spans approximately 31.

A comprehensive map of the porcine genome.

We report the highest density genetic linkage map for a livestock species produced to date. Three published maps for Sus scrofa were merged by genotyping virtually every publicly available microsatellite across a single reference population to yield 1042 linked loci, 536 of which are novel assignments, spanning 2286.2 cM (average interval 2.

The linkage map of sheep Chromosome 6 compared with orthologous regions in other species.

The genetic linkage map of sheep Chromosome (Chr) 6 has been extended to include 35 loci with the addition of 11 RFLP and 12 microsatellite loci. The sex-averaged linkage map now spans 154 cM from phosphodiesterase cyclic GMP beta polypeptide (PDE6B) to OarCP125, an anonymous sheep microsatellite. The male and female map lengths, at 180 cM and 132 cM respectively, did not differ significantly.

Physical assignments of 68 porcine cosmid and lambda clones containing polymorphic microsatellites.

Two lambda phage and 66 cosmids containing informative porcine microsatellites were assigned to 17 of 18 porcine autosomes and the X Chromosome (Chr) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). These assignments provide additional physically anchored markers to integrate the porcine physical and genetic maps.

Development of a bovine X chromosome linkage group and painting probes to assess cattle, sheep, and goat X chromosome segment homologies.

The X chromosome linkage group is conserved in placental mammals. However, X chromosome morphological differences, due to internal chromosome rearrangements, exist among mammalian species. We have developed bovine chromosome painting probes for Xp and Xq to assess segment homologies between the submetacentric bovine X chromosome and the acrocentric sheep and goat X chromosomes.

Report of the first workshop on the genetic map of bovine chromosome 23.

A report of the first workshop on the genetic map of bovine chromosome 23 (BTA23) is given. Five laboratories contributed data from 29 loci, including a total 11586 informative genotypes. The combined pedigrees represented 1930 potentially informative meioses.
