Metabolic Syndrome in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis in a Mixed Race Population: Comparison of Their Prevalences.

Background: There is a growing body of evidence suggesting the association between psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) separately with metabolic syndrome (MS) in different populations. The literature is relatively scarce in terms of comparing the prevalence of MS in PsO and PsA with controls without systemic inflammatory diseases.

Objective: We aimed to assess the prevalence of MS among patients with PsO, PsA, and a control group without systemic inflammatory disease, in addition to investigating the risks of MS occurrence and its different components in each group.

Acute Toxicity Assays with the Model: Assessment of Variables.

The use of the brine shrimp (Leach) in acute toxicity assays has great potential due to its simplicity, low cost and reproducibility. In the current study, some of the variables that can influence the reliability of the assay in terms of test organism survival, were evaluated as part of its implementation in our laboratory. The quality and type of water used, the buffer components and other parameters (salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen level), were all evaluated for optimisation purposes.

The effects of a novel direct-fed microbial (DFM) on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, digestibility, ruminal morphology, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile of finishing steers were evaluated. Single-source Angus-crossbred yearling steers (n = 144; initial body weight (BW) = 371 ± 19 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design. Steers were blocked by initial BW and randomly assigned to treatments (12 pens/treatment; 4 steers/pen).

Background: Brazil is facing increasing cycles of numbers of infected people and deaths resulting from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This situation involves a series of factors, including the behavior of the population, that can be decisive for controlling the disease.

In 2018-2019, we conducted mosquito collections in a municipal vehicle impound yard, which is 10 km from the Serra do Mar Environmental Protection Area in Santo André, SP, Brazil. Our aim is to study arboviruses in the impound yard, to understand the transmission of arboviruses in an urban environment in Brazil. We captured the mosquitoes using human-landing catches and processed them for arbovirus detection by conventional and quantitative RT-PCR assays.

This study aimed to compare the performance of a commercial bakers' yeast (MBRy) and conventional bacteria (MBRb) based membrane bioreactor integrated with nanofiltration (NF) in the removal of landfill leachate toxicity. Performances were evaluated using physicochemical analyses, toxicity tests and identification of organic compounds. The MBR and MBR were operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48h and solids retention time (SRT) of 60 d.

Pilot aerobic membrane bioreactor and nanofiltration for municipal landfill leachate treatment.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the integration of the air stripping, membrane bioreactor (MBR) and nanofiltration (NF) processes for the treatment of landfill leachate (LFL). Pretreatment by air stripping, without adjustment of pH, removed 65% of N-NH3 present in LFL. After pretreatment, the effluent was treated in MBR obtaining 44% of COD removal, and part of the N-NH3 was converted to nitrite and nitrate, which was later removed in the post-treatment.

Adhesion molecules in breast carcinoma: a challenge to the pathologist.

The role of adhesion molecules is very important both in the activation of carcinogenesis and in the differentiation of subtypes of breast carcinoma, aiding in diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic choice in these tumors. Therefore, understanding the functions and interrelationships among these molecules is crucial to the pathologist, who often uses these factors as a resource to differentiate tumors and further classify them according to a molecular point of view. Our goal is to describe the applicability and the difficulties encountered by the pathologist in the diagnosis of breast carcinoma, discussing the most commonly used markers of adhesion in routine analyses.

We have developed a two-step PCR assay that amplifies a region of the ceja-1 sequence that is specific for virulent strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
