Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are studying how to make more medicines, like vaccines and antibodies, by using special DNA sequences called iPLUS that help produce more proteins.
  • By using iPLUS, they found that they could double the amount of an important cancer treatment protein called trastuzumab in cells and boost other proteins over 100 times in yeast.
  • This research shows that iPLUS could be really useful in making vaccines and other medicines faster and cheaper by improving how genes work in cell production.

Article Synopsis
  • Sacubitril-valsartan has been shown to lower hospitalizations and death rates in heart failure patients, but there is limited real-world data on its effectiveness in older patients.
  • A study was conducted using a Spanish heart failure registry to compare elderly patients treated with sacubitril-valsartan versus those on angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) during acute heart failure hospitalization.
  • Results indicated that while sacubitril-valsartan was associated with a trend towards fewer readmissions and deaths due to heart failure compared to ACEI, these findings were not statistically significant over follow-up periods of 3 months and 1 year.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and toxicity of regorafenib in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in routine clinical practice, as well as predictive factors of effectiveness.

Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter study in patients with mCRC who received regorafenib from November 2013 to May 2020. Effectiveness was evaluated by overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Alternative polyadenylation in the 3' UTR (3' UTR-APA) is a mode of gene expression regulation, fundamental for mRNA stability, translation and localization. In the immune system, it was shown that upon T cell activation, there is an increase in the relative expression of mRNA isoforms with short 3' UTRs resulting from 3' UTR-APA. However, the functional significance of 3' UTR-APA remains largely unknown.

The present study investigates the potential of waste tires to produce a valuable adsorbent material for application in wastewater treatment. In the first stage, the pyrolysis of ground rubber tire was explored using non-isothermal and isothermal thermogravimetric analysis experiments. The effect of operating parameters, such as heating rate and pyrolysis temperature, on the pyrolysis product yields was considered.

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by the Histoplasma capsulatum. Mucosal manifestations are uncommon, but, when present, they are usually associated with pulmonary or chronic disseminated infection. The course of the disease is often related to the host immune response.
