Clinical and Radiologic Outcome of First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis Using a Human Allogeneic Cortical Bone Screw.

Background: Different fixation techniques are established for first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis, including compression screws, plates, Kirschner wires, metal- and bioabsorbable screws as well as staples. The purpose of this study was to investigate and present first clinical and radiologic results using a novel human, allogeneic cortical bone screw for arthrodesis of the first MTPJ.

Methods: Arthrodesis of the first MTPJ was performed in 31 patients with hallux rigidus.

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the German version of the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability index.

Background: The Western Ontario shoulder instability index (WOSI) is a disease-specific quality of life measurement tool with 21 items for patients with shoulder instability. Here, we report on translation and validation of the German version of the WOSI according to international guidelines.

Patients And Methods: A total of 86 patients in three groups were included in this study.

Quality of drainage blood: survival of red cells after re-transfusion and content of free hemoglobin and potassium.

Re-transfusion of drainage blood is widely used in orthopedic surgery, but objective evidence of the efficacy of re-transfusion of drainage blood in view of post-transfusion survival of RBC has not been given so far. With this study we wanted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transfusion of drainage blood collected with HandyVac autotransfusion system. In 7 patients red cells in drainage blood were labeled with biotin and percentage of labeled red cells in circulation were determined immediately after re-transfusion, and during 10 days after surgery.

Bone erosions and bone marrow edema as defined by magnetic resonance imaging reflect true bone marrow inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To investigate the pathologic nature of features termed "bone erosion" and "bone marrow edema" (also called "osteitis) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: RA patients scheduled for joint replacement surgery (metacarpophalangeal or proximal interphalangeal joints) underwent MRI on the day before surgery. The presence and localization of bone erosions and bone marrow edema as evidenced by MRI (MRI bone erosions and MRI bone marrow edema) were documented in each joint (n=12 joints).

Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) regulates osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption.

Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) plays an important role in vascular disease, transplantation, and inflammation. In animal models of acute and chronic inflammation, induction of HO-1 has anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective properties. Since inflammation is an important trigger of osteoclastogenesis, we hypothesized that HO-1 might influence osteoclastogenesis.

Interaction between synovial inflammatory tissue and bone marrow in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) leads to destruction of cartilage and bone. Whether rheumatoid arthritis also affects the adjacent bone marrow is less clear. In this study, we investigated subcortical bone marrow changes in joints from patients with RA.

The German version of the Oxford Shoulder Score--cross-cultural adaptation and validation.

Introduction: The evaluation of health-related quality of life is an established criterion for the evaluation of therapeutic measurement. Especially in the English language, a great number of different questionnaires have been developed. The original, English-language 12-item Oxford shoulder score (OSS) is a recently developed and validated patient-completed outcome measure specifically designed for the evaluation of patients suffering from shoulder pathology other than instability.
