Analysis of Candy Tobacco Imitation Products Available Online in the United States.

Introduction: Youth tobacco use remains a critical public health concern, and childhood use of candy tobacco imitation products (CTIP) is associated with cigarette use among youth. However, no research has examined the full extent of CTIP available for purchase in the United States.

Aims And Methods: We conducted a content analysis of CTIP available on English-language, US-based websites.

Barriers to clinical research participation in a diabetes randomized clinical trial.

Little is known about how barriers to research participation are perceived, affected by or interact with patient characteristics, or how they vary over the course of a clinical trial. Participants (285) in the Renin-Angiotensin System Study (RASS), a randomized clinical primary prevention study of diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy at 2 Canadian and 1 US university, rated potential barriers to research participation yearly for 5 years. Baseline barriers rated as most adversely affecting participation were: missing work; frequency of appointments and procedures; study length; number of appointments and procedures; access to study location; and physical discomfort associated with procedures.

Breaking the cycle of dependency: dual diagnosis and AFDC families.

This paper proposes that a comprehensive, long-term program with a case-management focus will produce better outcomes and be more cost-effective than the current approach to managing the illnesses of women on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (or TANF, formerly known as AFDC) who are afflicted with both drug dependency and mental illness, i.e. a dual diagnosis.

Necrotizing fasciitis arising from a suprapubic catheter site. A case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an unusual complication of gynecologic surgery. A woman developed necrotizing fasciitis at the site of suprapubic urinary catheter placement. The diagnostic criteria for necrotizing fasciitis were fulfilled by the patient, whose predisposition for the disease was undiagnosed diabetes mellitus.

Papanicolaou smear history of patients developing cervical cancer: an assessment of screening protocols.

The American Cancer Society recently has suggested changes in the frequency of Papanicolaou smear screening which, if followed, would alter current practice considerably. This study assessed the impact of the Papanicolaou smear screening interval on the prevention of advanced disease. Between July 1, 1980 and June 30, 1984, 264 women were evaluated and treated for primary epithelial carcinoma of the cervix (64% had stage I disease).

A comparison between fructose 1,6-diphosphate, glucose, or normal saline infusions and species-specific blood exchange transfusions in the treatment of bowel ischemia.

Infusion of fructose 1,6-diphosphate, (FDP), the rate-limiting substrate in anaerobic metabolism, decreases infarction in the ischemic heart. This study evaluates the effect of FDP (5% in H2O), glucose (D5W), or normal saline (N/S) infusions and species-specific blood (SSB) exchange transfusions on mortality rates and bowel infarction in rats with intestinal ischemia. One hundred twenty Sprague-Dawley male rats (50 to 75 gm) were divided into six experimental groups.

Heterotopic pregnancy after in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.

We have presented a second case of heterotopic pregnancy after IVF-ET. The most likely cause is direct extrusion of embryos through the tubal ostia by the hydrostatic pressure associated with ET. The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy must be suspected clinically and not ruled out on the sonographic demonstration of an intrauterine pregnancy.
