Per-operative COVID-19 modifications for oculoplastic service: patients perspective and regional review of practice of a protective draping technique.

Purpose: COVID-19 has posed problems for oculoplastic surgeons. One issue we felt needed to be addressed was the way patients are draped for surgery. Traditionally patients are draped with their full face exposed, and as a result, aerosols generated from both the patient and surgical team put the other party at risk.

Imagining an Orientation Built on Trust.

To streamline competency assessment documentation during orientation, we developed a comprehensive, three-phase plan, consisting of a tiered skills acquisition model, entrustable professional activities, and the full incorporation of Donna Wright's recommendations for initial competency development, allowing for the transition away from the traditional skills checklist (Wright, 2005). We were able to reduce orientation time and preceptor confusion while increasing orientation process satisfaction by the end of our revisions.

Physical educators' beliefs and self-reported behaviors toward including students with autism spectrum disorder.

With an increase in the presence of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the general physical education (GPE) classroom, understanding the current state of GPE teachers' beliefs and behaviors for including these students is warranted. The current study aimed to examine the beliefs and self-reported behaviors of GPE teachers' inclusion of students with ASD. In addition, the study examined potential factors affecting their inclusion behaviors.

Optimizing nasal potential difference analysis for CFTR modulator development: assessment of ivacaftor in CF subjects with the G551D-CFTR mutation.

Nasal potential difference (NPD) is used as a biomarker of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) activity. We evaluated methods to detect changes in chloride and sodium transport by NPD based on a secondary analysis of a Phase II CFTR-modulator study. Thirty-nine subjects with CF who also had the G551D-CFTR mutation were randomized to receive ivacaftor (Kalydeco™; also known as VX-770) in four doses or placebo twice daily for at least 14 days.

Alfentanil sedation for oculoplastic surgery: the patient experience.

Purpose: A number of agents have previously been reported to be safe and effective for sedation and analgesia in ophthalmic surgery under local anaesthesia, but there has been no previous patient-focused assessment of this form of conscious sedation. We present a patient satisfaction survey, including a validated pain score, for patients undergoing oculoplastic procedures under local anaesthesia with alfentanil sedation.

Methods: A prospective, non-randomized, questionnaire-based study of the experience, satisfaction and pain scores of consecutive patients undergoing oculoplastic procedures under local anaesthesia with alfentanil sedation at University Hospital, Coventry, UK, under the care of one Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon between 2006 and 2009.

A new technique of alfentanil-induced conscious sedation for oculoplastic surgery.

This technique describes a new painless method of injecting local anaesthetic in a highly pain-sensitive area of the body-around the eyes. We describe how a new technique using a bolus of intravenous alfentanil can help alleviate patient discomfort during the injection of the local anaesthetic and also reduce the amount of local anaesthetic injected. This also helps oculoplastic surgeons to work in a relaxed environment, whilst still utilizing the efficiencies that are provided by an ambulatory day surgery unit.

Developmental studies of Hanford miniature swine exposed to 60-Hz electric fields.

Evaluations of reproductive and developmental toxicology, including teratology, were included as part of a broad screening study in Hanford Miniature swine (HMS) to detect effects of exposure to electric fields. One group (E) was exposed to a uniform, vertical, 60-Hz, 30-kV/m electric field for 20 h/day, 7 days/week; sham-exposed (SE) swine were housed in a separate, environmentally equivalent building. The first generation (F0) gilts were bred after 4 months of study; some were killed for teratologic assays at 100 days of gestation (dg), and the others produced an F1 generation of offspring.
