Background: There is increasing interest in two-agent single-pump intravenous infusions for anesthesia and sedation in pediatric patients. Propofol-remifentanil is one such mixture. The poor miscibility of such admixtures when remifentanil is added in very high concentrations and when the admixtures are maintained in static conditions has been demonstrated; however, these physiochemical properties have not been examined in clinically relevant concentrations or settings.

Introduction: the aim of this study was to assess the validity of a novel wearable sweat rate monitor against an array of sweat analysis techniques which determine sudomotor function when exercising moderately under heat stress. Construct validity was determined utilising a 5-day short-term heat acclimation (STHA) intervention.

Methods: Nineteen healthy individuals (age: 41 ± 23 years, body mass: 74.

Background: Mortality dramatically rises with the onset of symptoms in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Surgery is indicated when symptoms become apparent or when there is ventricular decompensation. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in combination with exercise echocardiography can unmask symptoms and provides valuable information regarding contractile reserve.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability of five different sweat analysis techniques which measure; whole body sweat rate [WBSR], local sweat rate [LSR] (via technical absorbent [TA] method and KuduSmart monitor), sweat conductivity [SC] and sweat gland activation [SGA] in a female population when exercising moderately under heat stress.

Methods: Fourteen females (age; 26 ± 7 years, body mass; 66.5 ± 7.

We assessed the short-term effects of varying the volume of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on psychological and physiological responses of 23 healthy adult males ( M = 21 years; M peak oxygen uptake [VO] = 47.2 ml·kg·min). Participants were randomly assigned to low- and very-low-volume HIIT groups and engaged in nine supervised exercise sessions over three weeks.

As the volume, accuracy and precision of digital geographic information have increased, concerns regarding individual privacy and confidentiality have come to the forefront. Not only do these challenge a basic tenet underlying the advancement of science by posing substantial obstacles to the sharing of data to validate research results, but they are obstacles to conducting certain research projects in the first place. Geospatial cryptography involves the specification, design, implementation and application of cryptographic techniques to address privacy, confidentiality and security concerns for geographically referenced data.

Resting echocardiography measurements are poor predictors of exercise capacity and symptoms in patients with heart failure (HF). Stress echocardiography may provide additional information and can be expressed using left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), or diastolic parameters (E/E'), but LVEF has some major limitations. Systolic annular velocity (S') provides a measure of longitudinal systolic function, which is relatively easy to obtain and shows a good relationship with exercise capacity.

Objective: To identify factors associated with short-term (30-day) and overall survival rates in cats that underwent renal transplantation surgery (RTS).

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Animals: 94 cats that underwent RTS from 1998 through 2010.

Background: The purpose of this study was to characterize the physiological demands of a riding session comprising different types of recreational horse riding in females.

Methods: Sixteen female recreational riders (aged 17 to 54 years) completed an incremental cycle ergometer exercise test to determine peak oxygen consumption (VO₂peak) and a 45-minute riding session based upon a British Horse Society Stage 2 riding lesson (including walking, trotting, cantering and work without stirrups). Oxygen consumption (VO₂), from which metabolic equivalent (MET) and energy expenditure values were derived, was measured throughout.

Introduction: This case report details the second described case of Whipple's disease-related thrombocytopenia in the medical literature. Whipple's disease is a rare multisystem infection caused by the actinomycete Tropheryma whipplei, first described by George Whipple in 1907. The key clinical manifestations are weight loss, diarrhoea and malabsorption, but arthralgia and endocarditis are also well described.

Background: Excess alcohol consumption is a major public health issue in Hungary, with high mortality rates from alcohol disease. In addition, excess alcohol consumption has been found to differ by socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Methods: The spatial pattern of mortality from alcoholic liver disease across Hungary for the period 2005 and 2010, at municipality level, was investigated by sex using Bayesian modelling.

Background: Resting echocardiographic measures of cardiac function such as left ventricular ejection fraction correlate poorly with exercise capacity. Assessment during exercise using measures less dependent on hemodynamic loading conditions, such as tissue Doppler imaging (TDI), may more accurately characterize the relationship between cardiac function and exercise capacity.

Methods And Results: One hundred one subjects with various cardiac diagnoses underwent exercise stress echocardiography with simultaneous cardiopulmonary gas exchange analysis.

Public concern about possible health effects of EMF radiation from mobile phone masts has led to an increase of epidemiological studies and health risk assessments which, in turn, require adequate methods of exposure estimation. Difficulties in exposure modelling are exacerbated both by the complexity of the propagation processes, and the need to obtain estimates for large study populations in order to provide sufficient statistical power to detect or exclude the small relative risks that might exist. Use of geographical information system (GIS) techniques offers the means to make such computations efficiently.

Introduction: There is no national register of childhood type 1 diabetes mellitus for England. Our aim was to assess the feasibility of using routine hospital admissions data as a surrogate for a childhood diabetes register across England, and to create a geographically referenced childhood diabetes dataset for use in epidemiologic studies and health service research.

Methods: Hospital Episodes Statistics data for England from April 1992 to March 2006 referring to a type 1 diabetes diagnosis in 0-14 yr olds were cleaned to approximate an incident dataset.

Background: Recently, research focus has returned to amenable mortality to health care, despite the decreasing trend, as it remains a significant contributor to social and economic loss due to premature death. This article assesses the trends of amenable mortality over time and, its spatial inequalities with respect to deprivation, in Hungary.

Methods: An ecological analysis of mortality amenable to health care was carried out using smoothed indirectly standardized mortality ratios, calculated by full hierarchical Bayesian methods, at municipality level.

Background: The authors analyse the spatio-temporal variations of the incidence of bladder cancer between 1973 and 2004 in Utah at the census tract level (496 areas) to highlight areas of high and low relative risks that remained so throughout the 32 year period. Using these identified areas, a novel strategy is used to carry out a geographical case-control study of association between the risk of bladder cancer and presence of Toxic Release Inventory sites, where areas with stable high RRs are 'case areas' and all remaining areas with stable non increased risks are 'control areas'.

Results: The time trend of bladder cancer risk fluctuated over the study period: A steady decrease was observed, followed by an abrupt increase from 1992 to 2004.

Background: Interval training is recommended for chronic heart failure patients (CHF), but specific guidelines on setting appropriate workloads have not been fully established. The aim of this study was to compare a traditional method of interval training prescription with a protocol specifically designed for CHF.

Methods: Ten CHF and 7 healthy controls performed 2 maximal incremental cycle tests to determine interval training workload; a standard test (10Wmin(-)(1)) and a steep test (25W.

Background: We conducted spatial analyses to determine the geographic variation of cancer at the neighbourhood level (dissemination areas or DAs) within the area of a single Ontario public health unit, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, covering a population of 238,326 inhabitants. Cancer incidence data between 1999 and 2003 were obtained from the Ontario Cancer Registry and were geocoded down to the level of DA using the enhanced Postal Code Conversion File. The 2001 Census of Canada provided information on the size and age-sex structure of the population at the DA level, in addition to information about selected census covariates, such as average neighbourhood income.
