We study numerically and experimentally the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from rectangular metagratings of V-shaped gold nanoantennas. We show that by carefully engineering the array pitch to steer the diffraction orders toward the single antenna emission, the extracted signal is maximized. This enhancement is attributed to the angular overlap between the radiation pattern and array factor and is comparable to the improvement yielded by the coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with local modes.

Over the past 20 years, hybrid plasmonics for nanoemitters of light or for nanoabsorbers, based on weak or strong coupling between metallic nanocavities and active media (emissive or absorbing entities), have given rise to important research efforts. One of the main current challenges is the control of the nanoscale spatial distribution and associated symmetry of the active medium in the vicinity of the metallic nanoparticles. In this review, we first recall the main principles of weak and strong coupling by stressing the importance of controlling the spatial distribution of the active medium and present the main approaches developed for achieving this control.

Flow cytometry is a powerful quantitative assay supporting high-throughput collection of single-cell data with a high dynamic range. For flow cytometry to yield reproducible data with a quantitative relationship to the underlying biology, however, requires that (1) appropriate process controls are collected along with experimental samples, (2) these process controls are used for unit calibration and quality control, and (3) data are analyzed using appropriate statistics. To this end, this chapter describes methods for quantitative flow cytometry through the addition of process controls and analyses, thereby enabling better development, modeling, and debugging of engineered biological organisms.

We describe the case of an infant who presented with simple rhinovirus/enterovirus bronchiolitis whose condition worsened with rapid progression to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). The patient was presumed to have either primary or secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), and treatment was initiated using dexamethasone, anakinra, and intravenous immunoglobulin to modulate the immune system. Due to the organ dysfunction, the use of etoposide was avoided and instead, emapalumab, an interferon gamma antagonist, was administered at a dose of 6 mg/kg.

There are several critical events that occur in the uterus during early pregnancy which are necessary for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. These events include blastocyst implantation, uterine decidualization, uterine neoangiogenesis, differentiation of trophoblast stem cells into different trophoblast cell lineages, and formation of a placenta. These processes involve several different cell types within the pregnant uterus.

During early pregnancy in humans and rodents, uterine stromal cells undergo a remarkable differentiation to form the decidua, a transient maternal tissue that supports the growing fetus. It is important to understand the key decidual pathways that orchestrate the proper development of the placenta, a key structure at the maternal-fetal interface. We discovered that ablation of expression of the transcription factor Runx1 in decidual stromal cells in a conditional -null mouse model () causes fetal lethality during placentation.
