Objectives: The present study aimed at exploring the association between eveningness and lifestyle-related variables, that is, body mass index, alcohol, and cigarette consumption, in adults (18-40years), focusing on the possible moderator effect of age and the role of sleep disturbances and circadian misalignment (social jetlag).

Methods: A web-based survey was administered to 437 participants, covering demographics, lifestyle-related variables, chronotype, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness. A subset of 206 participants wore a wrist actigraph for a week, allowing the creation of a sleep health index within the RU-SATED framework.

Introduction: Asymmetric electromyographic (EMG) activity during teeth clenching has been linked to cognitive impairment, as evaluated by the Spinnler-Tognoni matrices test, and to asymmetric pupil size (anisocoria). Anisocoria indicates an asymmetric Locus Coeruleus activity, leading to an asymmetric hemispheric excitability worsening cognitive performance. Bite splint wearing corrects EMG asymmetry, reduces anisocoria and improves cognitive performance.

The formation of congestion on an urban road network is a key issue for the development of sustainable mobility in future smart cities. In this work, we propose a reductionist approach by studying the stationary states of a simple transport model using a random process on a graph, where each node represents a location and the link weights give the transition rates to move from one node to another, representing the mobility demand. Each node has a maximum flow rate and a maximum load capacity, and we assume that the average incoming flow equals the outgoing flow.

In this paper we analyze the adiabatic crossing of a resonance for Hamiltonian systems when a double-resonance condition is satisfied by the linear frequency at an elliptic fixed point. We discuss in detail the phase-space structure on a class of Hamiltonians and area-preserving maps with an elliptic fixed point in the presence of a time-dependent exciter. Various regimes have been identified and carefully studied.

Background: The aim of this study is to assess whether a strategy combining spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) with both pressure support (PS) and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and extended use of post-extubation non-invasive ventilation (NIV) (extensively-assisted weaning) would shorten the time until successful extubation as compared with SBT with T-piece (TP) and post-extubation NIV performed in selected patients as advocated by guidelines (standard weaning), in difficult-to-wean patients from mechanical ventilation.

Methods: The study is a single-center prospective open label, randomized controlled superiority trial with two parallel groups and balanced randomization with a 1:1 ratio. Eligible patients were intubated patients mechanically ventilated for more than 24 h who failed their first SBT using TP.

The efficient detection of chaotic behavior in orbits of a complex dynamical system is an active domain of research. Several indicators have been proposed, and new ones have recently been developed in view of improving the performance of chaos detection by means of numerical simulations. The challenge is to predict chaotic behavior based on the analysis of orbits of limited length.

The present study aimed at evaluating how post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are associated with rest-activity circadian and sleep-related parameters, assessed both subjectively (via questionnaires) and objectively (via actigraphy). Specifically, we explored whether chronotype could moderate the association between sleep/circadian parameters and PTSS. Participants ( = 120 adults; mean age 35.

We introduce the Random Walk Approximation (RWA), a new method to approximate the stationary solution of master equations describing stochastic processes taking place on graphs. Our approximation can be used for all processes governed by non-linear master equations without long-range interactions and with a conserved number of entities, which are typical in biological systems, such as gene regulatory or chemical reaction networks, where no exact solution exists. For linear systems, the RWA becomes the exact result obtained from the maximum entropy principle.

Objective: Although the association between chronotype and mood disorders has been consistently reported, conversely, attempts to measure the association between chronotype and anxiety symptoms have generated inconsistent results. We aimed at evaluating whether chronotype (assessed through subjective and objective measures) is associated with lifetime mood and panic-agoraphobic spectrum symptoms in healthy controls (HCs) and in patients with bipolar disorder (BD).

Methods: Overall, 173 subjects, patients with BD in euthymic phase ( 76) and HC ( 97), were evaluated through the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ), actigraphy monitoring and mood and panic-agoraphobic spectrum self-report (MOODS-SR and PAS-SR).

In this paper, results concerning the phenomenon of adiabatic trapping into resonance for a class of quasi-integrable maps and Hamiltonians with a time-dependent exciter are presented and discussed in detail. The applicability of the results about trapping efficiency for Hamiltonian systems to the maps considered is proven by using perturbation theory. This makes possible to determine explicit scaling laws for the trapping properties.

The COVID-19 pandemic required communities throughout the world to deal with unknown threats. Using Twitter data, this study aimed to detect reactions to the outbreak in Italy and to evaluate the relationship between measures derived from social media (SM) with both national epidemiological data and reports on the violations of the restrictions. The dynamics of time-series about tweets counts, emotions expressed, and themes discussed were evaluated using Italian posts regarding COVID-19 from 25 February to 4 May 2020.

Background: PEEP selection in severe COVID-19 patients under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is challenging as no study has assessed the alveolar recruitability in this setting. The aim of the study was to compare lung recruitability and the impact of PEEP on lung aeration in moderate and severe ARDS patients with or without ECMO, using computed tomography (CT).

Methods: We conducted a two-center prospective observational case-control study in adult COVID-19-related patients who had an indication for CT within 72 h of ARDS onset in non-ECMO patients or within 72  h after ECMO onset.

The use of exogenous melatonin (exo-MEL) as a sleep-promoting drug has been under extensive debate due to the lack of consistency of its described effects. In this study, we conduct a systematic and comprehensive review of the literature on the chronobiotic, sleep-inducing, and overall sleep-promoting properties of exo-MEL. To this aim, we first describe the possible pharmacological mechanisms involved in the sleep-promoting properties and then report the corresponding effects of exo-MEL administration on clinical outcomes in: a) healthy subjects, b) circadian rhythm sleep disorders, c) primary insomnia.
