COVID-19 and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults with High-Cardiovascular Risk: A Post Hoc Analysis.

Cognitive decline has been reported as a short-term sequela in patients hospitalized for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Whether COVID-19 is associated with late cognitive impairment in older free-living individuals with high cardiovascular risk, a group at greater risk of cognitive decline, is unknown. We determined this association of COVID-19 through a longitudinal evaluation of post-COVID-19 cognitive performance and impairment as post hoc analysis in 5,179 older adults (48% female) with mean (SD) age 68.

Urban Flood Drifters (UFDs): Onset of movement.

Despite their catastrophic implications in flood events, the mobilization and transport of large, loose objects -termed Urban Flood Drifters (UFDs)- are often overlooked in flood management. These objects are inherent to anthropogenic activities, but are not designed to remain stable under flooding conditions, nor are usually considered in flood risk studies. This oversight stems from our limited understanding of how flowing water interacts with these heterogeneous objects.

Catalytic enhancement of production of solar thermochemical fuels: opportunities and limitations.

Solar thermochemical fuels are a promising low-carbon alternative to conventional fossil fuels, which must be swiftly phased out to mitigate the consequences of climate change. Thermochemical cycles powered by concentrating solar energy at high temperatures have demonstrated efficiency in the conversion of solar to chemical energy exceeding 5% and have been assayed in pilot scale facilities of up to 50 kW. This conversion route implies the use of a solid oxygen carrier that enables CO and HO splitting, generally operating in two consecutive stages.

Congenital bilateral clinical anophthalmia and brachygnathia superior in a fighting bull calf.

This study describes a case of a 20-day-old male fighting bull with bilateral clinical anophthalmia and brachygnathia superior whose dam was 12.5 years old and was mistakenly dewormed with ivermectin intramuscularly in the first third of gestation in a livestock farm. A macroscopic examination of the carcass was performed, with a special focus on the ocular components.

Electronic structure and high-temperature thermochemistry of BaZrO perovskite from first-principles calculations.

ABO perovskites are attractive candidates for high-temperature mixed ionic electronic conduction processes, due to their ability to produce mixed oxidation states and accommodate oxygen vacancies. Here, we examine the electronic structure and high-temperature thermochemistry of stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric cubic BaZrO perovskites for high defect concentration (δ = 0-0.5) using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations.

Optimization of the magnetic field homogeneity of circular and conical coil pairs.

The magnetic field generated by a pair of coaxial circular loops is analyzed in order to find the optimum separation between the loops for each value of a prescribed homogeneity. For the maximum heterogeneities considered here, 0.1%, 1%, and 10%, the optimum loop spacing is obtained following a graphical procedure so that the length of the homogeneous field region along the axis is the longest possible.

Global effects of non-native tree species on multiple ecosystem services.

Non-native tree (NNT) species have been transported worldwide to create or enhance services that are fundamental for human well-being, such as timber provision, erosion control or ornamental value; yet NNTs can also produce undesired effects, such as fire proneness or pollen allergenicity. Despite the variety of effects that NNTs have on multiple ecosystem services, a global quantitative assessment of their costs and benefits is still lacking. Such information is critical for decision-making, management and sustainable exploitation of NNTs.

[Stereotactic body radiation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma: Results from a retrospective multicentre study].

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to describe local control, overall survival, progression-free survival and toxicity of CyberKnife-based stereotactic body radiation therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Material And Methods: Records of all the patients treated for hepatocellular carcinoma at the Eugene-Marquis cancer centre, Rennes and the Bretonneau hospital, Tours (France), between November 2010 and December 2016, were reviewed. Radiation therapy was performed as a salvage treatment, while awaiting liver transplantation or if no other treatment was possible.

Ocular Hypertension/Glaucoma in Minipigs: Episcleral Veins Cauterization and Microbead Occlusion Methods.

Two methods to induce elevation of the intraocular pressure (experimental glaucoma) are described in the present chapter. The first method is based on increasing the post-trabecular resistance to aqueous outflow by cauterizing the episcleral veins (EVC). This method allows the observation of ultrastructural changes in the trabecular meshwork (TM) without interfering with any structure within the eye such as TM, ciliary body, and/or the Retina.

Magnetic field homogeneity of a conical coaxial coil pair.

An analytical study of the magnetic field created by a double-conical conducting sheet is presented. The analysis is based on the expansion of the magnetic field in terms of Legendre polynomials. It is demonstrated analytically that the angle of the conical surface that produces a nearly homogeneous magnetic field coincides with that of a pair of loops that fulfills the Helmholtz condition.

Diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced CT-scan in sinusoidal obstruction syndrome induced by chemotherapy of colorectal liver metastases: Radio-pathological correlation.

Purpose: Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is a likely side effect of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) chemotherapy. This study aimed to assess computed tomography scan (CT-scan) performance for SOS diagnosis for patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NC) prior to CRLM surgery, comparing obtained results with pathological gold standard.

Methods: Preoperative CT-scans of 67 patients who had received a NC prior to liver resection for CRLM from 2011 to 2016 were retrospectively analysed.

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FINDINGS IN A DOG WITH SPONTANEOUS TRANSMURAL MIGRATION OF A TEXTILOMA INTO THE CECUM.

A 3-year-old spayed female dog was presented with 3-month history of severe bilateral uveitis subsequent to previous ovariohysterectomy. Physical examination revealed moderate abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed a nonobstructive heterogeneous mass-like lesion with a speckled gas pattern (spongiform pattern) within the cecum.

Phacoemulsification considerations in nonhuman primates.

Purpose: To describe the pre-surgical, surgical, and post-surgical considerations for phacoemulsification in non-human primates.

Methods: Records of non-human primates that underwent phacoemulsification by the Ophthalmology Services of FHCV-UAB and HCV-UM, between 2003 and 2009 were reviewed.

Results: Five primates were represented: one gorilla, one chimpanzee, one pygmy marmoset, one orangutan, and one chacma baboon.

Factors influencing disease progression in autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia and spastic paraplegia.

Objectives: To evaluate disease progression and determine validity of clinical tools for therapeutic trials.

Design: Prospective cohort study (36 months).

Setting: Referral center.

Morphology of retinal vessels in the optic disk in a Göttingen minipig experimental glaucoma model.

Objective: To compare the morphology of normal, healthy Gottingen minipig retinal vessels of the optic disk with experimentally induced glaucomatous optic disks in order to identify the glaucomatous excavation. Present results were compared to human glaucoma findings.

Procedure: Sixteen eyes from eight Göttingen minipigs were studied using fundoscopic photography and fluorescein angiography.

Quantitative assessment of the evolution of cerebellar signs in spinocerebellar ataxias.

Background: Responsive ataxia rating scales are essential for determining outcome measures in clinical trials.

Methods: We evaluated the responsiveness over time of the composite cerebellar functional severity score, a quantitative score measuring cerebellar ataxia in 133 patients with autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCA), which were prospectively evaluated at inclusion and after one-year of follow-up. A more responsive tool was developed, the Cerebellar Functional Severity score writing, incorporating the writing test at dominant hand to the Cerebellar Functional Severity score.

[Imaging of anorectal malformations in the neonatal period].

Purpose: The classification of anorectal malformations (ARM) as high or low is based on clinical and anatomical characteristics. It has an impact on the surgical management but also on the functional prognosis. In the absence of consensus, our goal was to determine the value of imaging in the neonatal period for diagnosis and management of infants with ARM.

Calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in dogs with spontaneous chronic kidney disease at different stages of severity.

Background: Studies in dogs with experimental chronic kidney disease (CKD) have demonstrated that abnormalities of calcium-phosphorus (Ca-P) homeostasis occur frequently and have a negative effect on kidney function and survival. However, the prevalence of these alterations in dogs with naturally occurring CKD at different stages of severity has not yet been investigated.

Hypothesis: Abnormalities of Ca-P metabolism occur early in the course of CKD with an increased prevalence in more severe stages.

Ritz's method is applied to calculate accurate values of the lowest non-dimensional natural frequencies of a freely vibrating isotropic cube. The dependence of such frequencies and their quotients on Poisson's ratio is established. Vibration of a cube caused by percussion is detected at a point by a laser interferometer.

Serum phosphorus concentrations in dogs with leishmaniosis at different stages of chronic kidney disease.

Serum phosphorus concentrations were measured in 155 dogs with leishmaniosis at different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and in 54 healthy dogs. CKD was classified into six stages, as follows: stage 0 (dogs with no evidence of CKD), serum creatinine (SCr) less than 125 micromol/l and urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) less than 0.2; stage 1A, SCr less than 125 micromol/l and UPC 0.

Pharmacokinetics of danofloxacin after single dose intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous administration to loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta.

The single-dose disposition kinetics of the antibiotic danofloxacin were determined in clinically normal loggerhead turtles (n = 6) after intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SC) and intramuscular (IM) administration of 6 mg kg(-1) bodyweight. Danofloxacin concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The concentration-time data were analyzed by non-compartmental kinetic methods.
