The effect of cryotherapy on normal striated muscle was investigated using 18 adult male rats. Animals were divided into two groups, an experimental cryotherapy group and a control group receiving sham treatment. After the surgical procedure animals were allowed to equilibrate and vessel diameters, macromolecular leakage and blood flow were assessed before the cremaster muscle was frozen to -60 degrees C.

The effect of cryosurgery on normal liver and liver tumour was investigated using 60 adult male rats. Animals were divided into four groups Group A implanted tumour/cryosurgery (n = 19), Group B normal liver/cryosurgery (n = 17), Group C normal liver/sham cryosurgery (n = 10) and Group D implanted tumour/sham cryosurgery (n = 14). At laparotomy animals were injected into the left lateral lobe of the liver with 10(5) HSN fibrosarcoma cells or vehicle.

Cryosurgery is a useful tool to treat unresectable liver carcinoma. In addition to the local effects of freezing, cryosurgery is thought to affect host immune response. We tested this by measuring natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity following cryosurgery of normal liver and an implanted liver tumour in the rat.

Biliary cystadenoma is a rare cystic tumour of biliary origin. We report on the ultrasound, CT and angiographic appearances of an extra-hepatic biliary cystadenoma arising from the left main hepatic duct with compression of the quadrate lobe. We also describe the histological finding of adenomyomatosis of the gall-bladder in association with the cystadenoma, an association not previously reported.

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome is a benign condition of unknown aetiology, usually found in young adults. The main clinical complaint is of rectal bleeding, often with change in bowel habit. The radiological findings in 17 patients with histologically proven solitary rectal ulcer syndrome, seen at the General Infirmary at Leeds over an 8-year period, are presented.
