Purpose: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of smartphone photographs, taken at the emergency department (ED) and shared with hand surgeons, in identifying critical circulatory issues and neurovascular bundle injury, as well as tendon and bone injuries.

Methods: The photographs of hand injuries of 50 patients who were referred to our ED between January 2020 and January 2022 were used to design a questionnaire. This questionnaire, including closed-ended questions about the injured structures, was shared with a group of hand surgeons via a WhatsApp group in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a prevalent orthopedic issue that often requires symptomatic rather than curative treatments; this study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of percutaneous drilling as a minimally invasive treatment option.
  • The study involved 31 patients who underwent percutaneous drilling from 2018 to 2021, assessing various demographic factors and measuring pain levels and grip strength before and after the procedure using several scoring systems.
  • Results showed significant improvements in pain and function over 12 months, with many patients reporting excellent to good outcomes and an increase in grip strength, suggesting that percutaneous drilling is an effective treatment for chronic lateral epicondylitis with aesthetic benefits due to minimal scarring.

Recent studies on fibular osteotomy for varus gonarthrosis and possible subsequent biomechanical changes have attracted increasing attention to the topic. Existing studies have focused mainly on proximal fibular osteotomy with short follow-up periods. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the alignment of the coronal plane of the ankle and knee joints in patients who underwent vascularized fibula graft harvest (VFGH).

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the impact of tumour-related and surgical factors on the recurrence of giant cell tumours of tendon sheath. A total of 95 patients were treated at our institution between February 2012 and March 2021. We identified the factors most likely to be associated with recurrence from evaluation of classification, neurovascular invasion, bone erosion and joint invasion.

Unlabelled: Secondary hypogammaglobulinemia (SHG) is characterized by a decrease in total serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels and can lead to immunodeficiency associated with recurrent and severe infections and is a common complication of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). SHG also increases with the treatment of CLL. Ibrutinib is one of these treatments and acts by inhibiting bruton tyrosine kinase.

Introduction: We evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of capitellar fractures treated with modified screw insertion (inserting the first fixation screw anteroposteriorly and the second screw posteroanteriorly), a technique that can be applied with a minimally invasive lateral elbow approach.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-one isolated capitellum fractures that were surgically treated were included in the study. Fixation was achieved with two headless cannulated compression screws placed in anteroposterior and posteroanterior order using the modified lateral elbow approach.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate clinical results, femoral head survival, and the need for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with precollapse osteonecrosis of the femoral head (OFH) (Steinberg stage II and III) treated by free vascularized fibula graft (FVFG) application.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 54 hips of 47 patients (39 males, eight females; mean age 36 ± 14 years) who underwent FVFG due to OFH, with at least two years of follow-up. The patient data, including Harris Hip Score (HHS), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and conversion to THA, were documented.

Partial deficiency of distal radial and volar cartilage plate growth is the main pathology in Madelung's deformity. Surgical treatment can use a Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) external fixator, which provides simultaneous multiplanar correction and lengthening after radial osteotomy, sparing Vickers' ligament and the ulna. We sought to evaluate the radiological and functional results of Madelung's deformity correction by TSF, by retrospectively analyzing eight Madelung's deformities in seven patients between August 2011 and May 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three fixation techniques (plate-screw, tension band, intramedullary nail) for olecranon osteotomy in patients with intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus.
  • A total of 37 out of 52 patients were included, with various functional evaluations conducted including joint motion, pain assessment, and strength measurements over an average follow-up of 44 months.

Objective: Patients with solid malignancies are more vulnerable to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection than the healthy population. The outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in highly immunosuppressed populations, such as in patients with hematological malignancies, is a point of interest. We aimed to analyze the symptoms, complications, intensive care unit admissions, and mortality rates of patients with hematological malignancies infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Turkey.

Purpose: Opening-wedge osteotomy of the ulna restores normal ulnar length and corrects the angulation of the ulna in patients with chronic Monteggia fracture-dislocations. In addition, this eases the reduction of the radial head. Morbidity caused by annular ligament reconstruction surgery can be prevented by preserving the intact annular ligament.

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), supported by high-dose chemotherapy, is the prevalent option for multiple myeloma (MM) treatment in candidates suitable for transplantation. Although granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) supported cyclophosphamide (CY) is used as the pre-ASCT mobilization regimen, there is no consensus on the optimal dosage of CY. Thus, in this study, we examined the results of 47 MM patients, who underwent ASCT after mobilization with intermediate (ID) or low-dose (LD) CY treatment supported with G-CSF.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the link between preoperative albumin levels and morbidities and mortalities in major burn patients, finding hypoalbuminemia to be common due to increased capillary permeability during shock.
  • Data was collected from 61 patients regarding their preoperative albumin levels, intraoperative complications, and postoperative outcomes over two years, revealing various statistics comparing those with albumin levels below and above 2 gr/dL.
  • Results indicated that while lower albumin levels correlated with more complications and higher mortality rates, the findings were not statistically significant, and a preoperative albumin cut-off of 2.3 gr/dL was suggested for affecting postoperative morbidity.

Objectives: Wide-awake anesthesia is a type of local anesthesia consisting of a combined application of lidocaine, epinephrine, and bicarbonate and has a wide potential in hand surgery as it offers the advantage of being applied without sedation and without using a tourniquet. In light of recent studies, its use has increased with the disappearance of the belief among surgeons that epinephrine can cause circulatory disturbance in fingers.

Methods: Patients with finger pathologies who were operated upon at the Baltalimani Bone Diseases Teaching and Research Hospital between January 2015 and February 2016 were divided into two groups according to anesthesia type: wide-awake anesthesia and axillary block anesthesia, with 52 patients in each group.
