The coordination behavior of disilylated stannylenes toward zerovalent group 10 transition metal complexes was studied. This was accomplished by reactions of PEt3 adducts of disilylated stannylenes with zerovalent group 10 transition metal complexes. The thus obtained products differed between the first row example nickel and its heavier congeners.

The "DGPPN-Cohort": A national collaboration initiative by the German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN) for establishing a large-scale cohort of psychiatric patients.

The German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN) has committed itself to establish a prospective national cohort of patients with major psychiatric disorders, the so-called DGPPN-Cohort. This project will enable the scientific exploitation of high-quality data and biomaterial from psychiatric patients for research. It will be set up using harmonised data sets and procedures for sample generation and guided by transparent rules for data access and data sharing regarding the central research database.

Formation of magnetite nanoparticles at low temperature: from superparamagnetic to stable single domain particles.

The room temperature co-precipitation of ferrous and ferric iron under alkaline conditions typically yields superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles below a size of 20 nm. We show that at pH  =  9 this method can be tuned to grow larger particles with single stable domain magnetic (> 20-30 nm) or even multi-domain behavior (> 80 nm). The crystal growth kinetics resembles surprisingly observations of magnetite crystal formation in magnetotactic bacteria.

Aggressive locoregional management of recurrent peritoneal sarcomatosis.

Background And Objectives: Peritoneal sarcomatosis responds poorly to systemic chemotherapy and demonstrates high rates of recurrence after resection. We sought to determine perioperative and oncologic outcomes after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) for recurrent sarcomatosis.

Methods: We reviewed 15 patients undergoing 17 CRS/HIPEC for recurrent sarcomatosis from a prospective database.

The formation of crystalline materials from solution is usually described by the nucleation and growth theory, where atoms or molecules are assumed to assemble directly from solution. More complex pathways have recently been proposed, such as aggregational processes of nanoparticle precursors or pre-nucleation clusters, which seem to contradict the classical theory.

Impact of a provider job aid intervention on injectable contraceptive continuation in South Africa.

Arriving late for scheduled contraceptive reinjections is common in many countries and contributes to discontinuation when providers are unsure how to manage such clients. A clinic-randomized cohort and cross-sectional study with more than 5,000 clients using injectable contraceptives was conducted in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa to test the effectiveness of a provider job aid for managing late-returning clients and promoting continued use of the method. A marginally significant difference in reinjection rates between intervention and control groups was found for those up to two weeks late, and reanalysis excluding one clinic that experienced stockout issues revealed a significant difference.

Effects of iron and n-3 fatty acid supplementation, alone and in combination, on cognition in school children: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention in South Africa.

Background: Little is known about the combined effects of iron and n-3 (omega-3) fatty acid (FA) supplementation on cognitive performance. The provision of either DHA/EPA or iron alone in rats with combined iron and n-3 FA deficiency has been reported to exacerbate cognitive deficits associated with deficiency.

Objective: We investigated the effects of iron and DHA/EPA supplementation, alone and in combination, in children with poor iron and n-3 FA status.

Overweight impairs efficacy of iron supplementation in iron-deficient South African children: a randomized controlled intervention.

Background: Many countries in the nutrition transition have high rates of iron deficiency (ID) and overweight (OW). ID is more common in OW children; this may be due to adiposity-related inflammation reducing iron absorption.

Objective: We investigated whether weight status predicts response to oral iron supplementation in ID South African children.

[Filtering surgery in glaucoma: comparative study of three surgical approaches].

Introduction: The multiple complications observed with trabeculectomy encouraged the re-emergence of non penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS) in the 1980's. Since then, several modifications have been developed in order to improve success rates and safety. We describe a new variation of deep sclerectomy (DS) in which we include an autologous corneal stromal implant soaked in mitomycin C and sutured to the scleral bed.

Increased risk of acute hepatitis B among adults with diagnosed diabetes mellitus.

Introduction: The risk of acute hepatitis B among adults with diabetes mellitus is unknown. We investigated the association between diagnosed diabetes and acute hepatitis B.

Methods: Confirmed acute hepatitis B cases were reported in 2009-2010 to eight Emerging Infections Program (EIP) sites; diagnosed diabetes status was determined.

Characterization of the organic hydroperoxide resistance system of Brucella abortus 2308.

The organic hydroperoxide resistance protein Ohr has been identified in numerous bacteria where it functions in the detoxification of organic hydroperoxides, and expression of ohr is often regulated by a MarR-type regulator called OhrR. The genes annotated as BAB2_0350 and BAB2_0351 in the Brucella abortus 2308 genome sequence are predicted to encode OhrR and Ohr orthologs, respectively. Using isogenic ohr and ohrR mutants and lacZ promoter fusions, it was determined that Ohr contributes to resistance to organic hydroperoxide, but not hydrogen peroxide, in B.

Social integration in global mental health: what is it and how can it be measured?

Purpose. Global mental health movements increasingly highlight social integration as a key outcome for mental health services. This creates a pressing need to better articulate and measure this outcome.

Synthesis of Oligosilanyl Compounds of Group 4 Metallocenes with the Oxidation State +3.

Recently, we showed that titanocene silyls are much more stable with Ti in the oxidation state +3. The current study demonstrates that analogous Zr and Hf compounds can also be obtained by reaction of a suitable metalate precursor with an oligosilanyl dianion. As the obtained complexes formally possess a d(1) electron configuration, they were investigated using EPR spectroscopy.

Coordination chemistry of cyclic disilylated stannylenes and plumbylenes to group 4 metallocenes.

Reduction of group 4 metallocene dichlorides with magnesium in the presence of cyclic disilylated stannylene or plumbylene phosphine adducts yielded the respective metallocene tetrylene phosphine complexes. Under the same conditions the use of the respective dimerized stannylene or plumbylene gave metallocene ditetrylene complexes. A computational analysis of these reactions revealed for all investigated compounds multiple-bonded character for the M-E(II) linkage, which can be rationalized in the case of the monotetrylene complex with the classical σ-donor/π-acceptor interaction.

SodA is a major metabolic antioxidant in Brucella abortus 2308 that plays a significant, but limited, role in the virulence of this strain in the mouse model.

The gene designated BAB1_0591 in the Brucella abortus 2308 genome sequence encodes the manganese-cofactored superoxide dismutase SodA. An isogenic sodA mutant derived from B. abortus 2308, designated JB12, displays a small colony phenotype, increased sensitivity in vitro to endogenous superoxide generators, hydrogen peroxide and exposure to acidic pH, and a lag in growth when cultured in rich and minimal media that can be rescued by the addition of all 20 amino acids to the growth medium.

Community integration of formerly homeless men and women with severe mental illness after hospital discharge.

Objective: This exploratory study examined the impact of critical time intervention (CTI), a time-limited care coordination model, on community integration among formerly homeless adults with severe mental illness after discharge from inpatient psychiatric treatment.

Methods: Data were from a randomized trial that enrolled 150 participants, 95 of whom completed 18-month outcome measures. Relationships between two components of community integration (social and physical) and demographic characteristics, symptom ratings, housing status, and treatment condition were examined.

Background: Penile pearly papules (PPP) are benign angiofibromas of the penis, frequently misdiagnosed as genital warts (condylomata acuminata). The lesions are often the reason for significant distress of the patient and his sexual partner, thus requiring occasional treatment, removing the lesions in a non-aggressive manner.

Methods: Forty-five patients with PPP were treated with 2940 nm Er:YAG laser (Skinlight, FOTONA, Slovenia) in ablation mode.

Dispersion energy enforced dimerization of a cyclic disilylated plumbylene.

By reaction of 1,4-dipotassio-1,1,4,4-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)tetramethyltetrasilane with PbBr(2) in the presence of triethylphosphine a base adduct of a cyclic disilylated plumbylene could be obtained. Phosphine abstraction with B(C(6)F(5))(3) led to formation of a base-free plumbylene dimer, which features an unexpected single donor-acceptor PbPb bond. The results of density functional computations at the M06-2X and B3LYP level of theory indicate that the dominating interactions which hold the plumbylene subunits together and which define its actual molecular structure are attracting van der Waals forces between the two large and polarizable plumbylene subunits.
