Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of comedication of clopidogrel and dabigatran etexilate in healthy male volunteers.

Purpose: To evaluate the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of concomitant administration of single loading doses of clopidogrel or multiple doses of clopidogrel with multiple doses of dabigatran etexilate.

Methods: This was an open-label trial in healthy male subjects. In part 1 (pilot, n = 8) and part 3 (n = 12), a single dose of clopidogrel (300 or 600 mg, respectively) was given concomitantly with dabigatran etexilate at steady state; part 2 was a randomized, multiple-dose, crossover study with the test treatment being clopidogrel at steady state [300 mg loading dose on day 1, then 75 mg once daily (qd)] with concomitant dabigatran.

Coming home revisited: family life and military deployment.

The war in Iraq and Afghanistan has involved the deployment of hundreds of thousands of American soldiers, many of whom are married and have children. The experience of one military family living through a deployment in Iraq in 2011 is discussed and interpreted in light of Parse's humanbecoming family model. The model provides a useful way for nurses, and others, to understand families, in a way that honors their values and struggles in an everchanging and unpredictable world.

Making a meaningful contribution to nursing theory.

The value of being a part of a network of theoretically like-minded individuals for a small group of nurse scholars, namely Richard Cowling, Howard Butcher and William Cody, is here discussed. The like-mindedness in this case is what has been described by some as an angular view of nursing or the simultaneity paradigm. An underlying theme is that joy-sorrow often arises in living the isolation and connectedness of a career in nursing that includes a commitment to scholarship.

Kinesin-3 and dynein mediate microtubule-dependent co-transport of mRNPs and endosomes.

Long-distance transport of mRNAs is important in determining polarity in eukaryotes. Molecular motors shuttle large ribonucleoprotein complexes (mRNPs) containing RNA-binding proteins and associated factors along microtubules. However, precise mechanisms including the interplay of molecular motors and a potential connection to membrane trafficking remain elusive.

Bistability in atomic-scale antiferromagnets.

Control of magnetism on the atomic scale is becoming essential as data storage devices are miniaturized. We show that antiferromagnetic nanostructures, composed of just a few Fe atoms on a surface, exhibit two magnetic states, the Néel states, that are stable for hours at low temperature. For the smallest structures, we observed transitions between Néel states due to quantum tunneling of magnetization.

Engineering genetically encoded nanosensors for real-time in vivo measurements of citrate concentrations.

Citrate is an intermediate in catabolic as well as biosynthetic pathways and is an important regulatory molecule in the control of glycolysis and lipid metabolism. Mass spectrometric and NMR based metabolomics allow measuring citrate concentrations, but only with limited spatial and temporal resolution. Methods are so far lacking to monitor citrate levels in real-time in-vivo.

Enzymes involved in the anaerobic degradation of meta-substituted halobenzoates.

Organohalides are environmentally relevant compounds that can be degraded by aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. The denitrifying Thauera chlorobenzoica is capable of degrading halobenzoates as sole carbon and energy source under anaerobic conditions. LC-MS/MS-based coenzyme A (CoA) thioester analysis revealed that 3-chloro- or 3-bromobenzoate were preferentially metabolized via non-halogenated CoA-ester intermediates of the benzoyl-CoA degradation pathway.

Modification of yttrium alkoxides: β-Ketoesterate-substituted yttrium alkoxo/hydroxo/oxo clusters.

Reaction of Y(5)O(OiPr)(13) ("yttrium iso-propoxide") with one molar equivalent of isopropyl acetoacetate (iprac) per Y resulted in the formation of Y(9)O(OH)(9)(OiPr)(8)(iprac)(8), a rare example of an yttrium alkoxo/hydroxo/oxo cluster. Reaction in a 1:3 molar ratio gave Y(4)(OH)(2)(iprac)(10) and Y(6)(OH)(6)(iprac)(12) instead. A fourth cluster, Y(9)O(OH)(9)(iprac)(16), structurally closely related to Y(9)O(OH)(9)(OiPr)(8)(iprac)(8), was obtained upon recrystallization of Y(4)(OH)(2)(iprac)(10) from CDCl(3).

Long-term exposure to music enhances the sensitivity of the auditory system in children.

This event-related brain potential study aims to contribute to the present debate regarding the effect of musical training on the maturation of the human auditory nervous system. To address this issue, we recorded the mismatch negativity (MMN) evoked by violin and pure sine-wave tones in a group of 7.5- to 12-year-old children who had either several years of musical experience with Suzuki violin lessons, or no musical training.

Exploring the limits of robust detection of incorporation of 13C by mass spectrometry in protein-based stable isotope probing (protein-SIP).

One of the features of protein-based stable isotope probing is the parallel identification of differentially labeled peptide forms and the accurate calculation of their relative isotope abundances. The level of incorporation is informative of the metabolic activity of the species that synthesized the said protein and peptide. To model the carbon flux in a microbial community, an accurate assessment is crucial.

The aromatic volatile organic compounds toluene, benzene and styrene induce COX-2 and prostaglandins in human lung epithelial cells via oxidative stress and p38 MAPK activation.

Toluene, benzene and styrene are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) widely distributed in the environment. Tobacco smoke, traffic exposure and solvents used for paints, rubber and adhesives are known sources for these compounds. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether toluene, benzene and styrene can induce inflammatory reactions in lung cells and to characterize possible underlying mechanisms.

Nursing practice with families without a country.

The authors of this paper consider the stories of three North Korean refugee families in South Korea in light of the humanbecoming family model. These stories testify to the hardships and separations lived by such families, but also speaks to their courage and determination. The vulnerability of refugee-and asylum-seeking persons to further exploitation and victimization is highlighted, as is the value for nurses who provide them with an understanding welcome and support.

Fungal development of the plant pathogen Ustilago maydis.

The maize pathogen Ustilago maydis has to undergo various morphological transitions for the completion of its sexual life cycle. For example, haploid cells respond to pheromone by forming conjugation tubes that fuse at their tips. The resulting dikaryon grows filamentously, expanding rapidly at the apex and inserting retraction septa at the basal pole.

Biomarkers of structural remodelling and endothelial dysfunction for prediction of cardiovascular events or death in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated not only with inflammation but also with structural remodelling and altered endothelial activation which may contribute to clot formation, embolization and mortality. We aimed to determine the predictive value of single-time biomarker analysis for prediction of outcome in patients with AF.

Methods And Results: We conducted a prospective study to evaluate if biomarkers of structural, electrical or endothelial remodelling are predictive of cardiovascular events (composite primary endpoint of myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral embolism or death).

Biphenomycin B and derivatives: total synthesis and translation inhibition.

A full account on the synthesis of the antibiotic natural product biphenomycin B and several derivatives is reported, which employs a Suzuki coupling reaction of a free carboxylic acid and macrolactam formation as key transformations. Liberal exchange of the central amino acid was demonstrated. This procedure gave derivatives to study the influence of the polar side chain of the central amino acids on translation inhibition.

Aging in Haiti: toward an international nursing response.

In this column Orem's self-care deficit model and Holzkamp's critical learning theory are used to discuss the story of an older adult Haitian woman with an interview with a Haitian nurse leader, Mme. Suze N'Lemba. Older adults in Haiti today are seen as a group at very high risk due in part to the conditions in the country, and they are in need of considerable guidance in nursing.

Orthogonal representation of sound dimensions in the primate midbrain.

Natural sounds are characterized by their spectral content and the modulation of energy over time. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in awake macaques, we observed topographical representations of these spectral and temporal dimensions in a single structure, the inferior colliculus, the principal auditory nucleus in the midbrain. These representations are organized as a map with two approximately perpendicular axes: one representing increasing temporal rate and the other increasing spectral frequency.

Music activities and responses of young cochlear implant recipients.

Objective: The development of auditory receptive skills and spoken language is often delayed in children who use cochlear implants, which may affect their appreciation of and responses to music. This in turn may be interpreted as disinterest in music. A questionnaire was developed to determine whether differences in exposure and responses to music exist between young cochlear implant recipients and their normally hearing peers.
